The Music Tapes, Julian Koster of Neutral Milk Hotel and Robbie Cucchiaro of The Olivia Tremor Control, have created an experimental pop music and performance art project like no other and they are bringing it to Scotland for the first time with some dates this June featuring some great Scottish artists in support, including Washington Irving, Panda Su, Eagleowl and Duncan Drever. Julian and Robbie have spent the last five years bringing The Music Tapes' legendary live shows to living rooms, opera house stages, and everywhere in between - along the way garnering an ever growing legion of devotees enthralled by the band's imaginative and uniquely affecting blend of music, magic, storytelling, and games that collapses the boundaries between pop experimentation, theatre, and performance art. The Music Tapes live show pushes the boundaries of what audiences have come to expect from an ‘indie rock’ band - performing alongside mechanical contraptions like the 7-Foot-Tall Metronome, a mechanical organ tower and a singing television. They couldn’t find a seat on the plane large enough for the metronome this time around, but Static the singing television is looking forward to joining Julian, Robbie and organist Andy on this, their debut trip to Europe! The band has recently been taking their Travelling Imaginary circus tent tour across the US and June 24th sees the European release of their album ‘Mary’s Voice’ through Merge Records. This, The Music Tapes' third full-length album, is the warmest and most

accessible invitation yet into Koster's world - the culmination of a vision he has been realizing for over a decade. Doune The Rabbit Hole’s mission to make Scotland happier and bring art and music to everyone stretches beyond the main festival event at Cardross Estate, August 22-25. Recorded at Glasgow's iconic Arches arts venue, the latest series of Taghadh Bho Na Trads features some of Scotland's finest traditional musicians. New presenter Linda MacLeod hosts eight episodes that showcase the musical talents of the winners of the MG ALBA Trad Awards 2012. Now in its tenth year, The Trads have become an established part of the musical calendar, the awards having grown immeasurably from low-key beginnings at a show in Edinburgh back in 2003. In addition to the musical performances and conversations with winning musicians, each episode sees Linda looking back over a successful decade with Trads creative director, Simon Thoumire and broadcaster and Trads host, Mary Ann Kennedy. This latest series boasts a rolling cast of award-winning singers and musicians, all of whom provide ample evidence of the musical heft and diversity of the contemporary scene. The line up for the series includes: Tutor of the Year Gillian Frame; Folk Band of the Year, Breabach and Composer of the Year, Mike Vass, feted for his critically acclaimed winter soundtrack Decemberwell. Gillian Frame brings not one, but two, bands along to the Taghadh Bho Na Trads stage. Her latest project – along with fellow musicians, Bella Hardy and Siobhan Miller - is Hunter's Law, a band who are confident enough to move between 19th century ballads and James Taylor songs. Hunter’s Law’s sound is vastly different to that of Gillian’s other band - Findlay Napier and the Bar Room Mountaineers. Fronted by Gillian’s husband, Findlay Napier, Gillian is a cornerstone of the group who practically re-cast contemporary folk music as nu-folk. Instrumentalist of the Year Duncan Chisholm and a ridiculously talented band gets the series off to a rousing start with two of his own compositions, The Erchless Scout and Isaac's Welcome to the World. In the same episode, Gaelic Singer of the Year, Riona Whyte discusses how her Argyll roots influenced her singing and repertoire. The first episode provides a singing double header, as serial Trads winner, Paul McKenna, joins Linda to discuss his musical background. The Barrhead-based singer delves into his back catalogue and demonstrates why he was voted Scots Singer of the Year with Again for Greenland, a staple of his live set. Taghadh bho Na Trads was produced by Bees Nees Media for BBC ALBA and will be broadcast on Monday's at 8.30pm throughout the eight part series until 15 July. BBC ALBA is available on: Sky 143; Freeview/You View 8; Virgin Media 188; Freesat 110; BT Vision 8; Live on BBC iPlayer

