MustafaAknc(born28December1947)isthepresidentelectofNorthernCyprus.Hewaselectedtothispositioninthe2015presidentialelection.Attheageof28,hebecamethemayorofNicosiaTurkishMunicipality,andhasalsoservedasamemberoftheAssemblyoftheRepublic,DeputyPrimeMinisterandMinisterofTourism.[1]

In1975,hewaselectedtotheConstituentAssemblyofTurkishCypriots.[2]Followingthiselection,hewasthefirstelectedMayoroftheNicosiaTurkishMunicipality,andservedforanuninterruptedtermof14yearsfrom1976to1990.Between1993and2009,heservedasanelectedmemberofparliamentinNorthernCyprus.[3]

Duringthe14yearsofMayorship,hecollaboratedwiththethenNicosiaGreekCypriotMayorontheimplementationoftheNicosiaSewerageProjectandtheNicosiaMasterPlan.Inthiscontext,NicosiaMasterPlanreceivedtheWorldHabitatAwardin1989andtheAgaKhanAwardforArchitecturein2007.Additionally,in2003AkncandhisGreekCypriotcounterpartwereawardedtheprestigiousEuropaNostraMedalofHonourinrecognitionoftheirconsistentandsuccessfuleffortsforNicosiaanditscitizensduringparticularlydifficulttimes,andforthepreservationofthehistoricalandarchitecturalenvironmentoftheWalledCity.[2]

AkncalsoplayedavitalroleintheestablishmentoftheUnionofTurkishCypriotMunicipalities,whichhethenbecamethefirstpresident.[2]

2015TRNCpresidentialcampaign

On13March2015,MustafaAkncsuccessfullycompletedhisapplicationtorunforpresidency.[4]

Duringhiscampaign,heputhisvoiceforwardregardingtheghosttownVarosha,whichisaverylivelytopicregardingtheCyprusproblem.ItwaspossibletoseethatAkncfavouredasettlingapproachtosolvethisproblem.RegardingVarosha,Akncstatedthat,"InsteadoflivingsidebysideacorpseletVaroshabecomealivelycitywherepeoplelive,contractorsfrombothcommunitiesdobusinesstogetherandyoungpeoplecanfindjobs".[5]

On19April2015,thepresidentialelectionstookplaceinnorthernCyprusandMustafaAkncgained26.9%ofthevoteswhichputhimsecondbehindDerviEroluwhogot28.2%ofthevotes.Basedontheseresults,AkncgotthechancetocompetewithDerviEroluinthesecondroundofthepresidentialelectionswhichtookplaceon26April2015.[6]Hewontheelectionslastround.[7][8]

TheRepublicofCyprusregardshisvictoryaspositiveashehasexpressedtheinterestofholdingdiscussionsregardingthereunificationofCyprus[7][9]andthereopeningofVaroshainFamagustafortourists.[9]

Publications

In2010,Akncpublishedhisfirstbooknamed"BelediyeBakanl'nda14yl".Thisbook,atthelengthof479pages,aimedtosummarisehisexperiencesduringhisyearsasaMayoroftheNicosiaTurkishMunicipality.[10]
