Music Ministry atKnollwood Baptist Church

God calls us to worship with glorious sounds of music declaring that here love is found; in songs of the faithful and tunes that we play, God’s presence is made known among us today. Sing praise that, in music, God gives us a voice, and calls us to worship, give thanks, and rejoice!

Sing praise for the music that’s chosen with care that we may express our deep feelings in prayer, for psalms, hymns, and anthems that help us move on from tears of lament to a joyful new song. Sing praise now for music that gives us a voice to tell of God’s goodness, give thanks, and rejoice.

~Hymn text by Mary Nelson Keithahn, 2001

I tell this story with permission. When my son Daniel was little,

singing did not come naturally for him. He would move his voice up and down a bit but it stayed in that low, grumbly speaking voice range. For more than two years, Daniel faithfully attended children’s choir,

his leaders continued trying to help him, and then finally something “clicked” and he figured out

how to find his singing voice. I relate this to encourage all of you out there who “can’t sing” that you don’t have to be an accom-plished musician to get involved and start contributing. That you don’t have to be discouraged if your attempts don’t bring immediate results. That just showing up can lead to wonderful things if you let yourself be open to receiving them. Throughout my 18 years as a KBC musician, I have been blessed to hear from a multitude of folks how much they enjoy and appreci-ate the music ministry here. I am grateful to be a part of something special and sacred as musicians join talents together in offerings to God each Sunday.

And I am deeply grateful for the many people who contribute to make our ministry all that it is. But, especially in this significant period of search and transition, it is critical that people continue to be invested if we are going to sus-tain what we have—those already in choirs and others who are not. In this booklet you will find many opportunities where you, too, can participate in our music ministry. There are choirs for chil-dren, youth, and adults. There are ensembles for singers and instru-mentalists. There is a place for anyone willing to show up and keep trying, just like young Daniel. After hear-ing his sweet childhood soprano and then his deep bass in the youth choir, I’m thankful he didn’t give up as a singer! • Lauren Winkelman

Meet Our Interim DirectorBryon Grohman joined the KBC

staff as interim choral director in August. He recently completed his first year as assistant professor of music at Wake Forest University, where he teaches classical voice, the-atrical singing, and modern popular music history. Earlier, he served for 11 years as chair of vocal studies at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida, where he trained music majors in vocal pedagogy and song and operatic lit-erature, and conducted the Universi-ty Women’s Chorale. Bryon has been an active church musician for nearly 25 years, having served as minister of music for the Church of Our Saviour, Bos-ton; choir director for Wellington Presbyterian Church, Fla.; and more recently as a singer with the Royal Poinciana Chapel Chorale, Palm Beach. Bryon has been a core member of Grammy-nominated Seraphic Fire and the Santa Fe Desert Chorale. As a professional singer, Grohman has received international recogni-tion for his performances of opera, oratorio, and ensemble repertoire. Recent noteworthy concert engage-ments have included the Evangelist in Bach’s Johannes Passion with Seraphic Fire; Haydn’s Creation with the Florida Orchestra; and

Schubert’s Mass in E-flat with the New World Symphony. He has also been heard as soloist with the Charlotte Bach Akademie, Boston Modern Orchestra, Har-vard-Radcliffe Symphony, Duke Chapel, and Haagsche Hofmuzieck. On the operatic stage, Grohman has been a leading performer with Chi-cago Opera Theatre, Opera Boston, and Opera Europa, Monte-Carlo. Bryon holds a doctorate from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music in vocal performance and mu-sic literature and a master of music in choral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music. He and his wife, Kristin Brouwer, have four daughters, ages 2 through 8.

Finding Your Singing Voice

Chancel ChoirMusic ministry for youth at

Knollwood takes many forms. There are middle school and high school bell choirs; opportuni-ties for instrumentalists in Knoll-wood Brass and guitar classes; private vocal and piano instruc-tion; and of course, youth choir. The 6th–12th grade youth choir meets for rehearsal each Sunday at 4:45 p.m. Interim Choral Director Bryon Grohman will conduct the group, with Lauren Win-kelman as pianist. Adult mentors include Susan Edge and Rachel Wiggins; student mentors from the University of North Caro-lina School of the Arts are A.J. Robinson and Omari-us Credle. The choir sings for worship once each month,

participates in the annual Christ-mas Festival, and occasionally sings programs in area churches and institutions. In addition, the youth choir participates each year in the Cooperative Baptist Fellow-ship of NC Youth Choir Festival. This year will be our ninth con-secutive year attending, and it will take place Friday through Sunday, March 8–10, at Providence Baptist Church in Charlotte.

