What role do record shops have in supporting musicians - BTBW hosts Edinburgh music industry seminar

Edinburgh : 7 November : https://www.facebook.com/events/369903496475883/

Scotland's leading music business event organisation, Born To Be Wide, is to host a record shop seminar at Edinburgh's Electric Circus on Thursday 7 November. The discussion will focus on the vital role bricks and mortar retailers still play in supporting new acts and how artists, labels and managers can best work with them.

Speakers include Rose Norton, co-owner of Coda, which is Edinburgh's leading traditional/contemporary folk shop, Sandy McLean, owner of Glasgow's Love Music and Darren Yeates, co-owner of vinyl specialist Vox Box. Additional participants are still to be announced. “A single shop can sell hundreds of albums by a self-

released act or small label, as well as generate interest through in-store performances and recommending releases to customers and other retailers,” says Born To Be Wide director, Olaf Furniss. “This seminar is a must for anyone releasing music on physical formats.” Following the panel, the speakers will play a selection of their favourite records and will be available to meet the audience members.

ABOUT BORN TO BE WIDE Born To Be Wide was launched in February 2004 to provide a meeting place for those involved or interested in the Scottish music scene. A diverse range of musicians, journalists, promoters, label owners and friends of music, were invited to play their all-time favourite records unless they were by Morrissey or Joy Division. Since April 2008 the night has hosted seminars covering subjects including A&R, Music PR, Radio, Music Journalism, Sleeve Design, Stage Craft, Music Management, Booking Agents, a Norwegian night and a German special which

included a seminar, a live show by Berlin band Jeans Team and a DJ set by the Consul General. Born To Be Wide also runs the Wide Days convention which takes place in Edinburgh in April and the annual Edinburgh Night featuring ten acts playing during The Fringe, all performing ten-

minute preview sets. The organisation has hosted events in partnership with most of the UK's key music industry associations, as well as creating bespoke panels for the Scottish Parliament, Heart of Midlothian FC and creative industries conference, Go North. In 2012 Born To Be Wide was incorporated as a Community Interest Company and this year launched Off The Record, a youth initiative providing music industry advice sessions, in partnership with Creative Scotland and EMUBands.

From the streets of Leith where a multi media walking tour will showcase local memories, to schools in South Lanarkshire where the influence of traditional Gaelic philosophy on the Scottish Enlightenment will be explored through poetry - onto Fife where new Bothy Ballads will be inspired by stories gathered from local communities, and Ullapool where new music inspired by themes of emigration and homecoming will be performed by young musicians working with Fèis Rois, the new commissions will offer participants and audiences alike opportunities to celebrate Scotland’s traditional arts.

The commissions are supported with a total of £148,470 through Creative Scotland’s Traditional Arts Programme, which aims to ensure Scotland’s traditional arts are recognised and celebrated nationally and internationally. The purpose of the fund is to support new commissions of Traditional Arts activity – of various scales and art forms - that can be performed or exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally - reflecting local diversity, and Scots and or Gaelic where appropriate. Leonie Bell, Acting Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said: “Traditional arts play a unique role in Scotland’s cultural identity, communities are bound by the stories and music around them, our history is kept alive, our future shaped. These diverse commissions draw on different strands of this country’s vibrant musical and literary traditions, creating work that has its own place and meaning in the 21st Century.”

The new commissions which include a musical element include: HIGHLANDS: Traditional fiddle player Alpha Munro will work with Scottish performers to stage three performances in the Scots and Irish traditional music styles spanning the 17th century to contemporary times. The performances will take place across Ross-shire and Inverness-shire. (Award: £7,000 – Applicant: Alpha Munro). Accordionist and composer John Somerville will compose new music inspired by themes of emigration and homecoming. ‘An Turas / The

