As the leaves begin to drift from the trees andcountry colours turn to Autumn Brown, we at theSéamus Ennis Arts Centre have created an artsprogramme of the highest calibre and we hopeyou will visit our centre and enjoy some of thelocal, national and international talent on show.

If it’s music you’re after we have the very best oftraditional, roots and folk artists appearing atIreland’s most intimate and atmospheric venue.Over the years the centre has prided itself increating a special environment where musiciansand singers love to perform in our cosy hallbecause they get the very best of order as ouraudience hangs on to every word or note createdfrom the stage. It was no surprise therefore thatmusicians and singers such as Eleanor Shanley,Matt Cranitch, Jackie Daly, Kieran Goss, NoCrows,Donal O’Connor, John McSherry, Sean Óg Graham,Ciaran Lavery, Compánach and the amazingLynched all agreed to perform at the SEAC overthe next few months.

Last year we joined with the village of (The) Naulto create a celebratory Halloween Parade. Thisevent captured everyone’s imagination and theeffort and creativity from young people andparents was amazing; so we are delighted toannounce the second and even more excitingHalloween Parade will take place on October 31st.The parade will be the finale of a week of fun-filled workshops.

Of course we will have our usual line up ofexcellent art exhibitions, intriguing writerssessions, fascinating cinema from across theworld, creative & educational workshops, crackingcomedy and seasonal Food & Christmas Craft fairs.

We are also delighted to welcome back ourtalented music teachers who provide the highestquality tuition for our many students of all ages inthe SEAC Music School. If you want to learn orimprove your banjo skills or the many otherinstruments on offer, then check the SEAC websitefor registration details.

Declan Sinnott

World-renowned Irish Guitarist, Producer, Songwriterand Folk Legend Declan Sinnott, accompanied byvocalist Vicky Keating visit the SEAC to promoteDeclan’s latest album ‘Window on the World’.Released in May 2015, ‘Window on the World’ is Declan’s second album; despite making music for nearly fifty years, he only recorded his first solo album ‘I Love the Noise it Makes’ aged 62. A founding member of Horslips and Moving Hearts,Declan guided the career of Mary Black for thirteenyears and has worked as a guitarist and producer forChristy Moore for over thirty years. All the songs on‘Window on the World’ were either written byDeclan or co-written with his good friend, OwenO’Brien. Recorded at Declan’s home studio; he alsoplayed all the instruments on the album, with allharmonies sung by Vickie Keating.

Matt Cranitch & Jackie Daly

Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch are acknowledgedmasters of the rich musical tradition of SliabhLuachra. Their new album ‘Rolling On’ draws uponthe rich legacy of this culturally unique area on theCork / Kerry border renowned for its distinctive styleof playing and special repertoire. ‘Rolling On’ offers a wide range of tunes, old and new, from slides andpolkas to reels and airs played in the wonderfullyexpressive manner for which Matt and Jackie arejustly famous.

The words ‘Button Accordion’ and ‘Jackie Daly’ aresynonymous in the world of Irish traditional music.Described in the New York Times as “probably thebest accordionist in Ireland”, his performances withbands such as De Danann, Patrick Street, Buttonsand Bows, Arcady, Reel Union and Kinvara all attestto his wonderful musicianship and versatility. Authorof ‘The Irish Fiddle Book’, Matt Cranitch is renownedas a fiddle-player and teacher both at home andabroad. In 2005, four musicians got together for an informalsession in one of Sligo’s most unique pubs, ‘Shootthe Crows’. Very soon, the Wednesday night sessionbecame famed; with musical styles from IrishTraditional to Latin Bossa and a lot more in between.Encouraged by the weekly rapturous response, fourmusicians, harking from different musical and culturalbackgrounds agreed to join forces and take theirunique styles to the next level; NoCrows was born.Nine years later, the band has had many successesand achievements including performances at some of Europe’s top festivals including Glastonbury. SteveWickham, of Waterboys fame is a founding memberand when available, still makes regular forays withthe band. However the band has become quite aforce in the live arena, even when Steve’s absence isenforced by his Waterboys duties. Sligo bassist EddieLee, Mallorcan guitarist Felip Carbonell and Swisscellist/mandolinist Anna Houston provide thebackbone of the band, joined in recent years byrenowned Russian gypsy violinist Oleg Ponomarevand multitalented guitarist/fiddler, singer/songwriter,Ray Coen bringing his wonderful songs to themulticultural, eclectic mix of tunes for whichNoCrows are famed.

