The branding day will take place at the Heritage Day, so farmers bring your brands, if this time is unsuitable please ring Earl Pratt Phone 0427645718.

Now standing alongside ‘The Barn” The Museum was also the recipient of a wooden car garage built by Krebs builders and kindly donated by Mr Stuart Barr and will be known as “Zanows’ Building”. Its’ future use at the museum will see one end used as an old time butcher shop and the other end a bakery. Our thanks to Mr Barr for this wonderful addition to Murgons’ Museum. These new buildings will complement our existing displays: the Dairy Industry, Rewalds Rock collection, Trinity Slab House, Castra house, the Museum Chapel, Madelines Manor, the Milking Shed, The Railway siding Display, the Machinery Shed, Antique Phone collection, the Military Display, Sippels Hut, Murgon’s Walkway containing Murgon memorabilia plus many other expanding displays and artifacts. The Museum is open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 12.30pm with admission price being $5 per adult and $3 for Students. Bus tours are very welcome and if prior arrangements are made with the Museum volunteers, a display of butter making can be organised, also morning or afternoon tea and/or lunch can be arranged. If you need any further information please phone the Museum on 41 695001 and be sure to leave a message if you ring out of hours and a friendly volunteer will phone you back as soon as possible .

SCHOOL COMPETITION TO HONOUR AUSTRALIA’S VIETNAM VETERANS

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss today encouraged secondary schools to participate in the Australian Government’s Honouring Australian Vietnam Veterans schools’ competition.

“The Honouring Australian Vietnam Veterans competition offers students in years 9 and 10 an opportunity to explore the service of Australia’s Vietnam Veterans, and to reflect on the importance of remembering their involvement in the conflict,” Mr Truss said.

“More than 60,000 Australian servicemen and women were deployed to Vietnam between 1962 and 1975, and over 500 were killed. While many returned home with physical and emotional scars, all came home with a personal story to tell.

“The competition encourages students to research the individual stories of our veterans to gain a better understanding of their service. Students can submit responses in a variety of ways, including multi-media, artworks, musical compositions or essays.”

The competition is open until Friday, 8 April 2016, giving students two full terms to participate. Schools can enter their best individual student entry.

Winning students will be invited to attend a three-day Canberra Commemorative Programme in August 2016, involving visits to cultural institutions and attendance at the national commemoration marking the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan.

The Honouring Australian Vietnam Veterans schools’ competition is part of the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary national programme, which aims to improve public awareness of Australia’s wartime history, especially among younger Australians.

Further information on the competition is available on the Department of Veteran’s Affairs website at: www.anzacportal.dva.gov.au/competitions.

A bloke was sitting in his garden one afternoon when a truck pulled up in front of his house. The driver got out of the truck, walked to the grassy area by the road, dug a hole, then got back into the truck.

A few minutes later, a different chap got out of the passenger seat, walked to the hole, proceeded to fill it back in, and then returned to the truck. The driver then moved the truck 50 metres up the road, and the process repeated itself.

This went on all up the road. The bloke, who was already a bit upset about the poor quality of the road, couldn’t believe his eyes. He stormed down to the truck, pounded on the window, and demanded to know what was going on.

The driver replied, “We’re part of a road improvement project. The bloke who plants the trees called in sick.”

During Book Week, Year 3 at St Joseph’s School Murgon were reading “Pig The Pug”.This is a story about a greedy bad mannered pug dog who will not share his toys.

The class invited in Mrs Rowberry and her Labrador, (Penny) for a visit. Mrs Rowberry took us through Penny’s training and showed the students how to train a dog to be respectful and well mannered.

She also taught the students how to teach a dog to shake hands and do high fives. The Year 3’s videoed this on their i pads, which they then used to write out the correct procedure of instructions.

SOUTH BURNETT PARKINSON’S SUPPORT AND SOCIAL GROUP

On Monday 31st August, members of the South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group met at Murgon and had a very enjoyable morning catching up with each other and hearing about the latest information re Parkinson’s. The meeting was held at Southern Cross Care (Castra), 2 Cooper Street Murgon, starting at 10am and finishing at 12.00pm. It is always nice to chat to each other over a cup of tea or coffee with some yummy food to go with it.