Journey’ will be premiered in Ullapool and performed nationally and internationally in Canada and Australia by Fèis Rois students. The project will culminate in a book and CD featuring stories by local people offering insights into their Scottish heritage. (Award: £30,000 – Applicant: Feis Rois). FIFE: Fife Cultural Trust will extend the 100% Real Bothy Project to include a new traditional music element and develop a tour of new work inspired by the Bothy Stories gathered in communities across Fife. The project invites the public to engage with artwork and animation, and to share their own stories and life experiences within a ‘Bothy’ installation space, created by three artists. Songwriters will be commissioned to develop ‘Bothy Ballads’ inspired by tales gathered in the Bothy to form part of the exhibition. (Award: £30,000 - Applicant: Fife Cultural Trust) PERTH & KINROSS: Perth Festival of the Arts will commission musician and composer, Dougie MacLean to compose a new piece of music entitled ‘Perthshire Cantata’. The new work, fusing traditional and classical music will be performed at Perth Festival’s final concert on Sunday 1 June, 2014 and another location to be confirmed. Arranged by John Logan, Perthshire Cantata will be performed by leading musicians including Greg Lawson, Principal Second Violinist at the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Piper, Ross Ainslie. (Award: £9,470 – Applicant: Perth Festival of the Arts) STIRLING: Leading Gaelic musician, Allan MacDonald will be be commissioned to create new work titled, ‘The Bruce 700’, which draws on the history and literature of the time of Bannockburn to reflect the themes of nationhood, identity, and Scotland’s place in an international context. The piece will be performed as part of the Battle of Bannockburn commemorations - a key element of Stirling’s programme of events for the 2014, Year of Homecoming and at other venues to be confirmed. (Award: £22,000 – Applicant: Stirling Council). Commenting on the ‘The Bruce 700’, Provost of Stirling, Mike Robbins, said: "We are absolutely delighted to be awarded this funding from Creative Scotland for this commission promoting traditional Scottish music. It will feature prominently in Stirling Council's programme of events for 2014, which is set to be a fantastic year."

Children’s Classic Concerts’ popular percussionist presenters Owen and Olly may feel like cowering behind their marimbas, but they will have to come out to see who or what is going to go bump in the night at Haunted House. Both Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Usher Hall, Edinburgh will be subject to ghostly visitations as the RSNO performs a hair-raising selection of spine-chilling classics at the latest offering in their popular series of family concerts.

Children’s Classic Presenter Oliver Cox said: “Concert halls, like theatres, can be pretty spooky places. Maybe it is something to do with all the music - particularly the scary music – that has been played there over the years. We will be conjuring up quite a few musical ghosts at this concert, with some goosebump-raising excerpts from Berlioz and Liadov.” However, although both Berlioz’s mighty Symphonie Fantastique and Liadov’s eerie Baba Yaga will feature in the programme, there will be treats along with the trickier moments, courtesy of Saint-Saëns’s Fossils from Carnival of the Animals (with Owen and Olly as soloists in skeleton costumes) and Ray Parker Junior’s audience-pleaser, Ghostbusters. The concert will also feature the RSNO Junior Chorus who will sing two atmospheric songs by Savourna Stevenson as well as John William’s Double Trouble from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Children’s Classic Concerts Presenter Owen Gunnell said: “I am particularly looking forward to narrating some extracts from Fraser Trainer’s House Monsters. It is a really original piece which is lots of fun and we hope the audience will find it as hilarious as we do! We loved performing it with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra this summer and it seemed to go down well down under.” The musicians of the RSNO and their conductor Jean Claude Picard will not only providing just the right atmosphere with some magnificently scary playing, but they will also be getting into the spirit of the season with some creepy costumes.

And the little monsters in the audience are also

invited to come along in costume, with a trolley dash in a toy shop offered as the star prize for the best costume of the weekend by competition sponsor A1 Toys. Sponsored by La Bonne Auberge and A1 Toys. Don't miss the fun and excitement of Scotland's best-loved family concerts!

GIGnotes: Children’s Classic Concerts’ Haunted House will appear at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Saturday 2 November at 3.00pm and at the Usher Hall, Edinburgh on Sunday 3 November, also at 3.00pm. Tickets are priced from £6 and are available to buy from Glasgow Royal Concert Hall box office (0141 353 8000) or Usher Hall box office (0131 228 1155).

Fresh from their appearance at this year's Masters Of Rock festival, Kirkcaldy metal group Certain Death are bringing their own brand of rap, thrash 'n' roll to the world of gaming in the Halloween update to APB Reloaded.