Slow Session

Our Slow Sessions are aimed towards (adult)musicians who are learning an instrument and are at a stage where they wish to take part in a relaxedinformal Traditional Music Session. These Sessions aimto encourage the participants to learn a repertoire ofnew tunes while playing with other musicians at slowto moderate tempos. Eleanor Shanley

Leitrim based Eleanor Shanley is without doubt one ofIreland’s foremost female singers. In September 2015Eleanor releases her long anticipated new album‘Forever Young’ including the first radio single from thealbum; the beautiful ‘Gorgeous And Bright’ written byThom Moore. “I am very excited for the album to bereleased here at home”, says Eleanor. “We are alreadyplanning many appearances in preparation for itsarrival, I’m looking forward to going back on the roadfor a national tour in celebration of its release”. With avoice as effortless and pure as this lady is blessed with,it’s no surprise that she is still as popular in 2015 as shewas in the 1990s; having worked with everyone fromRonnie Drew, De Danann, The Dubliners, SharonShannon, Donal Lunny, to U2 and many more. In 2013Eleanor was presented with an award by LeitrimCounty Council for Outstanding Achievement in theArts, and in 2014 was announced as Leitrim Person ofthe Year. Most recently, Eleanor was presented withthe Danish Folk Prize 2015 at the Skagen Festival; awonderful honour coming so close to the release ofher new album, Forever Young. Culture Night - Local History & Folklore

Origins, settlement and communities of the DelvinRiver Valley in the Naul area. A talk and presentationby Historian & Archivist of the Drogheda Museum atMillmount Drogheda, Brendan Matthews.

Brendan Matthews is a professional Historian andArchivist and has lived all of his life in the village of Stamullen in County Meath. He has writtenextensively on Community History and to date hehas had six books published as well as appearing on TV documentaries in Ireland, the UK, Australiaand the Americas.

At this Culture Night presentation, Brendan willfocus on the origins of people and communitiesalong the Delvin River Valley, which sweeps passedthe village of Naul and also separates the counties of Meath and Dublin (Fingal) and that of the Parishof Naul and Stamullen. Brendan will outline the firstsettlers along the river valley, using power-point slideimages of the area and his talk will take you on a tripdown through the centuries about the faces andplaces, events and happenings of the people of theDelvin River Valley area; its folklore, customs,traditions, history and archaeology.

Inni-K with special guest Rosa Nutty

Inni-K (aka Eithne Ní Chatháin) recently played at theSEAC for the visit of President Michael D. Higgins withLiam Ó Maonlaí and the rest of their band, Ré. Sheblew the audience away with her singular voice andnow she’s back to share her original songs, joined bydrummer and percussionist Brian Walsh and doublebassist Cormac O’Brien. Inni-K has received consistentpraise for her distinct style of indie-folk since therelease of her exciting debut album ‘The King has TwoHorse’s Ears’ earlier this year. Her transcendent voice,beautifully crafted songs, set off with tightmusicianship and arresting stage presence make thisCo. Kildare artist truly “a force to watch.”

This intimate, audio-visual recital of music and songbrings alive the nature, scope and history of IrishTraditional music as described in the encyclopedia,‘Companion to Irish Traditional Music’. It is a fastmoving concert of great variety featuring fiddlerGerry O’Connor, uilleann piper Tiarnán ÓDuinnchinn, flute-player Fintan Vallely, seannósdancer Sibéal Davitt and singer Roisín Chambers. In a hundred tracks of music and song from all Irishregions, they demonstrate Irish music’s hallmarkrepertoire and style. The playing is infused withinformation, context and warmth by a flow of 400full-screen images of people, places and events fromthe lens of Belgian-Irish photographer JacquesPiraprez Nutan. ‘The Companion to Irish TraditionalMusic’ was first published in 1999 to alphabeticallydocument the nature and performance of indigenousIrish music; re-issued in 2011, it doubled in size. The Compánach concert is based on its content,taking its A-Z format to illustrate tunes and songdrawn from each Irish county, émigré region andancient to modern eras. Launch of Exhibitionby Dave West