Have you all been doing your exercises as whether you have Parkinson’s or not, it is a good idea to be in the best health that you can. It is never too late to start an exercise regime, but please check with your doctor, physiotherapist or exercise physiologist before you begin.

The next meeting for the Group will be held on Monday 14th September and will be held at Orana Lutheran Complex (Administration Centre) 24 MacDiarmid Street, Kingaroy. The guest speaker for the morning will be an Exercise Physiologist so why not mark it in your calendar now.

The next meeting for the Murgon Group will be Monday 26th October commencing at 10am. We look forward to meeting you all.

Did you know that the month of September has been designated as National Parkinson’s Month during which people are made aware of Parkinson’s disease and the effect that it can have on you. The fight against Parkinson’s disease is as crucial as ever. There are 17,000 Queenslanders in the Parkinson’s community in Queensland. There are over 30 Aussies diagnosed with Parkinson’s each and every day and is the second most common neurological condition in Australia – hard to believe but it is true.

For further information re our Group, contact Maree on (07) 4163 6010.

It is wonderful to see, another new small business in our community.

Fox Beauty & Nails, as the name suggests is a small beauty therapy salon, located within our local SB PCYC. It is owned and operated by Kate Fox, with qualifications in waxing, facials and other services she is quickly becoming the place to go to have all your beauty therapy needs taken care of.

“I was just operating from home, but was starting to have a lot more interest since moving from Hivesville into Murgon. It was when the conversation came up amongst friends that the suggestion was made that I should have a look around for a small space to operate out of. Through mutual friends I was introduced to Gina Oberle at Original Hair By Gina and she introduced me to the SB

PCYC team and the rest as they say is history”.

Using only salon quality products Kate has been able to provide a high quality standard of service whilst also ensuring that prices are kept realistic. “I could charge at the higher end of the scale, but then I would miss out on 70% of my business, I want to be a supporter of my community and therefore am offering these services at the lowest price possible without sacrificing quality or my business. I utilise smart marketing techniques and social media to advertise and have a low cost website for general information”.

Business has been booming as Kate’s reputation for high quality salon services has quickly spread amongst our community. Don’t be fooled by the small shop front either, her salon is clean and comfortable and has a very intimate feel about it. The shop colours are warm and inviting and the art on the walls adds a pop of sophistication. Moving forward Kate is going to complete further qualifications in Body Piercing and Eyelash Extensions to offer more services as requested by her clients.

Currently Kate offers the following services; Manicures & Pedicures, Acrylic Nails, Waxing,

Spray Tanning, Tape Hair Extensions, Galvanic Spa Facials & Makeup Services. The salon is now equipped with an Eftpos machine for a more convenient salon experience.

To make an appointment simply phone 0403 070 983 or message Kate via Facebook.

Once again let’s show our wonderful community spirit and welcome Kate by supporting her in way of keep our business local.

Chairpersons Report 2014-2015South Burnett PCYC

It is with pleasure I present my Chairpersons report:“Welcome to where “IT ALL STARTS HERE” at the South Burnett PCYC”. The South Burnett PCYC was well established by our previous Branch Manager Michael Eadie and it has

continued in good hands by our current Branch Manager Rod Gelderblom and Relief Managers Jaimie and Clarissa Hastie, Shane Palmer and currently Danielle Gordon. We have a very modern fully equipped gymnasium which would be the envy of many other clubs, a well established Kitchen, modern meeting rooms and the large sports building and squash courts. We are glad to report we have 450 financial members and we regularly have at both Murgon and Cherbourg 6,000 users of the facility a month to a total of 72,000 for the year. We are open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7am to 8 pm and on Tuesday and Thursday from 8am to 8.00pm and on some special occasions Saturdays (We provide a social, sporting and recreational centre for all community members and there is something for all age groups).

Notable achievements were obtained during the year and we will record a profit of $16,085 for our fifth complete year of operation

Our voluntary committee were: Sergeant Michael Eadie (Manager) replaced by Sergeant Rod Gelderblom, Leo Geraghty (Chairperson), Paula Nunan (Sport and Recreation Coordinator) for a short period, Warren Collins (Cherbourg), Kathy Duff (local Council Representative), Jamie Hastie, Stacey Perrett, Bruce Sommerfeld and Felicity Dascombe.