Over Halloween APB Reloaded's 3 million registered players will have a horrifying time with a range of creepy new content and chilling challenges. The game's hugely popular Fight Club mode becomes Fright Club, set within an abandoned asylum, packed with petrifying players and ghoulish gang members, while new in-game assets will include: Devil (or bat) wings – for evil players or psychologically damaged vigilantes; Witch and wizard hats - for the ambitious and magically gifted; Pumpkin and bat glow-in-the-dark weapons themes.

Steedo, guitarist for Certain Death, said: “We're excited to be working with Reloaded Productions and bringing our music to a game like APB Reloaded. It's intense and pretty full on, so we wanted to choose tracks that would fit the game as well as the new Halloween update. We hope APB Reloaded players enjoy the choices and the music.”

View all the MNS digital publications from links at

www.musicnewsscotland.wordpress.com

Craig and Charlie Reid aka The Proclaimers have launched the 2013 Scottish Poppy Appeal, calling for the public to remember Scotland’s veterans by forgetting about small, everyday treats and putting the money in the poppy tins instead.

Poppyscotland needs to raise more money every year to continue its work, providing life-changing support to the most vulnerable veterans and their families living in Scotland. The charity has launched an advertising campaign, featuring images with dual meanings, urging people to give up small, forgettable items like pizza, doughnuts or takeaway coffee and donate to the Appeal, to enable Poppyscotland to deliver support in areas such as advice, home adaptations, mental health counselling and mobility aids.

Speaking at the launch, Craig Reid said: “Charlie and I are proud to launch the Scottish Poppy Appeal this year. It’s a cause we’ve always supported and one that means a lot to us. Poppyscotland does a fantastic job in looking after ex-Servicemen and women, and their families too. The more money that goes in the tins, the more help Poppyscotland can provide. We hope people will get behind this year’s campaign and recognise that the

money they put in the poppy tins will make a huge impact.”

The brothers have a military connection as their grandfather, who was in the Royal Scots, died in 1940 while serving as a driver in World War II. Their father completed National Service in the 1950s with the Scots Guards. The Proclaimers’ music also features heavily in the current box-office hit Sunshine on Leith, which has a storyline about young soldiers returning from Afghanistan.

The Scottish Poppy Appeal is Poppyscotland’s biggest fundraising event and is Scotland’s biggest street collection. Following a slight drop in income in 2012, the charity needs to raise more money this year. You can watch their TV adverts @ www.youtube.com/poppyscotland

Poppyscotland’s Head of Fundraising Colin Flinn commented: “There is no doubt about it, times are tough. However, demands on our services are increasing all the time and we need to raise more money to deliver new and existing services to meet the current and future needs of the Armed Forces community in Scotland.

“As we rely wholly on public donations, quite simply it is vital that we raise even more in 2013. The Scottish public has always been terrific in its generosity and we are calling for them to support us once again. We also want them to know that we are putting their donations to good, practical use in helping our beneficiaries.”

Talking about the issues facing veterans, Colin Flinn added: “Veterans can have to deal with a number of challenges after leaving the Armed Forces, from battlefield injuries, mental health problems or social isolation, to not finding the right house, job or knowing how to manage their finances. But once someone joins the Armed Forces family they’re always part of the family. So, whether someone left the Forces last week or 30 years ago, if they need help we need to be here.”

The Scottish Poppy Appeal runs until 11th November. People can donate by putting money in the poppy tins, donating online at www.poppyscotland.org.uk or by texting POPPY to 70800 to donate £3*.

Haddington Music Initiative presents a night of live music featuring highly-acclaimed singer-songwriter, Nick Harper support: Kenny Stein and Rosie Everett

Haddington : Friday 22 November : www.facebook.com/pages/Haddington-Music-Initiative/87849910161

Nick Harper, son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper began playing the guitar from the age of 10 surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up. Nick's talent and energy entranced Roy's fans and it was inevitable that he would begin touring and recording in his own right. The 1994 EP Light at the End of the Kennel was swiftly followed by his powerful 1995 debut long player Seed prompting The Independent to describe him as "hugely talented". To call Nick a superlative singer/songwriter could put his highly lauded guitar talent in the shade, and to call him a guitarist's guitarist might slight his distinctive, soulful voice and passionate songs. Not forgetting the wild ride that is one of his live shows - from personal introspection to biting political satire via a charmingly caustic wit that would make Groucho Marx proud. A former member of Squeeze, 2013 sees Nick on a major UK solo tour in support of his 8th studio album 'Riven'. Nick has also found time to play on new recordings with Lana Del Rey, Newton Faulkner and Steven Wilson this year, via his 6th appearance at Glastonbury Festival. "Nick Harper has a quality that stands head and shoulders above anything else you are likely to encounter…The Verse Time Forgot from the new album 'Harperspace' is as close to a perfect song as you are likely to get." Edinburgh Evening News

