2019 Murray State Football Game Notes Week 5 • UT Martin • 9

THE INSIDE TRACKWEEK 5 NOTES - UT MARTIN -------------------------------------------ON TARGET Preston Rice is currently third in the nation in completion percentage among quarterbacks with at least 25 pass attempts. His 71.6-per-cent (83-116) ranks only behind James Madi-son's Ben DeNucci (66-89, 74.2) and North Dakota State's Trey Lance (52-72, 72.2). THE BEST OFFENSE IS... Murray State is currently third in the nation in defensive touchdowns with two in four games. Only Villanova and Central Connecti-cut State have more with three. RECOVERY OPERATION The Racers currently lead the nation in fumble recoveries with eight after four last week against Morehead State. Murray State is currently tied with McNeese for the top spot, while UC Davis follows with seven. ONE BIG FAMILY Last Saturday's Family Weekend attendance of 11,921 was the largest single-game crowd since 1998 and the fifth largest crowd in the modern era. THE SECOND SEASONMurray State is 30-41 all-time in OVC openers and 13-22 when the opener takes place on the road. The Racers and Skyhawks have met twice in an OVC opener, with UTM winning, 63-38, in 2008 in Murray and the Racers winning, 45-38, also in Murray.

WEEK 4 NOTES - MOREHEAD ST. -------------------------------------------LEADING THE WAYCurrently, the Racers lead the OVC as a team in four statistical categories and individu-ally lead in four categories. Murray State currently leads the league in blocked punts allowed (0), completion percentage (69.2), turnover margin (0.33) and in turnovers gained (5). Individually, Preston Rice leads in completion percentage (71.7), Quinaz Turner in kickoff return TDs (1), Tay Carothers in fumbles recovered (2) and Anthony Koclana-kis in sacks (0.7). YOU COMPLETE MEPreston Rice is currently 66-for-92 on the season for a completion percentage of 71.7 percent. He has completed over 70-percent of his passes in two of three games includ-ing 80-percent at Georgia. If he continues to complete passes at this rate, he would break the current single-season completion per-centage record of 69.4-percent set by Casey Brockman in 2012.

FAMILY MATTERS The Racers will celebrate their annual family weekend against Morehead State. In addi-tion to Saturday night's game, there will be several events that take place throughout the weekend. Sept. 20 7 p.m. - Watch "Secretariat" on the field. Admission is free. Sept. 21 7-9 a.m. - Pancake breakfast on the field for just $5. 8 a.m. - Racer 5K. Race begins at the well-ness center and ends on the field. 2-6 p.m. - Take a tour of the Burton Fam-ily Hall of Champions attached to the CFSB Center. 4:30 p.m. - Dunker's Kidz Zone opens on the 4th level concourse of Stewart Stadium. All activities are free. Sept. 22 1 p.m. - Watch the 4x OVC Champions Racer women's soccer team open league play against SIUE with special "Racer In Paradise" promotions. WEEK 3 NOTES - TOLEDO -------------------------------------------BACK-TO-BACKWith Murray State taking on Toledo this week, it will be the first time since 2015 that the Racers have taken on FBS opponents in back-to-back weeks when they took on Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. AUSSIE POWERBoth Murray State and Toldeo currently have punters from Australia. MSU's Steve Dawson hails from Wagga Wagga, Australia, while Toldeo's Bailey Flint is from just under five hours south of Wagga Wagga in Melbourne. Speaking of Dawson, he had three punts of 50-yards or more on the day for a new career-high, besting his previous career high of two which he achieved twice last season. FORMER CHAPS UNITEMSU's Edmond MGhee and Toledo's Evander Craft Saturday will meet for the first since both playing for College of DuPage in 2017.

A NEW CENTURYDaQuon Green's 101 yards give the Racers their first 100-yard receiver since Malik Hon-eycutt had 137 in last year's OVC opener.

A STRONG SHOWINGThe 17 points and 284 yards amassed by the Racers Saturday were the most allowed by Georgia so far this season as Vanderbilt scored just seven points had 59 less yards against the Bulldogs then the Racers.

WEEK 2 NOTES - GEORGIA -------------------------------------------HOMECOMINGMurray State boasts 10 players from the state of Georgia this season, including Edwin Summerour who is from Athens and the aptly named Christopher Georgia from Warner Robins. IT'S A SMALL WORLDWhile, Saturday will be the first time MSU head coach Mitch Stewart and UGA head coach Kirby Smart have squared off against each other, it won't be the first time they have been on a football field together. Smart served as the defensive coordinator in 2001 at Valdosta State, which was also Stewart freshman year as a student-athlete. A GAME OF FIRSTS Preston Rice's nine-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter of Thursday's opener was not only the first of his career, but it was the first for receiver Brion Sanchious, who is playing football for the first time since high school after playing for years for the Racer men's basketball team. Backup quarterback Brendan Bognar also got his first career touchdown on the night when he found LaMartez Brooks from 46-yards out in the fourth quarter. NO FREEBIESMurray State finished the game with zero turnovers, marking the first time the Racers have achieved that feat since Oct. 29, 2016 against Tennessee State. RECOVERING ASSETSThursday, Tay Carothers became the first Racer since Derrick Townsel against Eastern Illinois in 2007 to recover two fumbles in the same game. TO THE HOUSETurner's 95-yard touchdown on a kickoff return in the first quarter Thursday was the longest by Racer since Pokey Harris put up 100-yard touchdown returns in back-to-back games in 2014.
