Does Murringo have the next Gymnastics Olympian in their sights? We certainly hope so and if local girl, Shannon Robertson has anything to do with it, we would love to be cheering her on from our little village. Shannon, along with her mum, Michelle and little brother Ashton travelled to Glendale in Newcastle to compete in the Women’s Level 6 Competition at the NSW Country Championships during the school holidays.
Shannon’s hard work and effort that she puts into her training every week at Robertson's Gymnastics, right here in Murringo proved very rewarding when she qualified for NSW State Championships which will be held on the 5th & 6th August in Sydney. Fingers crossed and handstands for that!
Shannon’s results on each apparatus is shown below and we are sure that Shannon will be busy practicing her jumps, flips, tumbles and spins between now and the State Championships.
Well Done, Shannon and congratulations to you and your family, who are there backing you all the way. Murringo is very proud of you too!

Talented local rider, Erin Ferry and her horse Ruben have recently returned from the 2017 NSW State Championships in Show Riding at Tamworth. Erin and her mum, Jill travelled up to Tamworth which took two days, for a fabulously tiring but exhilarating time with six “Zone 2” representatives. From the 1st to the 4th of July, Erin competed alongside her six horse-riding friends and came away with a trophy for “Best Presented Zone”. Congratulations to Erin and her mates on a successful trip and well done to mum, Jill.

