LISTENING GUIDE
Welcome to another year of wonderful music-making with Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Music on Sundays. It has been my pleasure to host these concerts almost from their inception way back in 1856, and none of us look a day older.
Music on Sundays is a unique series in Australia. No other orchestra performs a regular Sunday morning series, which is surprising; it is the perfect time for a concert, little traffic in the morning, a chance to go out afterwards, a concert of a maximum of 80 minutes and a program that is themed but varied. A tapas concert rather than a full à la carte musical experience. I love the variety of music we perform, hopefully many pieces you know and love and also a few that might be new but you might like to hear again after a first visit.
I always look forward to hearing Queensland Symphony Orchestra play with their inimitable style and also the opportunity to inject some humour and lightness into the morning (and the odd costume or two along the way). So sit back, let’s tune the Orchestra and begin today’s offering - a Festival of Folk!

Orchestras sit in sections based on types of instruments. There are four main sections in the Western classical orchestra: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion.
STRINGS
These instruments produce their sounds by bowing or plucking stretched strings.
HarpFirst and Second ViolinsViolaCelloDouble Bass
WOODWINDS
Wind instruments produce their sound by being blown into - the vibrating air from the musician creates the sound.

BRASS
Brass players create their sounds by vibrating their lips. When this vibration is pushed through large brass tubes, it creates a huge sound.

PERCUSSION
These instruments create their sounds by being struck. Some instruments just make a sound; others play particular notes.

David Popper (1843-1913) orch. SchlegelHungarian Rhapsody (Ungarischer Rhapsodie), op.68
David Popper trained in his native Prague before becoming, at the age of 25, the youngest person to hold the position of principal cellist with the Vienna Court Opera, simultaneously pursuing a wildly successful career as a touring virtuoso. He subsequently took up a professorship at the Academy of Music founded by Liszt some years previously in Budapest, where he remained for the rest of his life, making a considerable contribution to Hungarian musical life as teacher, performer and composer. The bulk of Popper’s compositional output comprises music for cello, including four concertos and more than 60 character pieces such as this gypsy-style Hungarian Rhapsody.
Percy Grainger (1882-1961) Irish Tune from County Derry (Londonderry Air)
Australian-born Percy Grainger’s reputation as one of classical music’s most approachable composers is probably largely attributable to his many folk-song settings. After moving to London in 1901, he became one of the leading contributors to the British folk music revival and was among the first to take a phonograph into the fields to record the traditional music of rural England. The Petrie Collection of the Ancient Music of Ireland (1855) is one of the most significant 19th-century compilations of traditional Irish music. It was from this collection that Grainger sourced Irish Tune from County Derry, the melody also known as Londonderry Air or, in the song version with lyrics, Danny Boy. Grainger made several arrangements, including this version for strings.
Henry Wood (1869-1944) arr. Zalva Fantasy on British Sea Songs
Conductor Sir Henry Wood co-founded the Proms concerts in 1895 and remained the festival’s permanent conductor for almost half a century. Wood created many orchestral arrangements for his concerts, including several of British folk melodies. However it is for his Fantasia on British Sea Songs, commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar, that he is chiefly remembered.
Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884) Blaník, from Má vlast
Blaník is the last of the six tone poems making up Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s orchestral masterpiece, the symphonic cycle Má vlast (My country). Composed between 1874 and 1879 in patriotic celebration of the nation’s countryside, history and legend, the set was intended to assert Czech identity within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The final tone poem in the cycle traces the legend of the Blaník mountain, inside which an army of knights lies sleeping until called upon to save their country in its time of need.

LISTENING GUIDE
Zoltán Kodály (1882-1967) Dances of Galánta (Galántai táncok)
Hungarian Zoltán Kodály, along with his friend and compatriot Béla Bartók, was a pioneer in collecting, recording and notating the folk music of Eastern Europe and beyond. For this work, Kodály took as his source a compendium of dances from the early 1800s, ‘gypsy dances from Galánta’, the town on the border of Hungary and Austria (now part of Slovakia) where he grew up. Based on the verbunkos style (similar to the csárdás or ‘tavern’ tunes of Hungary and its surrounding regions), these dances have two moods: pensively slow and fiercely fast!
Richard Wagner (1813-1883) arr. HumperdinckDawn and Siegfried’s Rhine Journey from Götterdämmerung
For his epic Ring cycle of operas Wagner drew on Norse and German mythology. The final opera in the series, Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods), sees the Rhinemaidens reclaim the ring and Valhalla consumed by fire. ‘Dawn Music’ and ‘Siegfried’s Rhine Journey’ from the Prologue to Act I are often dovetailed together in concert (today’s arrangement was created by Wagner disciple – and composer of Hansel and Gretel – Engelbert Humperdinck). In the opera, however, they bookend the farewell scene in which Siegfried and Brünnhilde reaffirm their love before Siegfried sets out to fulfil his hero’s destiny.
Béla Bartók (1881-1945) Romanian Folk Dances
I. Jocul cu bâta (Stick Dance) II. Brâul (Waistband Dance)III. Pe loc (Stamping Dance, or On the Spot) IV. Buciumeana (Hornpipe Dance)V. Poarga româneasca (Romanian Polka) VI. Maruntel (Quick Dance)
It was the singing of a Transylvanian-born hotel maid in 1904 which first sparked Bartók’s enduring interest in the indigenous folk music of his native Hungary and its neighbouring lands. Bartók had often found Romanian instrumental textures to be richer than Hungarian ones; a typical combination might have included violins, guitar, some sort of flute or bagpipes. He originally wrote the Romanian Folk Dances in 1915 for piano, and in 1917 he arranged the set for orchestra. The six dances, based on authentic melodies that he had heard and recorded in the field in 1910-12, provide wonderful contrasts of style and harmony, and include a number of striking features of the music traditionally associated with that part of the world.
