Feb – Jun 15Highlights

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the second half of our current season of music and performing arts events at the University of Salford. As always, it promises to be a vibrant and diverse set of offerings across music, dance, performance and comedy. There are always three core considerations at the heart of our events concerts and events programming which come together to play a vital role in the enrichment of our students’ experience. These three themes are: innovation; reflections upon the traditional, and community connectedness. I would like now to draw your attention to some of our upcoming events, while bearing these three themes in mind.

One of the early highlights of this half of our season is the Salford Sonic Fusion Festival in the latter part of February. The geographic reach of the festival is extensive, featuring music

and artists from Australia, USA, Korea, Mexico, Germany, France, Hungary and many other countries. The musical content of the festival will be diverse including electroacoustic, noise, sound-art, contemporary classical, jazz, IDM and indie genres always celebrating the new in music.

The symposium theme for the festival is ‘Zoomusicology, bioacoustics and the human muse.’ The symposium, which is open to interested members of the public, will feature many notable international speakers. In short this will look at the magical world of sounds and music from the animal and insect worlds and how these have influenced or inspired human music, whether through the imitation of bird-song in some piano works or the behaviours of insect swarms to influence the programming of electronic sound-art.

Early in March we have another Sonic Fusion Project with the extraordinary Electro-Acoustic Clarinet Duo from Canada presenting their work.

Upcoming events that allow us some reflections upon the traditional include The Adelphi Brass Band, Salford University Symphonic Wind and Salford University Big Band concerts; the Kirklees Composition Competition; and the National Association of Brass Band Conductors Annual Conference.

Many of our events celebrate community connectedness, however in the months ahead perhaps none more spectacularly than our Festival of International Music and Dance, which has 4 action-packed days of dance workshops and events. Our on-going collaborative concerts with the Greater Manchester

Music Hub and our fabulous Salford Saturday Music School also link us firmly with our local communities.

In many ways the contribution made by students from the Directorate of Music and Performance for the Salford Create Festival in June 2015 brings all of these 3 themes together while at the same time showcasing our graduating students’ work.

I do hope that you will be able to join us on many occasions in the months ahead.

Best wishes Professor Stephen Davismoon Director of Music and Performance

Feb – Jun 15

Feb – Jun 15This exciting contemporary music festival, which crosses all genres in the exploration of

innovation, will present 4 days of a wide variety of sonic experiences: from sound immersive installations, and sound-art; to audio-visual and interactive live works with live performers; and will include many UK and World premieres. These many new works will be allowed to resonate alongside rather older, more historic experimental musics, causing an interesting counterpoint and context for musical innovation.

Typical of the Salford Sonic Fusion Festival, the geographic reach of the work and artists it features is world-wide, from Australia to USA, from Korea to Mexico, from Canada to France, Italy, Greece, Germany and so on.

The symposium theme for the festival is ‘Zoomusicology, bioacoustics and the human muse.’ The symposium, which is open to interested members of the public, will feature many notable international speakers. In short, this will look at the magical world of sounds and music from the animal and insect worlds and how these have influenced or inspired human music. Whether through the imitation of bird-song in some piano works or the behaviours of insect swarms to influence the programming of electronic sound-art.

When:

Where:Various venues across campus

The first two days of the festival are based at our MCUK campus and will feature a Metanast curated concert of electroacoustic and sound art; Patchwork Rattlebag (a Salford-based indie-electronic band); the wonderfully talented pianist Xenia Pestova; the extraordinary percussive imagination of Evaristo Aguilar; as well as an evening of innovative digital performance, including a live streamed trans-Atlantic performance between electronic musicians from the University of Salford and Columbia College Chicago, the mesmerizing interactive table performance by Insook Choi, and the dazzling virtuosity of Collect/Project from Chicago, founded by the flautist Shanna Gutierrez.

The final two days of the festival are located in venues in the more historic area of Salford along the Crescent, and will feature performances from the John Bailey Quintet, the violinist Darragh Morgan, continuing with world premiere performances from composers Marc Yeats and Christine McCombe featuring the Manchester Camerata.

The festival will close in the University’s Peel Hall, with the bill being shared by the University of Salford’s Brass Band, the Adelphi Contemporary Music Group, the Oldham Contemporary Music Group, International Nothing, plus DJ sets William Baldry, Freya Mitchell and Steve Hellier. The climax of the evening will be a set from Zufallig (the latest indie/dance venture from ex-Death in Vegas founding member, Steve Hellier.)

When: When:

Where: Where:

This double bill of contemporary performance at The Lowry Theatre takes on an equine theme as our Contemporary Performance students join Belgian actress and theatre maker Leentje Van de Cruys.

❚ WHOAAAAA Steady is inspired by anthropologist Kate Fox’s book ‘The Racing Tribe’, we will be watching the horse-watchers, and start to make a show... A show about horses, humans and... well, being British (and weird). Giddy-up! *Contains nudity.

Conducted by final year elective students The Salford University Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Adelphi Brass Band combine to discover various aspects of their repertoire, and our final year student conductors continue to develop their skills with the university ensembles. For over ten years, the University of Salford’s student composers have had the unique opportunity to have their music played and published through this prestigious competition.

As a result of this event, the Kirklees Publishers even have a section of their catalogue known as the ‘Salford Collection’. A number of previous prize winners have gone on to compose significantly for the brass repertoire. This is an exceptional opportunity to witness this year’s high standard of competition entries as they prove just why the University has such a gleaming reputation within the UK’s brass band community.