One of Murringo’s former and much loved residents, Marie Scott nee Maloney sadly passed away on Tuesday 30th May 2017 at the spritely age of 88 years. Marie was the much loved wife of Kevin (dec) and devoted mother of Garry, Michael, Adrian, Helen and Leon. Marie passed away only 7 weeks after her sister, Nell Horrocks that you may remember from last month’s issue. Marie will be sadly missed by her family who have generously sent us the eulogy to share it with all of you. Marie Therese Maloney was born on the 28th December 1928 at Young to her father Thomas John and mother Anne Veronica Maloney of “Tara”, Murringo. Marie was the seventh child born and was baptised at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Young. She started her schooling at the age of seven at Murringo Catholic school where she attended till grade 6. Marie and her sister, Betty used to play duets on the school piano and the teacher used to get a bit cranky with them. Senior Paul was known to slap Marie and her sister Betty on the knuckles when they played the wrong note.
When Marie reached age 12, she attended boarding school known as the Mount Carmel convent in Yass. School holidays were spent back at home at “Tara” and doing farm chores. Helping out with the shearing season in September was a highlight for her. On leaving school at the age of 17, she returned to the family farm, where she assisted her mother around the house.
Marie started nursing training at the Young Hospital known as the Sacred Heart where she studied for four years, before graduating and returning to “Tara”. Marie wanted to move away, but a request from her father was that she stayed and worked around the farm as there was enough work around to keep her busy. Over the next few years, she worked as a private nurse around the Murringo area. Marie lived with Mrs Parkman on the property know as “Orizaba” and after that time she returned to “Tara” to assist a neighbour known as Mrs McDonald who was a diabetic. Marie went there to assist everyday.
When a new neighbour moved into the neighbouring property, the Maloney’s were interested in welcoming the new neighbours (The Scott Family). It was over the next few weeks at the local Sacred Heart Catholic Church, that two old school friends reunited being Kevin Scott and Pat Maloney, who both had attended Marist Bros school in Forbes. It was from there that Kevin met Marie through that introduction by Pat Maloney.
Marie and Kevin courted for a while and thereafter they were married on the 26th February 1956. The marriage extended over 57 years and they were married in the St Mary’s Catholic Church in Young. They went on a honeymoon to Katoomba for a week. After getting married, Marie and Kevin purchased 12 acres of land on the Back Creek Road at Young, running with a few animals. Their children started arriving, first Garry then Michael then Adrian; all the kids started their early days on the farm with their parents. They sold the Back Creek Road farm in 1963 and moved into Young where they brought a house in White Street, which was the family home for many years.
Kevin had a few toys in his time (ski boats), which he enjoyed with a few beers and Marie was always in support of him although she didn’t like the water too much! At this time in their married life, the children kept coming and Marie and Kevin were again proud parents of their fourth child and their first and only daughter Helen, Helen was born in 1965, shortly after came the last of five children in 1967, Leon and many grand children since then. During that time, Helen the only daughter, who was born deaf was permanently boarding at North Rocks Deaf School in Sydney. After many trips to Sydney in the EH Holden wagon, Marie and Kevin made the decision to move to Sydney to be close to Helen. So in 1968 they packed up the family and moved everyone off to Sydney, where they purchased a house in Old Toongabbie. As a family they lived there for 5 years before moving to Winston Hills.
Page 4
Remembering Marie …….
Marie and Kevin made some lifelong friends there at Old Toongabbie, who are here with us today. When Kevin retired, Marie and Kevin sold their house at Windsor and started travelling around Australia. They travelled for over five years before settling back in Barwang street Young, where they have lived for over 12 years.
When Kevin passed on in July 2013, Marie moved from Young to the Central Coast in NSW where she lived for over two years. The opportunity arose to bring her closer to Sydney and she moved to Springwood where she lived over one year. Finally a transfer was available to have Marie move to Richmond, being closer to the children and in early 2017, that move occurred. Marie complained about her new home at Richmond and always wanted to move in and live with Michael, as she hated the food being cooked for her, she always wanted to cook for herself. Her favourite meals were Spaghetti Bolognaise and Curried Sausages. And cups of tea in a tea cup with 4, sometimes 5 sugars!
Marie also loved a good counter lunch at the pub or local club, either some garlic prawns or fish and chips. And always loved some dessert, especially a slice of cheesecake. Marie’s token favourite beverage was a half Bacardi and coke; little did she know that it was always full strength! All of her 14 grandchildren fondly remember Nanna Marie and Pop cooking bacon and eggs, it was delicious because there was about an inch of butter on the toast and it was spread generously to all four corners. Also the lolly jar was never empty and the junk food was in abundance! After moving to Richmond, she would get visitors regularly, but she never settled there. She complained the smoking area was too far from her room, as having to attend a designed area to smoke was something she never agreed with. Marie was 88 turning 89 in December this year; she leaves us all with great memories and will be missed by her family, including her remaining brothers and sisters. Her siblings were Veronica, John (Jack), James (Jim), Bernadette, Elizabeth (Betty), Nell and Patrick (Pat). Bernadette, Jack, Veronica, Jim and Nell have all pre‐deceased Marie. RIP Marie!
Marie can be found on the front row and eight students in from the left.

I’m sure that most would agree that the Murringo Brigade makes a very valuable contribution to the community. As a not-for-profit organisation, we rely heavily on the payment of subscriptions from you, the community, noting that you are direct beneficiaries of the Brigade services.
Did you know that your Murringo RFS subscriptions are tax deductible? Subs can be made by cheque or direct bank deposit and you will receive a receipt allowing you to claim this back. Donations are an important part of keeping your brigade financially viable. We have some great fire fighting assets but it is an ongoing task to keep these up to date and maintained. Every dollar counts so please pay your subs today if you haven’t al‐ready done so. The requested rate remains at $10 per annum (but larger amounts are welcomed!), so please get these to Sam as soon as possible.
Direct deposit can be made into the our Murringo Bushfire Brigade account held at the Commonwealth Bank: BSB No. 062 630 in Account No: 000900053 and please make reference of your name in the description section of the deposit. But you can still send payment to Sam Tout, Treasurer, Murringo Bushfire Brigade, at “Willsee”, Watson’s Road, Murringo NSW 2586. A receipt will be issued. Please fill out the slip below and attached it to your payment and please make any cheques payable to Murringo Bushfire Brigade. Thanks, Geoff King, Brigade Secretary

Don’t leave it till summer when permits are required, snakes are hiding from you and then you will be kicking yourself and asking why you didn’t burn it months ago. Do it NOW!