Tremendous added support has also been given by our much appreciated Karen Sanewski in the office and part time volunteers and coaches like Prue and Ricky Collard, Max Harvey, Stacey Perrett, Tracey Barnett, Kerry Oldfield, Pam Jones, Paula Nunan, Bobby Kozak, Alan Foster, Gina Oberle, Barry Buckley, Bill and Cheryl Horner, Vicky Perry, The Youth Management Team, Kane Brunjes who coordinated the Graffiti Art program during Youth Week, our local Police who have volunteered their time for Friday Night Live and of course our management committee members. Special thanks to Sgt Laurie Macri (PCYC Zone Development Manager), Sgt Jason Hopgood (Zone 1 Youth Club Coordinator) and Sgt Lance Guteridge (Murgon Officer in Charge) for their guidance and support and to Sgt Michael Eadie who returned to us for a period whilst our new manager was being selected.

Many thanks to our members and volunteers who have established a now profitable Outside School hours care at Taabinga in Kingaroy. Sincere thanks also to those people who volunteered and raised money from our program “Time for Kids” that we ran in Kingaroy Shopping World.

During these past twelve months added costs have faced us continually in replacing all our lighting with energy efficient bulbs and tubes, sending volunteers away for training, Purchase of major Gym equipment, Office equipment and Staff etc. The complex has expanded and necessitated extensive improvements and it has been a great challenge to supply the different equipment needed.

We have been organizing many programs for indigenous sport and recreation at the Les Stewart Sports Complex at Cherbourg and credit should be given to Max Harvey for the fantastic job he has done, Max has since taken a similar position in far North Queensland and we welcome his replacement Wade Charles to the SB PCYC.

The complex has been the venue for a mixture of sport and many other notable events, Gymnasium, Tennis, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Over 50 Fitness (SHAB), Squash, Active after school sports, Tiny Tots, Gymnastics, Yoga, Old Time Dancing, Fitness Classes like Body Pump, Grit Cardio, Combat, Grit Strength, Mini Boot Camp, Easy Fit, Box Fit and Weights and also to work with the Murgon Show Society who require use of some of the building during show time, the Annual Rotary Murgon Music Muster, the Under 43kg Junior Football Carnival and the Ambulance and Fire fighters Bicycle Ride for Burns . The police Department continually use our facility for training, in the use of Taser and for operational skills training.

Major renovations and issues with the squash courts are being addressed and will be completed during the oncoming year. During the year we had a very successful thorough State Office Branch Performance Review of the South Burnett PCYC which was well attended by most committee members

We have heavily focused on training for volunteers interested in coaching and several of our volunteers have obtained coaching certificates.

One of the many highlights of the year would still have to be The Friday Night Live program with attendances of between 80 and 200 children a night. Children attended from Murgon, Cherbourg, Wondai and Goomeri and the help from the many volunteers, face painters, police, and Pursers bus drivers is much appreciated. We attended and promoted the Murgon Christmas carnival and Cycling Qld raising money manning the food stalls, attended the Bloomin Beautiful Blackbutt Festival, held a Movie Night at Wondai for their famous Emu fund raiser and were a major part of the Murgon to Cherbourg Reconciliation Fun Run.

In its second year we are working hard to ensure this year’s Bridal EXPO is a similar success to that of last year.We wish to thank the social media (particularly Crow FM, the Murgon Moments) for continually promoting the

activities of our SB PCYC, and the relieving managers whilst Michael was on holidays. We are inviting everyone to once again come and have a look at the South Burnett PCYC in Macalister Street Murgon and all the changes that are continuing since its inception.

We are very grateful to all the different organizations that have helped us with grants. I am much appreciative of the support from the committee and our volunteers throughout this year and I would

like to thank them sincerely for their efforts. We still need to keep thinking of ways to widen our volunteer base and their involvement in funding and running the PCYC. Once again the year ahead will again be more challenging for the new committee but hopefully rewarding if everybody shows enthusiasm and commitment towards the goals of our PCYC and we can draw on members to assist in the development of our centre as a continued hub of community advancement and diversity.

I would like to welcome our new board members and look forward to working with them. With the backing of the Queensland Police Department, hard working local volunteers, a voluntary committee helping in steering of this wonderful organization and The South Burnett Regional Council who support and work so closely with us and who supplied the venue (that would be a credit to any sporting and fitness organization), the South Burnett PCYC in Murgon is still a great success story.

