HORSIN’ AROUND APRIL 2016

By Al SeleskyMCMM PresidentPresident’s Corner

Dear Members and Friends, By the time you read this, Jan and I will have driven Route 66 one way and should just about be headed back to Michigan. We left

Michigan on Wednesday, March 23rd and will return sometime between April 18th and April

25th…all depending on how many highlights we encounter (like the world’s largest ball of string). We are sorry we will miss the Speed show at the Midland Center for the Arts on the 9th, and the National Mustang Day Anniversary Rally on the 17th, but I know the club will be well represented as the event will be a great opportunity to broadcast our profile, our good works, and our love of Mustangs. The most critical timeline we are facing is the preparation for our Great Lakes Stampede on June 19th. I expect Lori and Jan will have some tasks

outlined for each of us “volunteers” to accept. We have a great opportunity to up our game – even from last year’s standard. Also, please keep focus on signing

up new members as that is the lifeblood of the club and do all you can to meet/promote our club to area Ford dealers and other potential sponsors. I am

always impressed by the willingness of our club members to pitch in and help…whenever… wherever asked. This example of strong support is admired by other clubs. We have a great thing going and need to keep on task to continue our solid track record. The best to all, and travel safe,

Our Member Spotlight is a bit longer then usual, but it is actually two member spotlights in one, with Mustang upgrading stories for both Bob Dillenbeck and Rick Montagne. Let me know if the information included, such as brands and suppliers is of value to you. Give ‘em a Brake! I mentioned a couple of months ago about my steed’s need for a brake upgrade. I found a few days in March that were warm enough to work out in the garage. So, except for one more bleed down, they’re done. The rear calipers needed a couple of new parts beyond the rotors and pads, but all is reassembled and tested for the show in Midland this coming Saturday (see note at right and full details on page 6 ). Next comes the replacement of the dreaded, two-piece spark plugs. Brakes are quite straight forward for me; but these unique spark plugs may give me a real headache. But, I’ve been reading up on several procedures that may make it easier, but hope

to enlist the help of son, Colin, with his “plug removal tool,” since he’s done it before. We’ll see!

Coming up this month:• April 9, the Speed event and car show at the Midland Center for the Arts. Please contact Rick Montagne to register in advance. His email and phone are on page two. Weather looks like it will be cool, but dry and partly sunny.. Noon to 4.• April 17, National Mustang Day Cruise - Caro to Lexington leaving the Big Boy at 10:30. Here again, contact Rick to register in advance. He needs to know how many reservations are needed at the restaurant for lunch. Please call ham as once to register. • April 18, MCMM Membership Meeting is Monday, the 18th, at Fritz’s Restaurant, Richville, M-15 at M-46. Come early and have dinner! The meeting is at 7:00.• April 30, Freeland Walleye Festival Car Show. See the events page for details. 9 am to 2:30 pm. Tom

*American Gasser, and 10.5” Nitto drag radial rear tires for better traction. This brought total horsepower to 400 RWHP at 435 ft. lbs. of torque. Flywheel horsepower is 471, for comparison.(ed: see “Comparison Notes” on page four for ratings on stock GT V-8s) My car, a silver, 2009 Mustang GT has seen some changes through the years as well. The GT was purchased new from *Hagen Ford, in Bay City. My first mods were 2’’ lowering springs, bump stops, and camber bolts from Ford Racing, and an Eibach Adjustable Panhard Rod. Later that year I had a Ford Racing 3.73 rear gear installed. The following year, changes included a wheel and tire package from American Muscle, and long tube headers plus a 3,200 high stall torque convertor, installed by *American Gasser, here in Saginaw.. Last year I added Hot Rod cams, intake manifold, and 63mm throttle body, all from Ford Racing with the installation work done by Alternative Auto Performance in Chesterfield, MI (northeast of Detroit). I had the car dyno tuned while at Alternative after the latest mods were added. With the changes made, the GT is now rated at 364 RWHP and 309 lbs/ft. of torque. Needless to say, we are known as the Mustang guy’s of our

Saginaw neighborhood. Near us, there are many Vettes, Hot Rods, and Harley Davidson motorcycles all sitting in our neighbors garages. It’s a good subdivision to live in

if you’re car person. Editor’s note: Bob, and his wife, Gina, joined the MCMM in September, 2004, They have taken

an active part in the club since joining at our All Ford & Mustang Car Show. they enjoy club events, including traveling to other shows and taking club cruises. They help with our shows in the drawing

Comparison Notes: A stock, 1999-2004 Mustang GT with 4.6 ltr. V-8 and two-valve heads, is factory rated at 260 HP and 312 lbs/ft torque. The estimated RWHP of a stock, 1999-2004, 4.6 ltr. V-8 is 219.1 and 265.6 lbs/ft. torque. The 2005-2010 Mustang GT, also with a 4.6 ltr. V-8, but with three-valve heads and other minor changes, is factory rated at 300 HP, and 320 lbs/ft. torque. The estimated RWHP of a stock, 2005-2010, 4.6 ltr. V-8 is 269 and 292 lbs/ft. torque. Factory HP/Torque ratings are as listed in the Mustang GT brochure. The actual, stock RWHP/Torque is estimated, based on research on line. Actual ratings can vary

depending on many factors.

tent and 50/50’s, and car judging. Gina also is our member support chair, a position that sends cards to members for anniversaries, birthdays, and illnesses. Rick, and his wife, Nancy, are equally active in the club, mainly with special events. Rick is the Social Activities chairman, which coordinates with other car shows, cruises, and other special events. Rick compiles the Car Show Schedule we all receive. Both Rick and Nancy have been handling and coordinating the Christmas Party for the last several years. Nancy works with Gina in the drawing tent at our main show, and with other club activities. The couple joined the MCMM in August, 2012.

