RARE EARTH - GET READY

Get Ready is Rare Earth’s 2nd album, however their 1st release under Motown Records. Rare Earth

was an R&B / Blues Rock band, listening to this album will say it all. Charming, smooth,

harmonious tracks with infectious, catchy sax, bass and drum solo’s. Only after cutting the first 2 ½

minutes of the side-long monster version of “ Get Ready” and releasing the next 3 minutes as a single

made this album a success selling over a million copies. Single hit nr 4 in US Top Ten list and album hit

nr 12 in the Billboards Album Top 100. Interesting side note: The riff used in “Get Ready” is used by

the Rolling Stones on “Bitch” in 1971 appearing on their album Sticky Fingers.

THE RED DEVILS - KING KING

Recorded in King King Club in Hollywood , where The Red Devils had every Monday fixed for a

performance. Exact dates of these recordings are unknown, nevertheless “the best post 70’s con-

temporary live Blues Recordings ever”(Colorofsound). The Red Devils were noticed and signed by

Rick Rubin’s America Recordings. Their obvious talents, vibrant and dynamic sounds but especially

the harmonica playing of Lester Butler (1998) makes this a phenomenal album. This release trig-

gered a series of opportunities: recording at least 22 tracks with Mick Jagger, backing Johnny Cash

and Bruce Willes all of which turned up on Bootleg’s at the time and later released on compilation

albums of the artists. Unfortunately due to the indifferences and uncontrollable substance abuse

this exciting and full of potential blues band only made one actual album.

THE FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS - HIGH WATER

High Water was written and produced by Kim Wilson’s collaboration with Steve

Jordan and Danny Kortchmar, these 3 gentlemen from Fabulous Thunderbird are the

only ones performing on this album. With Jordan on the drums, Wilson’s harmonica

play and less sneering guitar sounds on tracks like “Too much of everything” and

“Torture” gave High Water a different direction than previous Fab Thunderbrids

releases. High Water is an album that leaves you wanting more.

SOFTMACHINE - SEVEN

In Canterbury Scene highly renowned Soft Machine released Seven ( the last numbered album)

in 1973. Orchestrated by Karl Jenkins, Soft Machine shook of the heavy experimental elements of

their previous work and focused more on jazz/fusion and improvisations. This album reflects a

more relaxed and composed sound without losing the quirky keyboards, muffled drums, deep

bass and trance-like organ. All in all a phenomenal and addictive album to listen to.

CHUCK BERRY - HAIl ! HAIL ! ROCK ´N ROLL

Recorded at two concerts in October 1987 celebrating Berry’s 60th birthday. These concerts were filmed

as a documentary movie and include guest appearances on stage by Linda Ronstadt, Eric Clapton, Etta

James, Julian Lennon, Keith Richards on guitar and many more. As far as live albums go, this is one

worth having. Just about holding in your own cheers now and again when for example hearing solo’s

by Johnny Johnson and Eric Clapton on “Wee Wee Hours”. This album is vibrant and lively, clearly

everyone is having the time of their live and enjoying the birthday celebrations.

SOUL ASYLUM - GRAVE UNION DANCERS

This is Soul Asylum’s 6th album recorded and released in ’92 and stayed in the Billboard charts for

at least 76 weeks. The album features their hit single “runaway train” which came in the billboard

Hot 100 at #5 and received a Grammy Award for best rock song in ’94. Various versions of the

video clip were issued showing lost kids in the USA and UK. Aside from this well known single,

the album is one to listen to and will stick with you for a long time. Strong lyrics, power ballads

accompanied by the Dave Pirner’s distinctive voice makes this a great bluesy grungy rock album.

Cowboy Junkies – 200 more miles

200 more miles is a compilation of performances made in their early years as well as from tours

they later made as a well known rock band. The toned down, powerful and deep voice of Maggie

Timmons makes these recorded performances perhaps even stronger than most of their studio re-

cordings. Covers from Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen are awesomely

done with that CJ feel added to the song. This album surprises even the ultimate fan by presenting

old songs in a new way. 200 more miles is a perfect album to start your Cowboy Junkies adventure.
