December 10 th - Holiday Concert featuring 2 nd and 3 rd grade students and 3 rd grade Orchestra. The concert begins at 7:00pm. Did you know the most famous violins in the world were made of wood with tiny holes? It is thought that the reason a Stradivarius violin sounds the best is because the wood that was used was stored in the sea in Venice. The water made tiny holes appear in the wood. The varnish (which makes wood shiny) also had special ingredients in it. Be sure to visit my teacher page for more information on music at York Haven! http://www.nesd.k12.pa.us/domain/270 [email protected] In kindergarten there is an emphasis on singing. We sing three to four different songs that contribute to our learning goals. Some of the tunes we have been singing include London Bridge, No More Pie, She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain, Three Little Muffins, and Here We Are Together. We have also been using books and other stories as way to make connections and tie our activities together. First grade is focusing on the concept of beat. We do a lot of hopping, skipping, walking, and dancing to help internalize the beat of the music. We have been actively listening and moving to several classical pieces including Syncopated Clock and Hungarian Dance No. 6. Second grade music classes are discovering the names of three pitches (sol, mi, la) and are beginning to look at the notation of these notes on the musical staff. This is done through visitation of a virtual town called Tune Town. We have also been singing folk songs such as Old Dan Tucker and John Kanaka. Third grade is wrapping up their Patriotic Unit learning all about the history of our National Anthem. They have also accompanied themselves on the melody bells while singing the song America, the Beautiful. Rhythm review is also underway with a new mystery note being revealed soon. It is such a treat to get to know your children in music class! We are learning so much together. I encourage you to talk with your child about the songs and concepts we are studying. They may have a favorite song or two to share! Students in Mrs. Shearer’s first grade class listened to the classical piece Syncopated Clock by Leroy Anderson. We discussed how the tick tock of the clock in the A section was a strong steady beat. During the B section of the song, it sounded like the cuckoo bird coming out of the clock and flying around the room. Students used scarves to show the tick tock of the clock and the bird flying around the room.
