A CH~LDHOOD HYMNDavid R~ Ho~sh~erSlow and expressive playing is difficult. But we all knew this before we jumped into the band directing stew. Controllingpitches, dynamics, phrasing, and stylistic integrity at a lingering pace and doing it well is the TRUE mark of the excellentensemble. With this in mind, A CHILDHOOD HYMN is guaranteed to streeeeeeetch your players! In this short composition, young musicians will be confronted by intense sustained passages, rubato, accidentals, modulation, a wide rangeof dynamics, and something so incredible as to actually “peel the paint from the Walls of Tradition”. Absolutely NO snaredrum has been included in this instrumentation!It’ll take some concentration, but trust me. . .With a director’s encouragement, young musicians CAN make beautiful musicalso! - D.R.H.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Developing better slow legato style playing. To do this, concentrate on breathing correctly, using lots of air. Then, keepthe air moving through all the notes in a phrase. Do not use the syllable Tu, Tu, Tu for legato notes. Try: Tu-du-du and donot let the air stop between notes. Using Tu makes it too easy for the air to stop. When the air stops, the sound stops!Legato notes are connected. If the notes are really connected (not separated) the sound will not stop between notes exceptat the end of phrases or at rests. This selection provides the performers with the opportunity to develop phrases, and toconcentrate on more expressive playing.

Keys: Bb Concert and Eb Concert.Learn both major scales and arpeggios.

NOTE TO THE DIRECTOR: Each part includes the following scales and arpeggios.:

Style:Slow, expressive, and legato. An opportunity to “make music from the notes.”lènuto - sustained for the full length or time.

~g~do - slower and louder, in a broader style.

Dynamics:Piano (p) - soft.Mezzo P (mp) - medium or half soft.Mezzo Forte (mf) - medium loud. Not as loud as Forte.Forte (f) - loud.Cresceii4~ ( ~ ) - gradually getting louder.

Other Musical Terms:Rallentando - gradually slower.

Time Signature:4/4 - four beats to a measure; a quarter note receives one beat.