T he cornerstone of Knollwood’s music ministry is the Chancel

Choir, a group of about 40 talented adult singers. This choir provides leadership in worship most Sun-days from September through June, is the backbone of the annual Christmas Festival, and usually presents a major work or festival in the spring. Interim Choral Director Bryon Grohman will conduct the Chancel Choir this year. His background in vocal performance, teaching, and choral conducting will certainly enhance our music making; and his spirit-filled heart and his sensitivity

to church tradition will support as well as expand our choir’s musical and spiritual message. The choir benefits from the collaboration of organist and pianist Lauren Winkelman, as well as other Knollwood and guest instrumentalists. The choir is also blessed to have UNCSA pianist, ad-ministrator, and conductor David Winkelman as a choir member, and as the choir’s assistant director. Rehearsals are at 7 p.m. Wed- nesday evenings in the choir room on the second floor of Building B. Interested singers may contact Lauren Winkelman.

Body, mind, spirit, voice: It takes the whole person to sing and

rejoice! In our children’s music min-istry, this is the underlying theme of everything we do. The primary goal of our children’s choirs is to teach each child what it means to worship God. We equip our children with musical skills such as reading music, rhythmic and vocal training, and ensemble skills like part-singing, tuning, and blending. These skills enable each child to enjoy a lifetime of praising God through music. We carefully choose music with texts based on scripture or reflecting scriptural truth. These words will often stay with children their entire lives, subtly molding and shaping their theology in later years.

• Concord Choir (ages 4–K) children enjoy discovering their singing voices while learning age-appropriate songs about God’s love. Directed by Rebekah Edwards.

• Carol Choir (grades 1–2) singers continue learning musical concepts through activities, games, and singing as they use their voices to sing God’s praises. This group will participate in worship four or five times during the year. Directed by Lauren Winkelman.

• Chapel Choir (grades 3–5) children learn to read music, and will learn through playing instru-ments and games. This group will participate in worship about once a month. Directed by Charlotte Brown.

Children’s ChoirsA singing faith is a shared faith.

Each week the most import-ant choir of all—the gathered people of God—join their voices to worship with “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs.” (Colossians 3:16) We prepare our children to share in our village hymn-sing each week by teaching them a ba-sic repertoire of hymns. Elemen-tary children gather at 9:45 a.m. each Sunday to sing hymns that teach about God, worshipping God, God’s love for us, Jesus’ life and love, the need to minister to others, and the need to share our faith. In addition, the 3rd through 5th graders in the Chapel Choir partic-ipate in our Hymns for a Lifetime memorization program, where they pass off one stanza of 20 hymns each year for three years. There are bench-

Hymns for a Lifetime

mark awards of engraved hymnals after the first two years, and then after memorizing 60 hymns children earn a trophy and a place on the plaque displayed in the choir room. These rewards are fun incen-tives, but the true reward is the seed of God’s Word planted in the hearts and minds of these children. We hope that each family has a hymnal at home to use for devotions or family singing. New hymnals are available in the music office.

Handbell MinistryAdult and youth ringers are also invited to serve as mentors or extra ringers in younger groups. One does not need to have previous musical training to participate in handbell choirs; all technical and music reading skills can be taught. But since ringers are responsible for their own unique notes, it is, however, necessary to be consistent in attendance and to have a cooperative, team-based mindset. Imagine trying to play a piano piece split among a dozen people—it takes practice not only individually, but even more as an ensemble. The choirs are supported by three sets of handbells spanning more than five octaves, plus five octaves of hand chimes. Interested in ringing hand-bells? Contact Lauren Winkelman, [email protected].

Nearly every Sunday from September through May, one

of our handbell groups plays in worship. Our purpose is to en-hance the worship experience by offering music that will inspire our congregation to praise, meditate, and know God’s presence. Our handbell choirs are orga-nized by age: • Children’s Bells (grades 2–5)• Middle School Bells (grades 6–8)• High School Bells (grades 9–12) • Chancel Bells (adults).

Knollwood BrassOn festival Sundays, our Knoll-

wood Brass ensemble brings an extra level of joy and energy to our worship. Patricia Hughes Ball, an accomplished concert band conductor, instrumentalist, and KBC member, will direct the ensemble this year. The group is open to any brass player, intermediate level and above, including high school musicians. Knollwood Brass play sacred repertoire for brass ensem-ble, works for brass and choir, and

arrange-ments to accompany congrega-tional hymn singing. The ensemble rehearses most Sunday mornings, 8:30–9:30. Interested in joining Knoll-wood Brass? Contact Patricia Hughes Ball, [email protected].

Christmas Festival 2018

Interim Choral Director Bryon Grohman on the Christmas Festival:

Every autumn I find myself long-ing to return to my hometown in

the Appalachian mountains of north-eastern Pennsylvania to experience the beauty of the fall season. When I was a boy, picking apples, raking leaves, and chopping firewood served as physical reminders that winter was fast approaching. Darkness advanced earlier with each passing evening as the rich kaleidoscope of the autumn landscape gave way to an earthly solemnity of walnut-brown, ash-gray, and coal-black. The seasons vividly showcase the circle of life and remind us of our mor-tality. It isn’t surprising that the early church organized its liturgical calendar alongside the changes of the equinox. As nature demonstrates the reality of birth, death, and new life, the church points us to the Gospel and its message of redemption through Christ.

