I am delighted to welcome you to RSAMD’s Musical Theatre

Showcase 2008

Today you will see the work of this year’s postgraduate group

from the Masters in Musical Theatre programme. Throughout their

training they have worked in a range of production projects for the

stage and other media. They already have a real connection to the

professional performance industries; as a consequence, they are

eager to enter them fully.

Your attendance here today is a vital final part of their training,

as you provide them with interaction with an audience of their

professional peers and potential employers. Thank you for coming

and for your support. We are enormously proud of all our students

and wish them great good fortune in their careers.

We hope that you will continue to engage with us and please

do get in touch if we can be of any assistance to you.

This has been an incredibly busy year for this international group

of students. Highlights have included performing for Prince Charles

at Clarence House, each student developing and performing their

own cabaret, and forming a repertory company to present four

premieres at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, gaining rave reviews and

award nominations.

It’s an exciting time for Musical Theatre both at the RSAMD,

in Scotland and internationally. Respect and support of the genre

is growing and we are now celebrating it in this country with a

commitment similar to our colleagues across the Atlantic.

As these 21 students take the next step in their careers, they

are entering the industry at a crucial time with more new work

being developed. This is supported by the establishment of an

infrastructure for this to grow through organisations like Musical

Theatre Matters and Perfect Pitch.

This coming year we are adding a Musical Directing pathway

to our now well-established performance Masters degree, and in

September 2009 we will launch our BA Musical Theatre - we’ll be

sure to keep you in touch with these developments.

But for now, I’d like to welcome you here today and thank you

for playing an important part in the next career chapter of these

performers.
