Music at Oxford has had a wonderful start to its 2014-15concert season with several superlative performances. At the time of writing, three of our first seven concerts havebeen complete sell-outs, and two more are well on the way. It’sa delight to start our season with such a sense of energy andexcitement and we’re confident we can extend this into 2015.

The programme is put together in line with our long-held aims of bringingprofessional performers of international stature to Oxford, and of workingin co-operation with some of the finest of the city’s own musicalorganisations. It’s always our intention, of course, to make artists andaudiences welcome and to give pleasure.

In the months ahead, we feature remarkable musicians including IestynDavies, the Brodsky Quartet, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra withAndris Nelsons, Joanna MacGregor and Natalie Clein. They bring us theirinspired and informed interpretations of repertoire which ranges from themuch-loved to the less familiar; Zemlinsky (a particular enthusiasm ofmine), Piazzolla and Jonathan Dove all feature in the months to come. We are also excited to announce a new addition to the season: a visit fromthe USA by Yale Schola Cantorum and Julliard415.

For me, nothing beats live performance; I increasingly value being in thesame space as the performer, absorbing and experiencing interpretation asit unfolds. The relative intimacy of so many Oxford venues - the SheldonianTheatre, Holywell Music Room and various college chapels - as opposed tothe conventional concert hall, gives us a privileged chance to do so.

Live music really can thrill; please join us to experience it in 2015.

English Renaissance composerJohn Dowland was one of thefinest lutenists of his time, whosebeguiling compositions for thelute have endured throughout thecenturies. Though perhaps less-known today, Silvius LeopoldWeiss wrote prolifically for theinstrument in the 18th Century, and one of his lute suites waseven transcribed for violin andharpsichord by J S Bach.

Tonight, the Brodsky Quartet turn their attentions to Vienna, for centuries a melting pot of classical composers, atrendsetter for European musical directions, and often at theforefront of developments in musical styles.

All three of tonight's composers were revolutionary in theirtime; Schubert pushing classical form and expressivenesstowards the romantic style, Zemlinsky breaking out of theconstrictions of the late romantic period, and Webern tryingat every turn to out-do Schoenberg in cleanliness of line andtexture.

The spartan language of Webern’s Six Bagatelles is anideal complement for Schubert's rich and sonorous stringwriting in his 'Death and the Maiden' quartet (named afterhis song of the same title) and Zemlinsky's lush textures.