Above: Bob’s Vortex Centrifugal supercharger that boosted Rear Wheel Horsepower (RWHP ) to 358, is at lower left; the tube in front and rear feed his recently added Vortex intercooler, hidden behind his front grill/bumper.

Left, Rick’s clean engine, compartment, with Ford Racing intake and 63 mm throttle body feeds his Ford Racing Hot Rod Cams. All this leads to a rated 364 RWHP and 309 lbs/ft. of torque. Compare this to Bob’s 400 horse supercharged steed.

Bob’s Mustang earned him the nickname: “Burnout Bob”As to Montagne, we’re thinking, “Racer Rick”

April Membership Report - ‘16 DuesThree new members in February, 2016: Nathan Levitte of Caro, MI Jean Stuart of Saginaw, MI Adam & Staci Pletcher of Lennon, MIOne new member in March, 2016: Tony & Tammye Jantamrian of Armada, MIIn March Tom Welsh sent a renewal letter to all the members that had not paid their dues for 2016 via e-mails and letters. Jeffrey and Karen Sulzman, Lon and Sandy Hetchler, Robert Hadden, Rick and Carol Nash, and Vic and Jean Trisch have all renewed.

To date the only other response that has been forwarded to me regarding the dues is from Lee Smith who has requested to be dropped from the Roster since selling his Mustang. (He will be removed from the roster at the end of April when the others that have not paid will be removed.) As of April 1, 2016 we have 76 members and 3 Phantom members for a total of 79 members. Unless there is a big change in membership dues received in April the report for May 1, 2016 will show a considerable drop in our membership roster.

Birthday & Anniversary Support It was mentioned at a recent meeting about publishing members birthdates in the newsletter, a practice that took place until a few years ago. I think it should be discussed. Some may like it and some may not, due to privacy, etc. An alternative option could be to offer a  copy of my list to any member who might like to send a card to fellow members. We will continue the discussion at our next meeting in April.

This is the time of year where I begin to think about the Presidents Award and I thought I would share with you folks some of the criteria that regional clubs are judged on to receive that award. You must also show documentation on each of the items.

So now that you see the criteria don't hesitate to remind me when you see things our club is doing that may generate points towards this award.  Our club has earned this award continuously for about ten years help keep our streak alive. I recently got an email from Steve Caesar suggesting those planning on attending the 40th Anniversary of the MCA travel together  in a herd.  I think that's a great idea and we will be working on that!   So if you haven't signed up for this event please give it some thought.  At the moment I know the following MCMM members are planning on attending: Stan and Ruth Bentley, Jeff and Lori Amo, Steve and Angie Caesar, Al and Jan Selesky along with Pat and I. If you have questions about this or any other show, give me a call or send an email.

News to ShareAngie Caesar,

MCMM Treasurer I did want to pass along some information from Cruis'news if anyone is interested. They have back issues of their magazine that we can have for free to hand out to members, or give away at our car show. If anyone is going to be in the Sterling Heights area, give them a call at 586-826-8989 to make sure they still have some left. Also, a new site to go to for Mustang Memories / Mustang II Reunion. It has lots of good information about what is going on.      http://www.toocoolevents.com/

Facebook Page Manger The Mustang Club of Mid-Michigan Facebook page is doing well.   Some statistics;     People Reached is up 31% We have over 3,821 people actively watching our page.     Post Engagements (Comments and likes) is up 75%     Actions on Page as a whole (clicks on stories, likes or comments) is up 67% Content is derived from monthly news letter, Mustang post, and shares from other Mustang pages or club members  I’ve worked with Angie Caesar to get photo's posted from our car show and we’re getting a really nice photo book going.  I am trying to link to more club pages for more news stories and notifications.  Mustang news seems to do the best with our readers versus just notifications.  But that can be people just take the information and do not feel the need to comment.  I am also using Google + to share information with Mustang enthusiasts all over the world inside their Mustang groups, which is something we may look at expanding to.  Judi Beeler (989) 992-8608 [email protected]

The 2016 Great Lakes Stampede is quickly approaching, and in order for our show to be successful this year, we need everyone’s help! To date, the tent has been ordered, as have the Porta-Potties. We have our car show insurance completed through the Mustang Club of America, so we are set with that. A DJ has been contacted, but not yet secured. Our awards have been ordered, vendors, car clubs and previous attendees of our shows have all been emailed the car registration form and map to our Nexteer location. Now, we need volunteers to work the show! If you want to do the same job you did last year, please let me know as soon as possible, or if you would like a change, let me know where you want to work. First to speak up gets what they want! Categories include:

• Set up Sunday morning (EVERYONE!!!) (a car show in Grand Rapids is the day before, and I know many of us want to attend. Last year there really wasn’t much to set up on Saturday, other than making sure the fencing/gate was opened between where car haulers could park, then enter the show)

• Sign placers Sunday morning, and to pick them up after the show• Gate Greeters• Car Classification• Car judges• Car parking directors (after judging is done)• Registration• 50/50• Raffle table• Score sheet runners• Score tabulators• Clean up (EVERYONE!)

