• Like art, music can reflect identity.
• There are many genres of music we can investigate.
• Genre: a category or type of art/music/film/etc.
MUSICAL GENRES
• To start interpreting Canadian identity in music, consider these
questions:
• Does the genre reflect Canadian identity?
• Are all Canadians represented by this music?
• Are stereotypes about Canadian identity reflected in this music?
DISCUSS
• Which seems most like a stereotypical Canadian band? Why?
THE CRTC
• The Canadian Radio-Television Commission (CRTC):
1. Promotes Canadian culture.
2. Ensures that Canadians can see media that is “from
a Canadian point of view”.
• Radio and TV stations have to show a certain amount
of Canadian programming or performances.
• This is intended to help Canadian artists.