Supporting Nick Harper are:

Kenny Stein: An award winning songwriter, Kenny has been writing and performing his own music since his teenage years. In his youth he played in a number of bands that never quite got past the practicing, getting drunk and falling out stage. Fortunately, he found his way and has since been a regular at the various folk clubs and music nights that have sprung up in and around the Lothian’s. He has been working on an album on and off (mostly off) for the last 10 years and hopes to have at least one side finished before the start of the next millennium. Throughout his performance history he has supported Jackie Leven, Kilmarnock Edition,

Hicks & Goulbourn, Madelaine Cave and an Octogenarian belly dancing troupe. With melodies that are graceful yet rugged and lyrics both heartfelt and strong, Kenny’s work feels rare in its largely undiscovered state and a chance to see him play is a rare thing in its self. Rosie Everett: is a 17 year old singer/songwriter from Aberlady in East Lothian. She started teaching herself piano at 11 & then guitar. She began songwriting at 14 & shortly after started performing in school concerts and in venues across East Lothian. She enjoys playing covers with a slight folky element to them, but also writes her own songs which are a mix of both pop and folk. She performed at various venues across East Lothian this summer as part of the ELjam summer tour. www.facebook.com/rosie.everett.music Haddington Music Initiative was founded in 1992 to promote live music within the town. Since then the Initiative has put on numerous gigs, run festivals & supported youth music within the town. Some of the artist who have played in Haddington due to the efforts of the HMI include Snow Patrol, Tommy Smith, The Blues Band, Rick Wakeman, Pete Wyllie, Michael Marra, The Proclaimers & Hue & Cry, Hobotalk, Dropkick & countless numbers of less well-known local bands & artists. SCOTTISH MUSIC CENTRE ............ member profile:

John Maxwell Geddes "The Scottish Music Centre's task is to champion the wealth of talent that abounds in Scotland's musical community"

This is a MUSIC NEWS Scotland series profiling Scottish Music Centre members

John Maxwell Geddes was born in Glasgow in 1941 and studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music under Gordon Cameron and Frank Spedding. He won the RSAM Prize in composition and a scholarship that enabled him to study with Niels Viggo Bentzon in Copenhagen. There are several strands to Geddes' music - various genres attract him; his orchestral music, ensemble music, solo virtuoso pieces, arrangements of folk songs and transcriptions of Renaissance music are often informed by his interest in history, archaeology, astronomy and science fiction. This has given rise to a wide variety of highly successful works, encompassing the surreal humour of Leo, Dreaming..., a quest for timelessness (in Lacuna and the Callanish pieces) and a subtle manipulation of historical accuracy and stylistic authenticity (Wolf of Badenoch, Dances at Threave, Ane Buke O Courtlie Ayres). But Geddes is essentially a composer in the symphonic tradition, and his most impressive work has been written for orchestral forces, although not necessarily in symphonic form or length. His early work revealed a rather tense, almost nervous undercurrent but he has subsequently grown more expansive, while his latest works foretell a growing suggestion of a near-mystical sense of serenity. Works from the seventies include the Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1972), a Connoisseur Concerts commission for Evelyn Barbirolli and Iris Loveridge, and Rune for chorus and orchestra (1973), commissioned by the John Currie Singers. It is also the time of the Symphony No.1 (1975) - a BBC commission premiered by Christopher Seaman and the Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Geddes was associate professor at Oregon State University (1979-80), where he received a research award for his Project Ludwig, a computer-based study of Xenakis. Many of his works have been performed in Russia, and in 1989 he lectured in the Institute for Music (Rachmaninoff Conservatoire) and in the Institute for the Perfection of Teachers'

