Director, Museum & Cultural Services Date: October 4, 2018 Re: Request for Transfer of Reserve Funds

Recommendation:

That the transfer of $15,088 from the General Donations reserve account be authorized to offset costs associated with the Riding the Rails Permanent Exhibition, in the 2018 budget.

Background:

Summer 2018 saw the completion of the Riding the Rails permanent exhibition. As Council will recall this was a three-year project commencing in 2016. In the 2018 budget we had budgeted for the final funds of $17,088 to come from a combination of grant and or sponsorship revenue with accommodation of any shortfall to be covered by the General Donation reserve account. While we have been successful in soliciting $2,000 towards the project from the Southampton Rotary the application to the Agrispirit Fund (FCC – Farm Credit Canada) as well as an ask to a number of Rotary Clubs (Paisley, Mildmay, Port Elgin, Walkerton) within the County has unfortunately not been successful.

Victorian Hang-Ups: Language of Flowers and Hair Art

Students As reported previously, beginning in early July, the collections department welcomed a summer co-op student from Saugeen District Secondary School, who worked alongside collections staff, on a variety of tasks including digitizing the collection and cleaning wreaths for the upcoming show Victorian Hang-Ups: Symbolism & Sentiment. Featured below, a game winning grand-slam baseball from 1932, is just one of the dozen objects completed and now online.

Part way through September, Collections welcomed another co-op student from Saugeen District Secondary School. With us a full semester, this student will get a variety of museum experiences including the take-down and installation of exhibitions, collections digitization and associated software, as well as exposure to using primary sources for research.

Museum Munchkins

Responding to requests for preschool programming at the Museum, the BCM&CC has been offering ‘Museum Munchkins’ since 2016. This program offers preschoolers and their caregivers an opportunity to meet new people, socialize in a group setting, and engage in fun and developmental activities, hosted by special guests and Museum’s Education Coordinator. The program is a great introduction to the Museum as participants are invited to stay and explore the exhibits. Following the winter session of munchkins, we began the 5th session of Munchkins in September. This 5-week series included weekly themes of Community Helpers, Yoga, Art, Dinosaurs, and Fall.

County Wide Awareness

Growing County-wide awareness is a strong focus for the Museum, with this goal the Museum has created an eye catching and informative display at the Wiarton Library Branch for the month of September promoting the Museum Explorer Pass and the new “Riding the Rails” exhibit. The Museum participated in the Saugeen Shores Leisure Fair on September 5, 2018. The event provided a venue for community organizations and clubs to promote their upcoming programs. Throughout the event, we interacted with 33 individuals promoting membership, programming, and exhibits.

Upcoming Exhibit Openings

Anishnaabwe Endaat (Where We Live): Saturday, November 3, 6 p.m.

The BCM&CC in collaboration with members from both Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash are pleased to be opening the new exhibition “Anishnaabwe Endaat (Where We Live)” in the renamed Anishnaabwe Gallery. This exhibition showcases Anishnaabwe culture in a broader environmental and cultural context; specifically, the impacts that changing climate and landscape have had on a range of cultural expressions, including subsistence pursuits, material culture and settlement and the evolution into today’s culture.