News from Murringo School…... Debating Stars - Our four debaters, who form part of
the Young Small Schools Debating Teams, had a great
day, taking part in three debates in the one day!
Archie Dowling, Hollie King, Charlotte Edwards and
Christopher Bartolo debated against Murrumburrah
PS, EA Southee PS (Cootamundra) and Young PS.
They were all fabulous, gaining in confidence and skill
with every debate. They will be well placed to lead
our teams when ALL primary students take part in
debating next term.
Lower Division’ Special Place - Last term, Lower Division have been learning all about ‘Special Places’.
Their unit has focused on special places in the student’s own homes, their local area, our state, our coun‐
try and around the world. It has had a big focus on geographical skills.
To celebrate the end of their unit of work, the Lower Division class have established their very own
‘special place’ in the school. They chose a great spot, behind the Year 6 wall. They then had to draw up
some plans for the area, talk about what they would like to have in the area, discuss what would work
and create some designs. They have been building their special place and decorating it. It is looking abso‐
lutely spectacular and the kids are busting to show it off today to their parents. The students have also
named their special
place. They have cho‐
sen a Wiradjuri
phrase—Ginda-y-ma-
nah—which means to
play and have fun.

Murringo’s May Rainfall………………. Total for May..............74.93 mm
Rain recorded on ........4 days
Highest daily total...... 67.31 mm on 20th May
Average for May......... 54.6 mm
Median Rainfall for May...52.58 mm
The year so far ..........252.47 mm
This time last year.... 275.84 mm
65 mm on Friday the 19th was the best one day rainfall since June 2nd 2013 (4 years)
The likelihood of El Niño forming in 2017 is approximately 50%. However, the Bureau's climate model POAMA predicts that the Pacific will begin to cool in winter and remain neutral for the rest of the year. El Niño development has stalled for now. We may not officially have an El Nino at the moment but that has not stopped the High pressure from taking control. The high will be around for the foreseeable future so we can expect mostly fine conditions.
Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) for last 30 days: +1.5 on June 10th
June to August, winter rainfall is likely to be below average, with only a 30 to 35% chance of exceeding
median rainfall. (Median for June is 55.88 mm & July is 68 mm) There is a greater than 75% chance that
the season will be below average. Kindly reported by Ray Dowling
Total for June...............3 mm
Rain recorded on .........2 days
Highest daily total........ 1.5 mm on 6th & 10th June
Average for June......... 61 mm
Median for June.......... 52.57
The year so far ..........255.52 mm
This time last year......420.62 mm
The driest June ever recorded the previous lowest June rainfall was 4.82mm in both 1972 & 1944, 7 of the last 8 months have been below average!
The likelihood of El Niño developing in the coming months is low, climate outlooks for winter suggest widespread drier than average conditions across southern Australia, rainfall is likely to be well below av‐erage for the July to September period. There is just a 30 to 35% chance of exceeding median rainfall. The Bureau's climate model suggests the IOD and ENSO are likely to remain neutral, pressures are likely to remain high over the coming season with the sub-tropical ridge over Australia shifted southwards, and the Southern Annular Mode—or SAM—forecast to be positive at least for much of July. When SAM is pos‐itive, the global belt of high pressure in the southern hemisphere mid-latitudes shifts southwards, pushing cold fronts and moisture to the south of Australia
In addition to the natural drivers such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the IOD, Australian climate patterns are being influenced by the long-term increasing trend in global air and ocean temperatures.
So far July has only recorded 8.6 mm up to July 17. Just 8.6 mm so far this month making it one of the worst July’s in 150 years. Only 3 years have had less & they were all very bad droughts. The “D” word is already being talked about, lets hope we are not going into another drought.
Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) for last 30 days: - 11.2 June 30 Kindly reported by Ray Dowling