This exhibition of new works by Dave West is aselection taken from a series of paintings completedon location during the past three years. Thesepostcard-sized paintings are a result of the practiceof painting ‘Plein Air’, a project initially undertakenwith no planned outcome; just the practice ofpainting for it’s own sake. This series now numbersover a hundred and fifty pieces, with paintings fromlocations as diverse as the artist’s garden shed,through travels in the Mediterranean and Wales, to a number of paintings resulting from a monthlong residency in the Loughshinny boathouse(courtesy of Fingal Arts Office). The most interestingaspect of this project has been to see what the dayand location offer and to find some visual expressionor language for that moment where the weather,location and the artist meet. It is a practice ofcommitting oneself to the act of painting andfinding something in the most unassuming oflocations and the most inclement weather.

Dave West’s 'Postcards from Somewhere’ exhibitionwill be officially opened by Artist, Dave Newton.

'Postcards from Somewhere’ will be exhibited in ourEaster Snow Gallery during October-November 2015.

Fortune’s Wheel

Bill Stephens was a daring young man from Fairview,who, during the 1950s, set his sights on honing theworld’s greatest lion-taming act. To this end, the welder-turned-showband-drummer-turned-daredevil acquiredthree lions and began travelling with Ireland’s mostprestigious circus families, the Fossetts and the Duffys.‘Jungle Capers’ with Bill Stephens and his wife, Mai,featured lions and dogs, and culminated with Stephensplacing his head between the jaws of a lion. Unhappily,in 1951, one of the lionesses escaped on to the streetsof Fairview, where she mauled a young man beforebeing shot by police. Named as ‘Best Irish Documentary’by the jury at this year’s Dublin International FilmFestival, locals and members of Stephens’ extendedfamily dust off old newspaper clippings and share theirrecollections with director Joe Lee.

The Donadio Family Ensemble is an extraordinary Swiss-Italian musical family. Toni Donadio has toured theworld since 1990 as part of the hugely successful duo‘Tonic Strings’ with guitarist Nic Niedermann and forover a decade, guitarist Toni (father) and multi-instrumentalist Madlen (mother) have been playingmusic with their son Moreno (guitar) and their daughterDalia (vocals). Dermot Byrne hails from Buncrana in Donegal’sInishowen Peninsula and has played accordion from avery young age. As well as his mastery of the Donegalstyle and repertoire, he turns with ease to other stylesand traditions. Performing as a guest on two Altanalbums before joining the band in 1994, Dermot hasalso collaborated with Seamus & Manus McGuire,Sharon Shannon, Dezi Donelly, Frankie Gavin, TommyPeoples, Tim O’Brien and the late jazz violinist, StephaneGrappelli.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Cooney started hisprofessional musical career playing in rock bandsincluding Bushwackers, Fruitcake and the successfulfolk/rock band Red Gum. In 1981 he bought a one-wayticket to Ireland where he joined Stockton's Wing,playing bass guitar and didgeridoo. Since then he hasbeen actively performing and recording with DermotByrne, Sharon Shannon, Martin Hayes, Mary Black,Sliabh Notes, Séamus Begley and many others.

Bassist Trevor Hutchinson comes from Cookstown, Co.Tyrone. He started his musical career in the late 70’splaying electric bass with the innovative Belfast group,Katmandu and in 1986 joined The Waterboys; recordingand touring until 1991. Switching to double bass, hehooked up with Sharon Shannon to launch her solocareer and in 1997 (along with Donogh Hennessy andSean Smyth) founded the traditional group Lúnasa. Overthe years he has also worked Eric Bibb, Liz Carroll, LukaBloom, Solas, Karan Casey and De Dannan. Highlyrecommended!