The wealth of ginger beards amongst audience members and abundance of somewhat colourful language in the banter fuelled exchanges between band and fans encapsulated the definitively feisty Scottish vibe of Frightened Rabbit’s sold out gig at the Corner Hotel on the 8 May in Melbourne on their Australian tour. Supporting their new album “Pedestrian Verse”, their debut LP with label Atlantic Records released in February, this is the band’s fourth visit to Australia, and they certainly didn’t fail to disappoint, receiving rave reviews all round. Fellow Scots act Admiral Fallow opened the show; with their second album “Tree Bursts in Snow” becoming a fast favourite back in their homeland, their eclectic instrumental choices (including the clarinet, flute and accordion) produced an energetic but heart-warming and distinctly traditional folk inspired atmosphere, which quickly attracted much head bobbing and foot tapping amongst the crowd. It’s easy to see how this Glaswegian six piece is becoming ever more popular, and deservedly so, they have recently been long listed for The Scottish Album of the Year award, log on to www.sayaward.com for more details. Frightened Rabbit initially began as a solo project for lead singer, guitarist and lyricist Scott Hutchison, hailing originally from Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, but has since evolved into a fully-fledged band with the addition of four other members including his brother Grant on drums. Since then, their status and character has only gone from strength to strength which was plain to see given their flawless and exceptionally vibrant set. Opening with “Holy”, followed by the likes of “Modern Leper” and “Swim Until you Can’t See Land” the band rolled through a back catalogue of favourites, to much crowd adulation. Cleverly intertwined with more recent tracks such as “Backyard Skulls” and the heavily layered and powerfully euphoric “Oil Slick”, to which the loyal crowd clearly embraced, Frightened Rabbit played with real conviction and enviable passion. Intercepted with Hutchison’s sometimes brutal but always charming anecdotes, cheerfully hurling good natured abuse at punters, the set often felt as if it possessed as much comedy value as it did musical talent. Spilt by a perfectly timed solo acoustic act, Hutchison captured the audience with his soulful and intricate renditions of “Poke” and “Scottish Winds”, the poignant melodies of which seemed to ring true to the patriotic side of the fans, inciting a rapturous applause. When “The Woodpile” begins the first song of the encore, the true colours of Frightened Rabbit burst into life, with the audience vigorously singing along, their impassioned performance ending on an epic high. All in all, it was memorable experience to see a genuinely talented Scottish band receive such a positive and passionate reception down under; the “Frabbits” certainly deserve their well-earned success both at home and abroad. If you want to catch the guys in action, they will be playing at several big UK events this summer, including The Reading and Leeds Festivals (23rd and 24th August) and of course, a true Scottish staple, T in the Park (13th July) www.frightenedrabbit.com https://twitter.com/FRabbits

Native New Yorker and multi-award winning saxophone virtuoso David Liebman joins Tommy Smith and the SNJO in a series of concerts guaranteed to kick down doors, knock down walls and fling open shuttered windows. Day and Night sees David Liebman reunited with the SNJO for the first time since 2001when they performed Beauty and The Beast, an original work by acclaimed saxophonist, composer and educator Tommy Smith. This time around they will be showcasing the supreme art of the saxophone by a true Jazz Master. “Lieb”- as he is affectionately known to fans, students and peers alike - is the “saxophonist’s saxophonist”. Tommy Smith says this of him, “For me, he’s the world’s foremost saxophonist and improviser, creating music with power, passion and incredible, focused energy”. Brooklyn born and bred, “Lieb” literally grew up with jazz. As a young man he saw John Coltrane play at Birdland and The Half Note and the experience proved lifechanging. It was Charlie Parker who had previously fired Coltrane’s vivid imagination but it was ‘Trane who inspired Liebman. Since then, David Liebman has travelled to the unmapped areas of jazz and brought back astounding music full of unfamiliar shapes, exotic colours and daring sounds. After a stint in powerhouse jazz-fusion outfit Ten Wheel Drive in the late sixties, “Lieb” played and recorded first with John Coltrane’s former drummer Elvin Jones, then subsequently with Miles Davis. In a long and continuing career he has always led from the front, most productively in his own projects with Lookout Farm, Quest and The Dave Liebman Group. Always pushing boundaries, pushing limits and pushing himself, Liebman has been one of the very few jazz artists with the guts, the ability and the imagination to walk in ‘Trane’s footsteps. The SNJO directed by Tommy Smith will re-visit the David Liebman repertoire in a shared spirit of adventure, inquiry and intensity. This is jazz without a safety net; played to amaze in risk-laden, heart-stopping tunes such as Night and Day, New Breed, Gazelle, Coltrane’s Naima and a velvet blue version of In a Sentimental Mood. Astrojazz + Lionstage Present - Wee Dub Club Edinburgh : 1 June

