National Museums Northern Ireland was established by The National Museums & Galleries (NI) Order 1998, and comprises the Ulster Museum, Ulster Folk & Transport Museum and Ulster American Folk Park. The organisation receives its core funding from the Department for Communities (DfC), but generates income and sponsorship from a variety of other sources to meet its revenue and capital expenditure needs.

Overall purpose of job:

The postholder will form part of a dedicated Maintenance Team, responsible to the Head of Buildings and Estates and site management team for providing an efficient maintenance service to the buildings and services around the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum site. This will include working on the museum’s exhibit buildings, gallery displays and exhibitions. In addition, on occasions it will be necessary to perform duties at other National Museums Northern Ireland (NMNI) sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1 To carry out all statutory electrical inspection and testing throughout the museum site such as emergency lighting testing, PAT testing and fixed wire tests.

2 To carry out daily general and preventative maintenance throughout the museums estate.

3 To carry out or assist in other areas of associated maintenance, including minor plumbing and joinery work throughout the estate.

4 To assist in the preparation, planning and operation of a regular maintenance schedule in conjunction with the Head of Buildings and Estates and site management team.

5 To use the site maintenance database as a means of recording and carrying out minor repairs works.

6 To order and check electrical materials and other deliveries as required.

7 To be committed to good health and safety and access practice and ensure familiarity with NMNI health and safety policies, procedures and guidelines.

8 To carry out work at heights using suitable access equipment.

9 To undertake electrical and other training as required developing new techniques and safe systems of work.

10 To ensure high standards of management and security of vehicles, stores, equipment and materials, carrying out regular inspections and taking appropriate action where required.

11 To train and mentor selected staff, apprentices or volunteers in relation to electrical skills.

12 To meet and greet museum visitors at all times in a friendly and polite manner, and provide high standards of customer care.

13 To manage and work as part of an ‘on call’ rota providing emergency maintenance cover for evenings, weekends, public holidays and event days.

Leadership and Staff Development14 To undertake appropriate training and personal development programmes.15 Act as a role model to staff and colleagues within National Museums NI.

Communication16 To establish and maintain effective methods of internal communication including the use of

appropriate technology.17 Develop a close and productive working relationship across sites and all National Museums NI

Directorates.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Shortlisting Criteria

1. A minimum of 2 GCSE’s at Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent)

AND

2 years’ previous practical experience as a fully qualified electrician

OR

3 years’ previous practical experience as a fully qualified electrician.

2. Hold a time served electrical qualification with a relevant body such as NVQ or IEE with verifiable certification

3. Hold the 17th Edition of IEE Regulations BS7671

4. Possess a recognised Health and Safety qualification such as CSR card holder or equivalent.

5. Possess a current valid driving license.

Desirable Shortlisting CriteriaPlease note that in the event of a large number of applications, that the desirable criteria will be used as part of the shortlisting process.

1. Possess an additional recognised H&S qualification e.g. working at heights, erecting tower scaffold, etc.

2. Experience of working in a small multi-skilled and multi-disciplinary maintenance team.

3. Experience of managing apprenticeships and mentoring skills in an electrical environment.

General terms and conditions of employment

Electrician at Corporate Headquarters, CultraThis is an indication of the conditions of employment and is not intended to be exhaustive. A full list of details will be provided on appointment.

Hours and Attendance This is a full time post and the successful candidate will be expected to work 37 hours per week. There will also be a requirement to work as part of an ‘on call’ rota providing emergency maintenance cover for evenings, weekends, public holidays and event days. Salary The post is graded on the MT3 salary scale currently £23,925 - £24,975 per annum. The starting salary is normally the minimum of the pay scale.

Pension Staff are eligible for membership of the Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme. Further details of the terms and entitlements under this scheme will be made available upon commencement of employment.

Annual Leave The annual leave entitlement will be 25 days, rising to 30 days after 5 years’ service plus 12 bank / public holidays.
