THE FLORIDA ORCHESTRA BELONGS TO TAMPA BAY

Every day, nearly 150 people move to Tampa Bay. Our home is a thriving, vibrant community and arts destination, shaped as much by our culture and institutions as our award-winning beaches. Deeply rooted in this community for 52 years,

The Florida Orchestra is proud to help drive that growth as the largest professional orchestra in the state and the only performing arts organization that bridges the entire bay area.

This report tells the story of how The Florida Orchestra is helping to build our community. At the core of all we do is outstanding musical artistry under the leadership of Music Director Michael Francis. We use extraordinary music to teach

life skills to schoolchildren, to comfort hospital patients, and to perform free concerts in parks, museums, malls, and more. When so much in the world can divide us, extraordinary music has the power to bring us together and have a positive

impact on every person in Tampa Bay.

This is also the story of an orchestra on the rise, poised for the strongest, boldest era in our history. The artistic excellence of our maestro and musicians, generosity of our donors and patrons, strategic leadership of our boards, and tireless work

of our staff have brought us this far. Through the steadfast support of our community and our shared passion for the power of music, we are building something remarkable that will last for generations to come. Thank you.

Music is not a luxury or a whim.

Music helps us make sense of our world, our community, our own lives like nothing else can.

-Mark Cantrell, TFO President & CEO

It goes straight to the heart of being human.“

Led by internationally acclaimed Music Director Michael Francis, TFO is recognized as the premier and largest professional orchestra in the state

and one of the most innovative orchestras in the nation.

INNOVATIONINNOVATIONTransfigured Night

Unlike any other orchestra in the nation, TFO told the story of Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night through a groundbreaking fusion of live music and a world-premiere art video that was produced

and supported locally. It was the first collaboration between Maestro Francis and our first-everVisual Artist-in-Residence Geff Strik, but promises to be the first of many.

COLLABORATIONCOLLABORATION

A Child of Our Time TFO partnered with the Florida Holocaust Museum and The Master Choraleof Tampa Bay to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht, featuring ararely performed work by Michael Tippett. This was one of several partnershipswith local institutions and arts organizations throughout the season.

For the fourth year in a row, TFO featured new music by Florida composers, including a statewide Student Composer Competition.

If you believe in the power of music toaffect people’s lives in a positive way,if you believe in the power of music to heal,to help people understand themselves andto empathize with others, then you have to

take it to everybody. Not everyone is able to come to the concert hall.

-Music Director Michael Francis

Prodigy Cultural Arts Partnership | Free violin lessons for kids

Goal: Use violin to teach life skills to underserved kidsIn just one year, program has grown from 1 site to 5 in Hillsborough

County, reaching 100 kids. Most have never picked up a violin before.

Teaching Artists | Partnership With Pinellas County SchoolsGoal: Teach strings to teachers and students in support of music education

Two professional musicians split their time between the TFO stage and the classroom. Worked with 27 Pinellas classrooms last school year.

Through the program, someone can tell them it’s okay, can help them work through their struggles,

so they can come out an even stronger person on the other side.-Bonnie Dinicola, parent of Prodigy violin student
