With the newly redesigned galleries, we have created new activity guides to spark imagination, creativity, and to foster connections with the core art collections, and visitor maps were redesigned to be more user-friendly and interactive. These items are available in both digital and print formats so families can download a guide before they visit, or pick one up for free at the Visitor Services Desk.

The new guides feature a unique way to experience the Museum. The Family Guide offers fun activities such as an Art Hunt, I-Spy, and even a space to draw your own masterpiece! Looking for a more in-depth, guided museum tour? Pick up the Highlights Tour guide and get a closer look at ten of the Haggin’s iconic core artworks with interesting facts about the paintings, artists, or subject matter. Enhance your museum visit and see art in a new light!

Get creative at the Haggin! 2nd Saturday events are designed for children ages 5-12, and feature hands-on events for families. Activities include art projects, interactive programs and museum-wide events. Reservations are not required, but seating is available on a first come-

Enjoy a special evening at the Haggin Museum.Events vary each month with special guests, live

    music, wine and more!

Grab your friends or make it a date!

THURSDAY, JAN 4 | 7 PMMisner and Smith | Soaring vocal

    harmonies and story-filled, poetic songwriting - Misner & Smith’s

sound harkens back to the bedrock of modern American

rock & folk. Paying tribute to strong influences like Simon & Garfunkel, The Band, and

Buffalo Springfield, they invent a sound all their own, seducing

listeners with music that captures longing and belonging in the same

    moment.

THURSDAY, JAN 18 | 7 PMMark & Cindy Lemaire | Mark Lemaire is known for his unique guitar style: fingerpicking, slap-and-tap harmonics, and a sweet touch that goes straight to your heart. Mark’s harmonies with Cindy Lemaire are so perfectly matched that they seem like two people with one voice.

THURSDAY, FEB 15 | 7 PMArt Night at the Haggin | Sip some wine and have fun as you create art in guided activities throughout the museum galleries. Create your own works of art while surrounded by beautiful inspiration! This event is geared towards adults so call the babysitter and enjoy an evening with friends at the Haggin. Cheers!

THURSDAY, MAR 15 | 7 PMLois Flood | Lois Flood has been performing the exquisite dances of Isadora Duncan for over 25 years. Her interpretations are widely recognized for their dynamic, expressive and dramatic qualities. She is acknowledged for her sensitive and profound musicality as she creates visual music through movement. She has performed and taught master classes in NYC, Paris and San Francisco. Lois is well known in the N. California area, where she performs lecture/dance programs at theaters, museums and colleges. Flood grew up in NYC where she initially studied ballet. She has spent many years teaching Duncan Dance to all ages and is the founder of Diablo Dance Theatre.

THURSDAY, FEB 1 | 7 PMPacific Avenue Clarinets | Five clarinets and an

occasional percussionist play original works and transcriptions for clarinet.

Performances feature sounds from Coltrane to Bozza. Michael

Hernandez, Amanda Martin, Connor Moen, Christina

Severin, and Chris Steffanic work together to bring out a unique “sound picture” of

every piece; whether the work is jazz oriented, mid-

eastern, European, or classical American, every work has a

    distinctive collage of sounds.

THURSDAY, MAR 1 | 7 PMMovie Screening: Dolores | Dolores Huerta is among the most

important, yet least known activists in American history. An equal partner in

co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have

gone largely unrecognized. She tirelessly led the fight for racial

and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the

most defiant feminists of the twentieth century – and at 87 she

continues the fight to this day. With intimate and unprecedented access

to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal

stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change.

    Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

The Museum Store hosted the annual Holiday Open House in early November, 2017. The event was a success! Members and their guests got a head start on holiday shopping while enjoying some early holiday cheer and delicious treats. The Museum Store would like to thank all of the dedicated members and volunteers who help make this a special museum event each and every year.

The Museum Store also hosted Museum Store Sunday in November which featured hand-made items designed by local artists, Rebekah Burr-Siegel and Linda Whittock.

    MUSEUM STORE NEWS

A GENEROUS GIFT FROM THE BANK OF STOCKTON

Join the Mad Hatter, Alice and the White Rabbit at the 23rd Annual Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. This popular springtime event, started by the Museum Store Auxiliary in 1993, is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic

story Alice in Wonderland. You will be able to meet other characters from the book, including Alice, the White Rabbit and the Queen of Hearts; all are brought to life by local drama students.

Tea is served from elegant silver tea services, accompanied by delicious canapés, cookies and other tea time treats prepared by Museum Store Auxiliary members.

This annual event is much anticipated by museum members and sells out, so watch for your invitations during the last week of February and make your reservations promptly.

For more information, contact Jan Gerst at (209) 462-2300 or [email protected]. If you know of families who would like to attend but are not members, please encourage them to join the museum by contacting Visitor Services & Membership Coordinator Celia Castro at (209) 940-6316 or [email protected].

    March 24, 2018 – 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

The Bank of Stockton and the Haggin Museum have long enjoyed a close and collaborative association. As the Bank celebrates its vibrant 150-year history, we know first-hand of their continuous commitment to our community. The museum’s relationship with the Bank dates back to 1928, prior the museum

being built. Since that time, we’ve worked together on joint projects that utilize each of our organization’s rich photographic collections, been fortunate to have Bank representatives serve on our Board of Trustees, and have benefited from numerous financial gifts that the Bank has generously made to the Haggin over the years.