Students on the Ensemble Musicianship and Performance pathway have the chance to form their own smaller ensembles in order to experience ‘chamber’ work and its specialist orientation. The ensembles are very much student led but also benefit from the mentoring and guidance of both Dr Brett Baker and Peter Christian, two of our long established tutors. We are also pleased to say that this is the second year that the Geneva Instruments Ensemble Award will be presented as part of this concert. This enthralling concert allows the students to demonstrate their skills in this specialist field, while also contributing towards their final award.

Electronic Music Production Round Table International Music and Dance Masterclass

Electro-Acoustic Clarinet TourMusic City to Media City

Gary CurtinMark Landon

With an ever changing industry model, how might you break away from ‘bedroom production’, in to the wider world?

Electronic music producers including Werkha (Tru Thoughts) reflect on their route to success, from building a fan base and securing a ‘deal’, through to physical and online distribution and live performance. It promises to be an insightful and invaluable session for any budding producers and bedroom DJs looking to forge a career in electronic music.

This workshop is dedicated to the Brazilian martial art of Capoeira and is open to all Music and Performance students. This exciting and informative session is led by Mestre Valdir da Silva (Capoeira Conviver, Manchester/Santos, Brazil) and Mestre Maria Pandeira (Capoeira Senzala, Bremen). During this workshop, you will have the opportunity to participate by trying various instruments and dance techniques. (Note: students interested in the dance aspect are encouraged to bring dance clothes or sports clothes to take part.)

Masterclass / workshop demonstrating techniques and challenges in performing pieces written and recorded for everglade records by Elizabeth Hoffman of New York University, Kui Dong of Dartmouth College, Maurice Wright of Temple University, and Benjamin Broening of The University of Richmond, and Director of the Third Practice Festival.

A streamed online masterclass between Nashville and MediaCityUK, featuring international figures from both sides of the Atlantic, in the fields of song writing publishing and production.

Venue change for this masterclass: Digital Performance Lab, MediaCityUK, M50 2HE

Gary was the first euphonium player to study at degree level and later for a Masters at the Cork School of Music.

After moving to the UK, Gary joined the Wingates Band on solo euphonium, moving later to the Fairey (Geneva) Band before finally accepting the Principal Euphonium seat in the Black Dyke Band. This is a unique opportunity to learn from someone who has won, amongst other awards, the Geoff Whitham Memorial Award for ‘Best Euphonium’.

For nearly a decade and half, Mark has been the principle percussionist of the Foden’s Band and is the percussion tutor of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. Currently a peripatetic music teacher in the Manchester area and he also teaches at the University of Salford.

Join us to experience virtuoso bass and drum siblings Mike and Mark Mondesir for some fast and furious modern music.

Widely regarded as one of the most talented drummers the UK has ever produced, Mark is largely self-taught though his career flourished from the age of 20 as his musicianship gained recognition and support from Dennis Chambers and the late Tony Williams. Mark has since played and recorded with Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, McCoy Tyner, John Scofield, Van Morrison, Joe Zawinul, Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Art Farmer, Ravi Coltrane and Gary Thomas among others.

Over a 30 year period Michael has established himself as one of the most respected and successful bass players in the UK. Having started out as a self-taught musician from London’s east-end he has since played with a diverse range of artists including Billy Cobham, Whitney Houston, Jack DeJohnette, Usher, Sir George Martin and Ronnie Wood. Michael also has a strong background in education and is on the teaching staff of the Royal Academy of Music, the Rhythmic Conservatory of Copenhagen and the British Academy of New Music.

Mondesir Bros. Advanced Acoustic Ensemble Recording Techniques

Lucy Pankhurst

For this intriguing and interactive exploration of recording techniques, members of staff will work with an acoustic ensemble in a recording session in Peel Hall to investigate different approaches to capturing the performance. Recordings will be made in the session using multiple microphone techniques and the comparative results will be played back in the hall for the audience’s consideration.

Award winning composer Lucy Pankhurst is, according to 4BarRest “something of a compositional chameleon, traversing pop, funk and jazz in her lighter output, whilst retaining a sophisticated, complex creative nature in her searching, harder edged works”. She was presented with a British Composer Award in 2011, and was also shortlisted again in 2013. Other compositional accolades include the 2011 John Golland award (RNCM) and the 2006 Inaugural RNCM Festival of Brass Young Composers Competition. Any students with an interest in composition will find plenty to learn from this gifted composer.

3 Feb –24 Mar Tuesday afternoons

Career Development Sessions happen in the Robert Powell Theatre on Tuesday afternoons throughout February and March. These are aimed at Performance and Media Students forging a career in the creative industries. Invited professional guests and emerging artists (including successful alumni) encourage future professionals to identify the range of adaptable skills they take into the wider job market and the industry.

Self-promotion (through CVs, web pages and networking) and self-development are life-long strategies in the Arts and the sessions discuss how to pick up opportunities in wider training and workshops, for example The Challenge Network and Studio Membership at the Lowry. The sessions also drill down to the specific skills and professional awareness needed for a selection of industry roles such as forming a small-scale theatre or production company, working as a producer, actor, short film maker.

A detailed programme will be published on the School website in January at www.salford.ac.uk/arts-mediaNon-public events