Lynched

Lynched are a traditional folk group from Dublin,combining distinctive four-part vocal harmonies withuilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddleand guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublinmusic-hall ditties and street-songs, classic balladsfrom the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish andAmerican dance tunes and their own originalmaterial. Formed as a duo by Ian and Daragh Lynch,the group has gone through various incarnations. As their interest in traditional music and song grew,the brothers began to attend sessions around Dublin,forming friendships with Cormac Mac Diarmada andRadie Peat amongst a whole host of impressiveyoung musicians. After some preliminary practicesessions, Lynched quickly became a dedicated four-piece; releasing their debut album ‘Cold Old Fire’ inMay 2014 to a packed house at the Button Factory,Dublin. Although fundamentally an album oftraditional Irish song heavily influenced by Irishlegends such as Frank Harte, Planxty and TheDubliners, subtle traces of the group’s collectiveinfluences can be detected; from American old-timeymusic, ambient techno and psychedelic folk, to blackmetal, punk and rock n’ roll. Since making the album,they’ve completed a six-week coast-to-coast tour ofthe US and played some of the world’s mostprestigious music festivals, including Cambridge,Sidmouth and Edmonton. Henry McGrane attended Dun Laoghaire College ofArt and Design and began his career in 1989 withDon Bluth Animation. In 1995 he moved to the U.S.to work for 20th Century Fox Animation as abackground artist. Returning to Ireland in 2000,Henry established himself as a traditional artist andhas had many successful exhibitions in galleries suchas The Royal Hibernian Academy and The SolartGallery. Henry’s virtuosity is evident in several genres,including landscapes, still life, figurative genre-scenesand portraiture. But perhaps landscape painting bestreflects both his love of nature and his outstandingpainterly skills.

Norman Teeling is a painter with a romanticimpressionist style and a passion for painting ‘En PleinAir’. Born in Ireland in 1944, he earned a Degree inArt and his teaching credential from the NationalCollege of Art and Design, taking a hiatus from theteaching profession to pursue his creative drive in the Animation industry. Norman’s wide repertoireincludes street scenes, interiors, landscapes, portraits,still lives, and historical subjects. He has exhibitedwidely in Ireland and abroad and his monumental ten painting suite, ‘The 1916 Rising’, now hangs on permanent display in the GPO, Dublin.

Henry McGrane & Norman Teeling’s work will beexhibited in our Easter Snow Gallery during November2015 – January 2016.

The long established Skerries Art School presents aseries of Art and Mixed Media Classes for childrenaged 7-12. Introducing students to a variety of mixedmedia skills, the emphasis is on creativity withrealistic goals. Over the course of 9 weekly classes,students will cover sculpting, modelling, pottery -(slab building, coil work as well as ceramic design byworking with glazes), appliqué needlecraft, puppetrytechniques and much more.

Silver Jewellery Skills

Learn the skills needed to work precious metals in afun and informative full-day workshop with well-known silversmith Fergus Grant Stevenson fromForgotten Silver. Use hammers, hand-tools and eventhe blowtorch! In the morning students will make abeautiful textured ring from solid silver sheet and inthe afternoon use solid silver wire to make anelegant spiral pendant.

The small class size (a maximum of 8) ensuresfocused tuition. Suitable for beginners, all tools andtuition provided. Participants will leave with theirown handcrafted silver ring and spiral pendant.

The silver rings in the image were made by studentsat a similar workshop.

These classes will cover a broad range of disciplinesand media from drawing with pencil and charcoal topastel and paint. Dave is an experienced art tutorwho has taught both privately and in public artcentres. He is also a practicing artist who hasmounted numerous solo exhibitions as well asexhibiting at the Royal Hibernian Academy, RoyalUlster Academy, Royal West of England Academy,the Royal Society of British Artists and the RoyalSociety of Oil Painters. He is a regular exhibitor at theBritish Pastel Society where he won the 2013Schminke Award for pastel.

*Dave will collect €15 from each participant towardsthe cost of materials during the duration of the term.