Following on from the epic Wee Dub Festival weekender back at the start of February, which saw revellers from across the UK and Europe descend on Edinburgh for 3 days of clubs, gigs and workshops, the Wee Dub have decided to keep the dub fiya burning this summer with a one-off club session at The Caves. They have invited one of the most talented and exciting reggae DJs currently on the scene, the mighty J*Star, king of the dancehall mash-up, remixer and collector extraordinaire, for a high summer party session. He is joined by Wee Dub regulars Riddim Tuffa Sound alongside upcoming MC Parly B, with sound and pressure provided by the mighty Big Toes Hi-Fi Soundsystem. Based in Berlin, J*Star bounced onto the scene way back in 2003 with a reggaefied version of Blackstreet’s No Diggity. Since then he’s remixed everyone from DJ Vadim and Mark Ronson to Madness and Major Lazer. His DJ sets combine a deep knowledge of dub and dancehall with a cheeky eye for the party people on the floor. Serious vibes guaranteed. Riddim Tuffa Sound, based in Edinburgh but hailing from Slovakia, have been steadily building a solid reputation across the globe with a serious of heavy vinyl releases on their own Tuffa Dubs imprint featuring the cream of vocal talent, alongside some great unofficial remixes. They regularly play out across the globe, at the biggest parties and festivals. Their sound is very much in the 80’s digital dancehall vein, with vintage production and booming bottom end. Wee Dub Festival partners Big Toes Soundsystem bring their iconic black and gold 20k rig back to The Caves to provide the bass. Last time they were in session, on the sold-out Sunday session of Wee Dub Festival, we saw the venue bounce like never before. All in all a top line-up for one massive summer reggae party. ‘Trouble Came Looking For Me’, the song that opened each night on the tour, carries weight and resonance when played to a prison audience. It also shows how strongly Ross identifies with his audience. The film also features a concert set from the Gardyne Theatre in his Dundee hometown. Ross explains that the venue has great significance for him because it was where he played his first gig. There, fans are treated to acoustic versions of Deacon Blue classics and new tracks from ‘Trouble Came Looking’ – songs which sound instantly familiar. Perhaps unexpectedly, the Dundee concert cements his reputation as a raconteur as he frames each song with a story. Ross creates an inclusive performance, quickly establishing a rapport with the crowd in Dundee and encouraging audience singing, an invitation rewarded as the crowd take over the choruses of ‘The Germans Are Out Today’, lending the song, written for his late father, extra poignancy. His talent as an entertainer and charisma are offset by a confession of crippling self-doubt prior to the solo tour: “I've had experience before of just doing solo shows and - this may sound really odd - and I've said, "I'm not sure if I've got the constitution to do it."” At the same time, the songwriter long ago realised that his business demands focus and ambition: “If you don’t have some bit of you that actually believes that you can actually succeed then there’s no point doing it.” It's a testament to his determination and prodigious talent as a songwriter that Ross has remained at the top of his game for twenty-seven years. ‘RICKY ROSS’ shines light on one of Scotland's enduring musical talents. Produced by Bees Nees Media, ‘RICKY ROSS’ will be broadcast on BBC ALBA at 9pm on 8 June 2013. BBC ALBA is available on: Sky 143; Freeview/You View 8; Virgin Media 188; Freesat 110; BT Vision 8; Live on BBC iPlayer www.bbcalba.co.uk