As winter approaches, so do the cold and the dark, leaving us longing for warmth and light—both physically and spiritually. It is during this time that we are drawn to the manger, where we glimpse the Christ Child and behold his great light shin-ing in the darkness. Here, the proph-et Isaiah commands us to respond: to rise and shine—to reflect the light of hope born in the manger. This year’s Christmas Festival will feature music that portrays how light triumphs over darkness and cold gives way to warmth. Works will in-clude Norwegian composer Kim An-dré Arnesen’s “His Light in Us,” Dan-iel Pinkham’s majestic “Gloria” for choir and brass, and Eric Whitacre’s eternal a capella work, “Lux Aurum-que,” which translates, “Light warm and heavy as pure gold, and the angels sing softly to the newborn babe.” We hope you will plan to join this celebration, and invite your friends and neighbors.

“Arise, Shine, for Your Light Has Come”Sunday, December 9 • 10:55 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Suzuki Guitar ProgramClassical guitar has been an

integral part of the Knoll-wood Music Ministry for more than 30 years. A number of Knoll-wood-trained guitarists have gone on to be accepted into the classical guitar program at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. These include Jay Clifford, Anna Jensen, Russell Norman, Jesse Sykes, and sisters Aida and Elizabeth Mitchell. We are fortunate to have as a member of our congregation and an instruc-tor in our guitar program the virtuoso, concert artist, composer, and certified Suzuki guitar teach-er Marty Edwards. Marty holds a master of music degree in classical guitar performance from UNCSA. He has continued his training in several certification programs in guitar offered by the Su-zuki Association of the Americas. A second teacher, William “Bill” Kossler, has joined our guitar faculty. As a per-

former, he has been a finalist in re-gional and national competitions. As an instructor, he is the co-author of the Suzuki Guitar Method and has conducted peda-gogy workshops internationally. Bill holds under-graduate and master’s degrees in classical guitar performance from the University of South Carolina. He currently directs a Suzuki program in Winston-Salem. At Knollwood, as in all Suzuki programs, the training takes the form of private instruction and group classes. Information about openings and pricing for lessons is available by contacting Marty Ed-wards (marty@martyedwardsguitar .com) or Bill Kossler (wkossler@triad .rr.com).

Tabor in the American opera The Ballad of Baby Doe. In demand as a vocal soloist, she has sung leading roles in such works as Brahms’ Requiem, the Fauré Requiem, the Poulenc Gloria, and many other masterpieces. Maggie taught choral music for 30 years in the Guilford County school system. Now retired from teaching in the schools, she continues to teach voice privately and direct or act in many area productions. Want to improve your vocal skills? For lesson times and fees, contact Maggie at [email protected].

Private Voice StudyToward ever-improved singing

at Knollwood, private in-struction in voice is available here. Knollwood member and Chancel Choir soprano Maggie Gallagher teaches three days a week at Knoll-wood and has openings for additional voice students. Maggie is an institution in music and drama in Winston-Salem. Typically, she directs, or directs music, or acts and sings in a dozen theatrical productions a year in this area and beyond. A voice major, Maggie earned an undergraduate degree from High Point University and a master of music degree under the tutelage of Dr. Lara Hoggard at the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. Her first major role on the stage was as Baby Doe

Music together is an early childhood music and move-

ment program for children from birth through five years of age, and the grownups who love them. Music Together helps little ones develop their innate musicality through developmentally appro-priate songs and movements. In addition, family music class-es show parents and caregivers how to help their children become con-fident music-makers just by having fun making music themselves. Originally from Rocky Mount, N.C., Alyson Jamison moved to Winston-Salem seven years ago and began her career as a preschool teacher at St. Paul’s Preschool. She quickly discovered that the most

Music Together effective way to communicate with three-year-olds was through song. In 2014, Alyson became the music teacher at St. Paul’s. Her

passion for both music and children is clear—just ask any of her preschool friends! She looks for-

ward to sharing her love of music with your child through the Music Together program. For more information or to sign up for a Music Together class, contact Alyson Jamison at [email protected].

Knollwood Baptist ChurchAt Knollwood, we are a distinc-

tive congregation of believers with a tradition of being welcom-ing and nurturing. A spiritual home for those of any age, we embody our faith in a holistic way as we seek to grow in body, mind, and spirit. In our spiritual quest, we are shaped by the biblical witness. We value integrity and authenticity in faith development, respect for each other’s perspectives, and openness to interfaith understanding. Together we seek God’s pres-ence through authentic, thought-ful worship. Our worship moves through prayer, creative liturgies, music, and messages to remind us that we are beloved children of God.

The music ministry of Knoll-wood provides opportunities for church musicians of all ages to sing praise to God, to grow in their faith, and to give witness to their Christian experience through “hymns and spiritual songs.” Knollwood Baptist Church is an inviting, inclusive family of faith open to all persons, whatever their race, gender, socioeconomic status, special needs, or sexual orientation, who want to walk in the way of Jesus. Learn more about Knollwood, its people, its ministries, its music, and its connections in the com-munity on the church website (www.knollwood.org) and Face-book page (www.facebook.com/knollwoodbaptist).