Paint and decorate your own pottery figures withbright colours, using glitter, bells and ribbon to makethem stand out in your Christmas tree. Catering for complete beginners to advanced players, our weekly

music classes take place in Naul NationalSchool on Monday evenings from 5pm

throughout the academic year.

Classes are available in Guitar, Banjo, Button Accordion, Bodhrán, Tin Whistle,

Flute, Fiddle & Uilleann Pipes.

Enrolment for our September-Decemberterm (10 classes) will take place on Saturday,

September 19th at The Séamus Ennis ArtsCentre from 10am to 1pm.

Fees for the term are €90, payable in advance

Save money by availing of the discounted 'Early Bird' rate of €80 if fees are paid before the 1st class

of the new term, Monday 28th September.

Discounts are also available for additional family members and those who

are learning more than one instrument.

We also provide an Instrument LoanScheme, please contact us for more details.

Most major credit and debit cards accepted.

Tickets cannot be reserved without payment.

At most, but not all events, concessions areavailable to under 12s, our Friends/Members,those in receipt of state pension, students andthose in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance/Benefit.

Proof of entitlement for concession tickets must be presented when collecting tickets from the Box Office.

We do not offer refunds or exchanges on ticketsunless a performance has sold out, in which casewe will do our best to resell your tickets for you.

In an attempt to reduce our environmental impact,tickets will only be printed for collection ordelivered by post when requested. Your bookingdetails will be held at our Box Office and ticketholders can check-in upon arrival at the venue.

We do not have numbered/allocated seating.Seating is available on a "first-come, first-served"basis.

We operate an "All Ages Welcome" policy at mostevents. Please check event details. At performanceevents children must be seated and accompaniedby an adult.

Once an event has commenced, you will be askedto wait for a suitable break in the performancebefore entering the venue.

"Doors Open" times and event start times mayvary. Please check your ticket, or our website, toconfirm the times for a particular event.

The SEAC is fully wheelchair accessible. If you haveany special access requirements, please inform theBox Office when making your booking to ensurethat we can assist you.

The Cottage Café at the SEAC is open 7days a week, 10am - 5pm serving all daybreakfast and fresh, home-cooked lunchspecials. Late opening is in conjunctionwith all SEAC events, serving a range of

evening meals and wine menu.

Take the M1 Motorway and get off atExit 6 (sign-posted for Balbriggan andNaul). When you take Exit 6, follow the signs at the top of the Exit ramp for ‘Naul’. The Village is approximately5km from the M1 Motorway exit.When you reach Naul village, we arehoused in the Thatched Cottagesimmediately on your left-hand side.

By train

The train station closest to the SEAC is Balbriggan, approximately 8.5km.

Taxis are generally available fromBalbriggan town to the SEAC.

The Four Knocks Passage TombFour Knocks is a Passage Chamber Tomb builtapproximately 5000 years ago which bears thefirst depiction of a human face found inprehistoric art in Ireland. It is locatedapproximately 4km from Naul and 16kmsoutheast of Newgrange. The mound is partof a complex of small sites in the area and issignificantly aligned with the line of WinterSolstice sunrise from Newgrange. It’s also one of the best vantage points in Leinster withstunning views of the Mourne Mountains to the North and glimpses of the Dublin Mountainsto the South.

Séamus Ennis, Master Uilleann Piper,Storyteller and Folklore Archivist wasborn in 1919 at Jamestown Lodge inFinglas, North County Dublin in thearea traditionally known as Fingal. His family however came from thevillage of Naul, to which Séamusreturned to spend the last years of his life. Although best known as anUilleann Piper, Séamus dedicated much of his life to collecting andrecording traditional music, song and folklore throughout Ireland andBritain for a variety of organisations.

Dedicated to the memory of SéamusEnnis, the Séamus Ennis Arts Centre is a multi-disciplinary Arts Centre,which aims to develop and maintainArts & Cultural activities in rural Fingal.The SEAC runs year round activitiesincluding Concerts, Theatre, TraditionalIrish Music Sessions, Cinema, Comedy,Talks, Music Tuition, Craft Workshops & Art Exhibitions.
