Ely Sinfonia celebrates in royal style with a concert

of fanfares and serenades fit for the marriage of a

future king and queen.

The exciting programme takes in Handel’s Music forthe Royal Fireworks, Mozart’s Serenata Notturnaand Beethoven's lively Symphony no 1, as well asWagner’s hauntingly beautiful Siegfried Idyll andCopland’s Fanfare for the Common Man.

Music for the Royal Fireworks was commissionedby King George II for a massive fireworks display inGreen Park. More than 12,000 people tried to hearthe rehearsal in Vauxhall Gardens six days earlier,causing a three-hour carriage jam south of theThames.

Nobody can doubt that Mozart was a master ofromantic music. 200 years on, his SerenataNotturna are still among the most evocative of allclassical pieces.

The Siegfried Idyll celebrates birth: that of Wagner’sson Siegfried, born in 1870. Ever the true romantic,Wagner arranged for his wife, Cosima, to wake onChristmas Eve to the strains of the opening melody.

Copland wrote Fanfare for the Common Man as atribute to the World War II effort. It is typical of hisspare, open orchestral style, yet is declamatory andclearly celebrates the achievements of ordinarypeople facing difficult times.

When it was first performed, Beethoven’s Symphonyno 1 was declared to be “a danger to the musicalart”. We disagree – come and see what you think!Either way, join Ely Sinfonia for a concert of sheerdelight.