Knowledge, Rostov on Don. He was guest of honour at the Don Spring Festival 1989 and the Sholokov Spring Festival in 1990. Perhaps best known of his orchestral works is Voyager (1985), a BBC commission for European Music Year, performed in the new SSO centre at its opening in December 1985. Other commissions for youth followed; Soundposts (for the Post Office), for the National Youth String Orchestra of Scotland, Bardsangs (Dumfries and Galloway Festival), Postlude (Hillhead Strings) and A Castle Suite (Castle Toward and Strathclyde Regional Council). His film score Before Winter Winds (1996) was featured at the International Celtic Film Festival in Wales, the Edinburgh Film Festival and on BBC 2. In 1994, Geddes completed a three year period as composer in residence in Dumfries. The following year he was in residence in Dunfermline, and at the Schwabach Festival, Bavaria. Premieres in 1997 included Stars over Carnac for guitar and A Caledonian Pageant, written for Glasgow Chamber Orchestra. 2002 saw two commissioned works for the golden jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen were premiered: Into the Age of Gold (East Dumbartonshire Schools' Symphony Orchestra) and A Burns Quartet (Ayr Choral Society). He received the Lord Provost of Glasgow's commendation certificate for the Performing Arts (2001). In 2007 Geddes became one of the few composers to be decorated with the prestigious Creative Scotland Award. This funded new music for a professional ensemble that incorporated ideas and material created by young people in practical workshops.

The New Vistas project produced a clutch of new works by pupils from different parts of Scotland, all performed by Paragon Ensemble. In addition, Geddes produced four new works for Paragon, and several structures for improvisation (2008). Three new songs were published for the National Youth Choir of Scotland in their Sing Bronze, Silver, Gold series. In 2009 Dances at Threave had performances in Wales, Ayrshire, Fife, Borders, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

A Creative Scotland grant financed a new work for wind quintet (WAKA) which was premiered at two seventieth-birthday JMG/Paragon concerts in June 2011 in Helensburgh and Glasgow University. These included his other quintets Quango (2005), From Davy Jones's Locker (2008) and another new commission A Scottish Folksong Suite (Paragon/RVW TRust 2011). A commission from St Magnus International Festival for Fretwork was performed in St Magnus Cathedral. SCO, Pure Brass and others featured his music. The RSAMD (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) featured two works at its PLUG Festival Wolf of Badenoch (1976) and Solos for Oboe (1974). Irlandaise for violin and cello (2010) was premiered at The Sage, Gateshead, and several Scottish venues as part of the Mendelssohn International Festival. Birthday celebrations continued with performances in London Guitar Festival, Edinburgh International Festival, further performances in UK, Germany and Poland.

2012 saw several local performances: Glasgow Sinfonia, Glasgow Orchestral Society and Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra. The BBC SSO performs Ombre (1984) and a new commission (Ayr Arts Guild/Radio 3) An Ayshire Suite in December 2012.

Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin Archive Project culminates with album and launch concert

This event marks the culmination and album launch of the Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin Archive Project, which was funded by Creative Scotland and supported by the University of Edinburgh. It will be a special evening of music and song - both old and new - in a celebration of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Scottish Studies Archives.

Tasked with creating new music and mentored by award-winning fiddler and composer Mike Vass, seven young traditional musicians have been exploring the vast repository of folklore and heritage. The final product is a collection of creativity: new tunes and songs drawn from collected material, old tunes re-worked, and found voices. We will hear some of this new music performed live: a fantastic opportunity to discover some of the riches of the Archives through musical performance and multimedia.

It takes place on Sunday 10 November at 7pm in Edinburgh's Summerhall in a ceilidh/cabaret style. Tickets are £8.00/£6.00.

This is the second engagement project linked with the Archives in recent years (previously Archive Trails). While this event marks the end of one project, it also anticipates the next: the ‘Remembered/Imagined’ commission in collaboration with composer Amble Skuse and McFall's Chamber.