VIETNAM HISTORYStory told to Bob Meehan by Noel Hains

Way back in 1968-69, Victor Company, New Zealand infantry were attached to 4 RAR.

While on operations near the Courtney Rubber Plantation in the north of Phuoc Tuy Province,

South Vietnam, a Forward scout saw something that didn’t look right in the thick scrub in front of him. A section of their fineness moved forward to discover an old French Citroën car. They dragged it clear of the undergrowth and took it back to Nui Dat, after a little mechanical work and a new paint job, they had it up and running, but they were instructed to get rid of it as it was not military issued. Not to be out-done by the authorities, some red and white paint mixed together, they painted it PINK and then donated it to Sister Pam Terry (Nurse) of the RNZNC to be used by them to drive around Vung Tau. This was then passed on to each of the Aussie and Kiwi nurses over the following years.

Spring is a beautiful time of the year! Discover the diversity of gardening in southern inland Queensland and make the Wondai 2015 Spring Garden Expo at the Wondai Sportsground your destination on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of September. This will be the 10th Wondai Spring Garden Expo, and the 22nd year of Wondai Garden Expo, one of the most successful and long-lived of the region’s festival.

Our Committee members are often asked the question of what we do with the money raised from each Expo. It should first be made clear that all Committee positions are completely voluntary. Then there are services such as cleaning and the disposal of waste, repairs and general maintenance which must be paid for. We do depend heavily on other organizations to perform many of the tasks which are necessary to present the Expo to you and the stallholders and we take great pleasure in being able to give donations to these people by way of appreciation. Capital improvements include repairs to a toilet block, building of new shelter roofs, improvements to the electricity supply in the pavilion and on the grounds, installation of a broadcast system and the installation of roof ventilators in the pavilion. The major recurring expense item is for publicity and advertising, and without that we would not get the terrific response from patrons and stallholders which Expo enjoys.

Despite various changes of management over the years, Wondai Garden Expo continues to evolve and grow, and it is exciting to see how the Spring Expo has developed its own special character. Stallholders have answered the challenge and adapted their presentations to reflect the season, making this Expo distinct from the Autumn Expo. With a record number of stalls attending the Autumn Expo, we are confident of a great showing for Spring.

Expo is a place of education and entertainment as well as trading, and we are happy to have renowned Garden Guru from Rockhampton Mr Tom Wyatt coming as our special guest. Tom will share his garden knowledge in two presentations on Saturday and again on Sunday morning. Bring along your notebooks with all your garden questions and take advantage of Tom’s wonderful love of successful gardening.

There will be musical entertainment on both days by Wondai’s popular “Stepping Stones” group, headed by Geoff Grevel, a multidraw raffle and a beautiful Horticultural Show and Special Display, themed “Around the World in 80 Gardens”

Spring Garden Competition prizes will be presented after the Official Opening at 11am, and we are hoping for a nice representation of free gardens to visit, weather conditions permitting.

I hope you will be blessed with enough rain to build moisture and fill the water reserves in time for Spring plantings. Wise gardeners use the Winter months to re-work the landscaping, weed and mulch those bare areas, and make plans and lists for all those beautiful pants which will be just begging to be taken home! No doubt you will have plenty of inspirational ideas and a shopping wish list to get you started with your new gardening and decorator projects.

We really do need to encourage the populations of all beneficial insects, and there will be plenty of suitable plants to choose from including flowers, herbs and fruit trees. Self-suffiency is becoming more than ever the choice of keen gardeners, and is even more important these days as we become concerned about the quality and availability of fresh vegies and seasonal fruit.

Experienced stallholders will be ready to answer all your questions on how to make the best of their plants, and to show you products to keep your garden healthy and productive. Expect to find examples of the excellent organic soil improvers which will make your garden come alive with health and vigor, and tools and gadgets to make every job easier.

Take some quality time out to enjoy wine and cheese tasting, and explore the craft and gift stalls with their appealing arrays of lifestyle, collectors and decorating products which will give plenty of choice for early Christmas shopping.