I will have the sign up sheets at our April meeting. If I don’t hear from you, you will hear from me!! We also will need 1-2 golf carts for our runners. If you know of one, and can bring it to the show, that would be super! If you are able to secure a really cool item for our raffle table, please let Gina Dillenbeck know what you have, so she can add it to the list. A nice, high-priced item will sure to bring in the big bucks, as does a Vera Bradley item, jewelry, car cleaning buckets, kids items, Mustang memorabilia, and maybe what YOU want to win! A big thank you to those who have lined up a sponsor this year. Just to let you know, we don’t have very many as of yet (Rick Ford is a new sponsor this year), and if we want to make a solid donation for our charity, The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, WE NEED SPONSORS! Desperately!! Our show is only a couple of months away! Please, don’t be shy! Contact someone you think would like to help our show! We need to have the sponsorship that we had last year to come out in the black after a great donation to the F&WSF. Last year we were able to donate just over $1,090 the this great charity.

HORSIN’ AROUND APRIL 2016MCMM By-Laws AmendmentProposed Amendment to the MCMM Constitution

& By-Laws for Recognition of Members, and Awarding of Honorary Memberships

The issue: To protect the financial health of the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan, we must ensure a steady steam of revenue. Some clubs have been too generous with “Lifetime Membership Awards” and now find themselves in a situation where more members have free “Lifetime Memberships” than members paying dues. On the other hand, we do want to have a method of rewarding those members who have given years of service and supported the club with their presence at meetings, fund raisers, car shows, car rallies, and promotional events. As well as a way of rewarding those non-members who have contributed to the well-being of the MCMM, Ford Motor Company (Ford), and the Mustang.

The Possible Solution: A) Provide a path where non-members may be recognized with an Honorary Membership. This may include Ford personnel, sponsors, speakers, or members of other car clubs that have provided outstanding service to our club over a length of time. The

cost of this membership would be zero, as the only benefit would be a emailed newsletter once a month. The Honorary Member would have no voting rights, nor could the individual hold an office within the club.B) Member Recognition - Create an “Outstanding Service Award” in the form of a plaque, trophy, or other physical item, that would recognize superior service to the club over a length of time and has supported the MCMM through regular meeting attendance, helping with our Great Lakes Stampede Car Show, participation in sponsored events, and outreach programs.

Procedure: For either the Member Recognition Award or the non-member, Honorary Membership, a written request will need to be presented to any one of the Board of Directors, with the type of award, and reason(s) why. The Board will then make its recommendation to the general membership for final approval, by vote. If approved by at least 2/3 of the paid members present, plus any proxies [one vote per family unless family has two memberships] this amendment will be added to our Constitution.

Wording for the Proposed Amendment to the MCMM Constitution & By-Laws

To protect the financial health of the Mustang Club of Mid Michigan, it is proposed:

Honorary Member: The Club may vote on any non-member of the Club to be an Honorary Member of the organization. Honorary Members will ve voted on by the Board of Directors based upon written nominations from the Board of Directors or the General Membership. The written nominations should be submitted to one of the officers on the Board of Directors. A framed certificate will be at the end-of-year meeting or event (Christmas Event). Although the rules for the Honorary Member may vary, the criteria should include one of the following:1. Significant contributions to the MCMM.

2. Significant contribution to the preservation of the Ford Motor Company, and/or the Mustang brand.

Member Recognition Award: The Club may award a Recognition of Service plaque/trophy to any member in good standing of the MCMM. The Board of Directors will make a recommendation to the General Membership for a final vote, after a written nomination is presented to the Board. Rules may vary for this award, but the criteria should include some of the following: 1. Significant contributions to the MCMM.2. Significant contribution to the preservation of Ford

Mustangs.3. Recipient of the award will be a member in good

standing of the MCMM.

The amendment has been proposed by the Board to the membership at the March 21, 2016 General Membership Meeting for consideration. It will require a two-thirds vote of the membership present at the April 18th General Meeting, and by any written proxy votes presented by those not present. If you will be present at the April 18th meeting, you may vote the amendment at this meeting. If you are unable to be present at the April

18th meeting, and wish to vote on the amendment, you may do so by proxy by sending this form to the MCMM, PO Box 324, Frankenmuth, MI, 48734, to arrive before the meeting begins at 7:00 pm; Or, you may email your vote to: [email protected] by Sunday, April 17th, at 5:00 PM, Or, you may give this form to a member that is attending the meeting.