In recognition of this continuing creativity, the evening will include artists from both previous and future projects and others who have been involved with the Archives over recent years:

Chris Wright: Tobair and Dualchais/Kist O Riches Scots Artist-in-Residence Steve Byrne: Scots singer, Scottish folksong group Malinky, Hamish Henderson Archives Gary West: Piper, Lecturer in Scottish Ethnology (University of Edinburgh), author Voicing Scotland Margaret Callan: Gaelic singer, researcher, author Air Bilean an t-Sluaigh Mike Vass: Award-winning fiddler and composer, EYG tutor, Remembered/Imagined project Alasdair Roberts: Scottish folk musician, Archive Trails Drew Wright: Wounded Knee singer, experimental vocalist, Archive Trails Amble Skuse: composer, Remember/Imagined project Edinburgh Youth Gaitherin’ Big Band: young musicians

Scottish five piece, Dante are delighted announce the release of their album Wake, out now via Stitch Records and available to buy on iTunes. On Wake, Dante triumphantly straddle the line between indie and folk, breathing much needed new life into the scene in the process. Wake has already received glowing reviews from the likes of The Sunday Herald, The Daily Record and Artrocker and follows the release of debut single 'Son' and, most recently, the brilliant album track 'No Original Art'. Pulling on influences such as Lau and Frightened Rabbit, both tracks highlight Dante's unerring ability to produce up tempo contemporary folk music. Dante's 'Wake' showcases the songwriting talents of Seán McLaughlin (a member of Idlewild’s Rod Jones' solo project, The Birthday Suit), the band have captured a modern folk sound that epitomises the Scottish indie scene's uncanny ability to blend contemporary innovation with more traditional values. "... music that is brave enough to leap the gap between genres..." - The Sunday Herald "... an album that is paving the way for modern Celtic music." - Artrocker https://twitter.com/wearedante www.facebook.com/wearedante

TWELFTH DAY Speak From The Start ep : cd / download Release Date: 8 December Speak From The Start is an EP of cover songs by Scottish fiddle, harp and vocal duo Twelfth Day. The duo were inspired to create Speak From The Start after BBC Radio Manchester asked them to cover You’re The One For Me Fatty by Morrissey as part of their 40th birthday celebrations. MICK WEST & MULDOON'S PICNIC A Scots Chorus Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Scots Chorus is a joint venture between veteran Scots singer Mick West and the fantastic a cappella group Muldoon's Picnic. In mid 2012, West and Muldoon's started exploring the different harmonic possibilities of a body of the most interesting and representative Scots chorus songs they could find and, having decided that some of these songs would benefit from instrumental arrangements too, asked well known arrangers Frank McLaughlin and Stewart Hardy to arrange, manage and perform on the project. It is hoped that the CD and booklet will not only be enjoyable in their own right, but also provide a portal for those who wish to explore the great Scots song repertoire further, and be a motivation and inspiration for all singers and musicians to take this materiel and develop to use it to make their own music. COREEN SCOTT Beyond The Sea Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now 'Beyond The Sea is the new album from Scottish singer Coreen Scott. Singing in French, English and Portuguese, the album is a collection of songs from around the world. From the haunting melodies of Sandy Denny's Who Knows Where the Time Goes and Tom Wait's The Briar and the Rose to the thought-provoking lyrics of Weeping and the deceptively jaunty sound of Je ne veux pas travailler, Coreen’s voice soars above the beautiful instrumental melodies and tight-knit harmonies – there is something for everyone on this CD, including lovely interpretations of such classics as the Dylan's To Make You Feel My Love, Piaf’s La vie en rose, and Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac’s Songbird, but also the more rhythmic South African Weeping, the Portuguese Manha de carnival and the lovely French La mer. CEILIDHCATU NordEste /NorthEast Album : cd / download Release Date: Out Now A Brazilian percussionist, Allysson Velez travels to Huntly, Scotland. There he is touched by the very first contact with the Scottish Ceilidh and impressed by the common musical language of the north east of Scotland

and the north east of Brazil. Here he worked with a special selection of local Scottish musicians and a musician from West Africa, who has settled in the area, to transform an encounter into a musical flow of exchanging gifts and virtues. This album, NordEste/NorthEast, documents that exchange of Scottish and Brazillian music, which also inaugurates a new word, Ceilidhcatu, merging the words Ceilidh (a traditional Gaelic social gathering, which usually involves playing music and dancing) and Maracatu (a performance genre found in Pernambuco state, in northeastern Brazil), from which the musicians have taken their name.