Andrew grew up in Glasgow and studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music where he twice won a jazz scholarship along with the Eugene Cruft prize for Double Bass. He went on to take a postgraduate course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in Performance and Communication Skills where he developed his composition, improvisation, and theatre work skills. He worked for several years as a professional double-bass player in London, peforming with major orchestras such as the Philharmonia, the London Sinfonietta, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Glyndebourne Opera, and in ensembles for the Royal Opera House and Gloria theatre productions. Since moving back to Scotland, he has performed with all the national companies including regular concerts as guest principal double bass with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has led

numerous education projects for a wide range of organisations such as the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish Academy Of Music and Drama, Scottish Ensemble, West Lothian and Glasgow City Councils along with other local authorities. He has worked as Musical Director for his own productions with Confab as well as for the annual Gleneagles Musical with Arts in Motion (since 2008). He also conducts and arranges music for a young string group The Hyndland Ensemble, who performed in the Glasgow Music Festival. He recently led the opening improvisation session with 80 players at the ‘Sound and Music’ Summer School at the Purcell School. Andrew also plays and teaches double bass, bass guitar and guitar while playing various other instruments including piano, flute and percussion. While he is currently in demand as a composer, he is always open to new commissioning possibilities. www.andrewcruickshank.com/blog

Vivid Voices A celebration of the art of the singer-songwriter - featuring Nick Harper, Carol Laula and Gavin Moore Edinburgh : 8 June : www.juniperberries.co.uk

Juniper Promotions have been bringing some of the best singer-songwriters to Edinburgh for over 15 years. However, all good things must come to an end and Juniper will shortly be going into ‘hibernation’. To mark this event, Vivid Voices is a celebration of the singer-songwriter, featuring some of the artists who have played under the Juniper banner. From chart toppers such as Chris Difford, Glenn Tilbrook and Colin Vearncombe to legends like Martin Stephenson and Allan Taylor, not forgetting rising young stars, which include Jon Gomm and Martha Tilson, Juniper has seen some of the best of the genre. However, for this special event, they have chosen three artists who epitomise the exceptional talent, hard work and all-round humanity of the singer-songwriter: Nick Harper: After 9 studio albums, a live album, a documentary DVD and his involvement with worldwide cancer charity Love Hope Strength (including Avebury Rocks – which he organised – and record-breaking gigs at Everest Base Camp and atop Kilimanjaro), Nick Harper - the man they call 'Harpic' - has gone from his youthful status as 'son of Roy

Harper' to being seen as one of the UK's premier guitarists and singer/songwriters. For almost 2 decades, he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with a mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado. His 10th studio album will be out in the autumn and he will be playing a mix of new songs and old favourites to the Vivid Voices crowd. We know there will be some new Harperfans in Edinburgh after the 8th! http://www.harperspace.com Carol Laula: Scotland is famed the world over for its exports and one of its finest has to be singer-songwriter Carol Laula. With "a style which bobs around somewhere between the sweet, clear delicacy of Joni Mitchell and the tougher edges of Joan Armatrading", it's hardly surprising that she has built a strong fanbase for her work, both on her own and with the likes of Stuart Adamson, Eliza Gilkyson and Scots Makar (national poet) Liz Lochhead, amongst others. With seven albums under her belt, she still stirs critics to describe her as "Scotland's leading singer-songwriter" and "an undeniably passionate and whole-hearted singer". She is utterly captivating live and her Twitter biography reads "Singer/song-writer/laugh-lover/life-liver!" - that is Carol in a nutshell. http://www.carollaula.co.uk Gavin Moore: For the last 10 years Gavin Moore has taken his time in tending his own branch of a family tree that is among the most celebrated in Irish music. With De Barras folk club in Clonakilty as his base, he has perfected his craft on the Irish, UK, US, European, Australian and Scandinavian folk circuits. With his soulful emotive voice, Gavin’s songs owe far more to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean and anomie of every day modern life than to that of his uncles Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. All the while, though, he is giving them respectful nods. His last record ‘Tonnta’, forged in the magical countryside of West Cork, is a beautiful atmospheric combination of folk rock & traditional Irish influence, which makes assured steps into musical territory as yet uncharted. With a new album soon to be released, Gavin comes to Scotland with a stream of new songs and stories to be shared. https://www.facebook.com/gavinmooremusic GIGnotes: Vivid Voices @ Voodoo Rooms.
