Scratch, Scratch, Scratch, Did you hear that? I think that was the sound of a muskrat. Do you know why they are called muskrats? They are called that because they spray musk kind of like a skunk.

Lifespan, Diet, And HabitatLifespanA muskrat lives about five years. A baby muskrat nearly a day old could survive on its own. The average lifespan of a muskrat is five years. The average muskrat has about 5-10 babies per litter. That is how long a muskrat lives.DietA muskrat eats cattails, algae, and will even catch frogs. They also catch fish, dig up mussels, And clams. Their diet still isnt complete without smartweed, white water lilies, and spatterdock. Those are all the delicious foods my animal eats.HabitatThe muskrat will build its own home a private dining to be exact. It also lives on a marsh and you will also find it at a slow moving stream or river. Lastly a muskrat lives in Alaska, and in north America. Those are the habitats that my animal lives.

Predators, offspring, and other facts predatorsThe muskrat gets hunted by red fox, people, and hippos. The muskrat will even die if it is low on food. If it gets a disease/ parasite it will die. Lastly, eagles and hawks will hunt it too. Those are all the things that hunt my animal. OffspringA newly born muskrat is ready to go off on its own within a week. A month after mating is when the muskrat gives birth. The muskrat gives birth to 5-10 babies per liter. That is how many babies the muskrat has.Other factsA person could hold two newborns in one hand. Also a muskrat has a water proof fur coat. The muskrats number one defense is spraying musk.