Our staff recently had the opportunity to meet with Douglass M. Eberhardt, CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Stockton and update him regarding our newly renovated core art galleries. “We have long known

how fortunate the museum is that the Bank of Stockton and Mr. Eberhardt believe in the unique educational and cultural programs that we provide. It is gratifying that they value what the Haggin contributes to the quality of life in our community” said Tod Ruhstaller, Haggin CEO. At this meeting, Mr. Eberhardt presented Ruhstaller a major gift to be used at the discretion of the museum’s Board of Trustees. Ruhstaller added, “We’re proud of the fact the Bank of Stockton believes that supporting our institution is a sound investment.”

The Museum would like to introduce our newest member to our staff. Aly Kowalski, Education Assistant, will assist with educational events and programming, docent training, and museum tours. She previously worked as the Membership and Interpretive Tour Coordinator for the Sacramento History Museum

where she helped run the Underground and Gold Fever! Tours. Kowalski has a Bachelor’s of Science from UC Davis in anthropology with an emphasis on archaeology.

“Coming from outside of Stockton,” Kowalski explains, “I had no idea what an inspiring and rich collection the Haggin Museum held. When you

add in the passion and welcoming attitude of the staff and docents, I could not have asked for a better institution to join. I can’t wait to help bring the art and history of the Haggin Museum to life.”

Kowalski enjoys going on hikes with her Great Dane Vader traveling to destinations both near and far.

    HAGGIN MUSEUM ARTIST HIGHLIGHT

French artist Rosa Bonheur (1822 – 1899) was well respected and considered to be one of the most famous female painters of the 19th century. Bonheur drew inspiration from her father, Raimond, who was a landscape painter, political radical and supporter of women’s rights. Raimond encouraged Bonheur’s desire to become an artist and taught her how to

draw and paint which laid the foundation for her future success.

French academics barred women from taking most art classes, which made it difficult for aspiring women artists to develop the skills and professional connections that were necessary for successful careers. Although this was an obstacle, Bonheur did not let this stop her from pursuing her passion and she began to draw animals rather than human figure. She had to visit unconventional places to study the anatomy of animals, and in order to fit in amongst the men, Bonheur applied to the police for permission to wear trousers. Once she was granted permission, she also cut her hair and was able to sketch without distraction and avoid being conspicuous.

ROSA BONHEUR | A PIONEER FOR WOMEN

Leonce Benedite, the Director of the Musee du Luxembourg, said Bonheur “put woman on the same footing as man in art, and, at the same time, won herself wide admiration, based, not on any singularity of life… but on her own unaided, robust, virile, observing, and well-trained talent…she attained an exceptional place in art, akin to that of George Sand in the field of letters.” Rosa Bonheur firmly believed in gender equality and served as an inspiration to not only women artists, but to all women.

The Haggin is delighted to partner with The Eleanor Project and Goodstock Productions for a special Women’s History Month event. Stay tunned for more information!

  • SPECIAL EXHIBITION

87th Annual McKee Student Art Show

Celebrate the arts in education during the 87th Annual McKee Student Art Exhibit, the longest running student art exhibition in the country! This event features the work of student artists from kindergarten through grade 12.

The exhibition was first envisioned by founding patron Robert T. McKee, whose goal was to encourage students by providing a public venue for their artwork. All schools

in San Joaquin County—public, private, charter, parochial and home-schools—receive invitations to submit their work. On average, Haggin receives 1,000 pieces of art chosen by the teachers as the best in their class. The Museum’s Tuleburg and West galleries will be filled with two- and three-dimensional art works created in crayon, colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, oil and acrylic paint, photography, and other mediums.

    McKee Exhibition Judge Selected

The Education Department is pleased to announce the selection of Gabriel Reyes as this year’s McKee Exhibition Judge. Reyes, a Stockton-native, attended Academy of Art University: San Francisco Art School and has been involved with promoting the Stockton arts community as a member, and former president, of the 1850 Collective. The local arts group organized its first exhibition in March 2016. Named after the year Stockton was officially founded, 1850 Collective was an idea brought to life by over a dozen Stockton artists, and nurtured by the growing downtown community. Reyes continues to show his artwork in exhibitions regionally.

THANK YOU!Each holiday season the Museum is beautifully decorated by the Junior Women’s Group Auxiliary, which also hosts the biennial Family Christmas Party. The JWG transformed the Museum into a

winter wonderland of shinning and twinkling lights for the “Shimmering Christmas Party” held in December. Over 400 guests enjoyed a variety of homemade food, holiday music, singing along with elves and visiting with Santa Claus. JWG and the Haggin Staff are grateful for the assistance of the Stockton firefighters

who provide much of the heavy lifting for the event set-up and clean-up. The Haggin’s Board of Trustees and staff would like to thank all volunteers whose efforts benefit our members and visitors during the holiday season.

If you are like most of us, you have just completed gathering your 2017 income tax information for your accountant and are beginning to plan for next year. Discussing income taxes and wills can be very awkward, but are subjects that we all need to address no matter what our financial standing. Six out of 10 people do not have a will. But by preparing one, you ensure that your assets go to the people and institutions most important to you. A will also allows you to make a significant gift with little or no impact on your current lifestyle.

There are many individuals who have designated the Haggin as a beneficiary in their estate planning, in addition to providing for their loved ones. In honor of these generous gifts the museum has developed the 21st Century Club, whose contributors are recognized during their lifetime.

If you are considering making a bequest to the Haggin Museum, it is a very simple process. You can do so by preparing a new will or amending the will you already have. You can choose the size of the gift and specify if you want the gift to support the museum’s overall mission or be designated for a specific use. As with any legal document, a will should be prepared with the advice of your attorney, and your wishes discussed with family.
