Formed back in 1990 by Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar), SA Martinez (vocals/DJ), Tim Mahoney (lead guitar), Chad Sexton (drums) and P-Nut (bass) in Omaha, Nebraska, 311 fused hip hop, punk, reggae and alternative rock. The group’s name comes from the Omaha state police code for inde-cent exposure, a number that found-ing member Jim Watson found himself familiar with after he was caught skinny-dipping by the cops.

311 found a following after the release of their EPs, ‘Dammit’, ‘Hydroponic’ and ‘Unity’ on Nick Hexum’s own independent record label, What Have You Records. Their first full-length album, ‘Music’, received favourable reviews but didn’t make a dent on the charts at first. But it gained

Grammy-winning British singer and songwriter Imogen Heap, known for her eclectic style and unique vocals, will perform for the first time in Jakarta this month. Her debut album, ‘i Megaphone’ (1998), was a mixture of self-penned and self-produced tracks, alongside tracks co-written and produced with established names such as David Kahne, former Eurythmic Dave Stewart and Guy Sigsworth. A few years later, she established the collaborative project Frou Frou with Sigsworth, which only produced one album, 2002’s cult favourite ‘Details’, before disband-ing amicably.

In late 2003, Heap began working on her second solo album, ‘Speak for Yourself’, which she released at the end of 2004. Her single, ‘Goodnight and Go’ and ‘Hide and Seek’ proved extremely popular. Heap has also recorded several songs for TV and

momentum and eventually went gold.

The group made a name for themselves among university students with their second album, ‘Grassroots’ (1994), and they had a breakthrough in the mainstream with their self-titled third album, released in 1995. In 2000, the band started up The 311 Holiday, an annual gig held on March 11 in New Orleans. The gig has grown in scale ever since and the 2006 edition saw the band play no less than 65 songs. Most recently, 311 provided a cover of the Toots and the Maytals record ‘Reggae Got Soul’ for the summer-hit film ‘Surf’s Up’.

Although it’s kind of late for The 311 Holiday, we should thank Java Musikindo for bringing these guys here in March – this is the only con-firmed 311 show so far in Southeast Asia! Tyara Putri

films during the past few years, including ‘Can’t Take It In’ for ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘Loose Ends’ for MTV’s ‘The Hills’, and ‘Speeding Cars’, which was used in the third instalment of the ABC mini-series ‘Fallen’.

Her upcoming concert in Jakarta this March is a promo tour for her latest album, ‘Ellipse’. We know that there are a lot of concerts going on this month, but make sure you save some pennies for the amazing Imogen Heap. Tyara Putri

Laju (Rumah Bonita)

After her 2003 debut self-titled album, Bonita finally released her second album ‘Laju’ under the Rumah Bonita label last January. The 16 songs on this album will make you feel like you’re listening to someone’s diary set to music. It doesn’t stray too far from the sensibilities of her previous album and regular performances. ‘Laju’ sticks with the folk, pop and acoustic stylings we expect from Bonita, as well as her superfine voice. Bonita managed to keep her opening track, ‘Rumahku’, as easy

listening as possible and it’s a great warm up song. After getting her listeners’ attention, Bonita play around a little with the second track, ‘Komidi Putar’, which has a fun accordion tune that makes you feel like tap-dancing on an old French folk tune. ‘Telurku’ tells a story about her comfort zone, again using a very playful rhythm. If you’re looking for something a bit different, skip to the 11th track where there are no more playful rhythms, no more accordions, just Bonita’s soulful voice accompanied by a mournful guitar melody. Coming from a musical family, Bonita is familiar with a variety of musical instruments. On this second album, she successfully mixes traditional instruments like the accordion, glockenspiel and Chinese harp to make ‘Laju’ not only worth listening to, but also commendable for the great production values on it 14 songs in Indonesian and two songs, ‘You Cheer Me Up’ and ‘It’s Over Now’, in English. Cheers to Bonita for making a great comeback. Tyara Putri

New releases

Soldier of Love (Sony)

Good things come to those who wait. Sade Adu, the reclusive and quiet soul singer

who takes notoriously long breaks between releases, has regrouped with the band that bears her name and has recorded her first album of new material since 2000’s ‘Lovers Rock’. The album ‘Soldier Of Love’, which Sade co-produced with Mike Pela, was written by the singer along with longtime collaborators Andrew Hale, Stuart Matthewman and Paul Spencer Denman. The album includes 10 brand new songs featuring a variety of elements and moods. The breezy bounce of ‘Babyfather’ detours from the relative starkness of ‘Morning Bird’, while Sade sings the hymn-like ‘Long Hard Road’ as a spiritual. Her palette gets even more diverse

when the slow ballad of ‘Be That Easy’ incorporates a bluesy strain of country underneath Sade’s narrative. These details emphasize how the appeal of Sade’s music is based partly on the subtleties that dress the melody. Stuart Matthewman’s softly wailing sax, for example, turns ‘In Another Time’ into a glistening nebula for a moment. On ‘Bring Me Home’, the ghostly voices underneath the lead vocal transform the song into a dirge, albeit a dirge with a drumbeat.

In many ways ,the tracks show exactly what is brilliant about Sade. Without releasing a single song in a decade, she makes a comeback with songs that artists would die to write about but fear to cover. Lyrics like ‘I’m at the borderline of my faith/ I’m at the hinterland of my devotion/ In the frontline of this battle of mine/ but I’m still alive’, show a writing ability that is seldom seen. Her abil-ity to deliver smooth vocals is a gift, while the ability to take the listener on an escalating ride w ithout a cli-max is undeniable breathtaking, so don’t expect anything less from this album.
