Music All Saints’ 2018-2019

WELCOME
September 2018 Dear Friends, We are delighted to welcome you to this season of Music at All Saints’! The coming year continues our tradition of offering glorious sacred choral music at both Sunday Eucharist, monthly Evensong, Compline, Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas, and in concert. In addition, we are thrilled share the first season of All Saints’ Chamber Choir’s concert series offering George Frederic Handel’s The Messiah in its entirety on December 2nd as well as small scale sacred cantatas by Dieterich Buxtehude, J. S. Bach, and Heinrich Schutz in early March. We also celebrate the opening of All Saints’ Music School, a community outreach of All Saints’ Parish. Our Sunday Evensong Organ recital series resumes in October and continues through May. This booklet outlines the musical offering for the coming season, particularly the 9 & 11 AM Holy Eucharist services on Sunday mornings. Also included is an envelope for your support of Friends of Music at All Saints’. Whether you are a parishioner or a friend of music, we hope you will consider making a donation to support our musical presence in North Central Phoenix, for the worship or concert setting. We hope to see you at All Saints’ for worship, music education or concert very soon! Joseph Ripka Director of Music

About the Choirs at All Saints’ Music is central to the worship life at All Saints’. All who enjoy music and would like to assist in enriching our worship services are encouraged to join our music program. If your gifts lead you to the Choirs, we have several opportunities to help prepare you for this ministry. If your gifts are non-musical, you too are welcome! We have many opportunities for your involvement. We always need those who are “technically inclined” as well as other willing hands. Please contact Joseph Ripka, Director of Music at 602-279-5539 or [email protected] for more information.
The All Saints’ Choir is our largest volunteer choir. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the choir room (just off the church patio.)
The Chamber Choir is our semi-professional choir whose members are chosen from the wider Valley community.
The All Saints' Day School Choristers is a joint program with All Saints’ Day School and directed by Joseph Ripka. It is a Royal School of Church Music program (RSCM). Children of the Day School are auditioned in the third grade and membership is by invitation. This program serves as the chorus curriculum for All Saints' Episcopal Day School. All choristers are enrolled students of the day school.
The All Saints’ Choristers are All Saints' newest addition to the choir family. Open to all youth in grades K-12. You need not be a member of All Saints' parish or a student from the day school to join. The Schola Cantorum of All Saints’ is a small group of adult voices (alto, tenor, and bass) who sing regularly with the choristers.
The Choral Scholar Program is for high school and early college singers who benefit from the opportunity to sing some of the great Anglican repertoire with the Chamber Choir and All Saints’ Choristers. They are with us two Sundays per month, and are given a small stipend for their work.
The Choral Fellow Program is for college age singers who are looking ahead to careers in music. They graduate into Senior Choral Fellows which are entry level staff positions here at All Saints’.
The Handbell Choir plays at services throughout the year. Weekly rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the choir room, under the direction of Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler.

Choral Evensong A deeply moving service with candlelight, sung prayers, chant, and incense. Sung the Second Sunday of the Month, October through May. Evensong is one of the jewels of the Anglican tradition, with sung settings of the psalms, evening canticles and prayers from the 1662 Prayer Book. Experience the timeless texts of the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis as interpreted by celebrated composers. Evensong begins at 4:00pm and features all of the choirs at All Saints’. Compline Compline is the final service in the daily office of the Book of Common Prayer. Originating in the 4th century, Compline follows the traditional pattern of brief psalms, a reading, prayers and the Nunc Dimittis (the Song of Simeon). The word “Compline” comes from the Latin word for “completions,” as we pray in thanksgiving for the day that is completed, and for safety in the coming night. Services are Fourth Sundays at 8:00pm in the main church from September through April. This is a ‘come as you are’ service and congregants may choose freely to participate in the liturgy or to simply sit in quiet prayer and/or mediation. All are welcome.