Customers are advised to ensure that their bags are marked and tickets correctly filled in and to take care of the tickets they will be given from each plant stall because they will be needed for identification when collecting plant purchases. In addition, Bus travelers should make sure that their bags are marked with the Destination as well. MONDURE’S HANSENS GULLY BRIDGE Work on the replacement of Mondure’s Hansens Gully

Bridge will begin this month. South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Wayne

Kratzmann said contractor Construction Project Management had been engaged to start the bridge replacement on Mondure Road on 16 September 2015.

“The work will mean residents will have a bridge that will be able to carry heavier road limits than in recent times, and will be serviceable well into the future,” Mayor Kratzmann said.

The project includes the removal of the existing structure, construction of the new bridge, roadworks, signage, and line marking. It’s expected that the work will take approximately 28 weeks, weather permitting.

During construction, Mondure Road will be closed to all traffic, with alternate routes available and signage installed to assist with the detour.

“Council thanks residents for their patience, which will result in the use of a better bridge to meet their needs,” Mayor Kratzmann said.

The Goomeri Lions have been active since the last publication, a Bar B Q in the B G A car park to raise funds for Andrew Holden’s ride for Cancer appeal was undertaken, and several visitors enjoyed hospitality of the area. The Pumpkin Festival is our biggest activity of the year and this year was no exception, a few of our members were away travelling, which added extra pressure to those manning the Chip Van but we managed. We have attended Change Over Dinners for the Wondai, Proston and Murgon Clubs.

Goomeri held its Change Over Dinner at Wimberleys Cafe and past members Barbara Walthall and Jill and Greg Lennon were welcomed back for the evening. The new Mayor of the Gympie Regional Council also graced us with his attendance. The new President, replacing Bess Innes is Ken Sippel, most other positions were unchanged. Five new members have been welcomed into our club this year.

A list of fund distribution for the year is as follows. The Black Dog Institution $500.00 Trek 4 Kids $300.00Goomeri State School – awards night $400.00B P Fish Management Co $200.00Castra Retirement Home $100.00Goomeri Show Society $1548.00State School Naplan Breakfast $200.00Longreach Lions Drought Relief $2000.00Pumpkin Festival Com $500.00Supporting Chemo Therapy $200/00Lenard Elliott Fund $500.00Aust. The Chip Van was taken to Dusty Hill for the first of its market days, this is to be a monthly event for the future and we hope that it will develop into a big day. Last Sunday the Lions members treated themselves to a day out where we didn’t have to work, we travelled by bus to Maleney, to visit Barbara Walthall and Russell Seaars, a nice morning tea was ready when we arrived, after a couple of hours admiring the scenery from Barbaras house and surroundings, we went to the Maleney Hotel for lunch. We then travelled to Greg and Jill Lennons home for afternoon tea. A very pleasant day was enjoyed by all.

THE HISTORY OF DR ALLAN LAMBERTS VISITS TO MURGONIn 1981 after graduation from Chiropractic College in Melbourne I started work at the Sunshine Chiropractic

with Laurie and Linda Power in Nambour. At that time many patients travelled from Murgon region to Nambour for Chiropractic care and the local accountant Michael Francis 30 yrs ago asked me to consider coming to Murgon.

Being a country boy the opportunity was welcomed and in May 1984 I started what has become 31 years of providing Chiropractic care to Murgon and surrounding districts.

Initially during the 80’s I visited monthly and worked out of the Accountants Board room in Gore Street, then expanded and rented the office next door and made the trip weekly.

After a period of time I found the travel taxing so reduced to monthly again and moved to Gordon and Myrtle’s Stimpsons premises “Stimos” takeaway, initially in the back part of the store which was a renovated mechanics garage and later moved upstairs into the “shop area” before moving to the CWA Hall in late 90’s and have been there ever since.

I have always realised that to give better Chiropractic care that more than monthly is desired so it is with great pleasure that my son Ashley who works with me in Woombye is now able to come to Murgon monthly.

I will be coming over on the 2nd Friday each month and Ashley on the last Thursday each month – initially this year Ashley will not be doing November or December.

Appointments need to be made through our Woombye office ph 07 5442 2144 or mobile 0412 714228

FEDERAL FUNDING GUARANTEE PROVIDES CERTAINTY FOR WIDE BAY MEN’S SHEDS

Federal Member for Wide Bay and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss today said that Men’s Sheds in Wide Bay will have more opportunities to secure funding from the Federal Government.

“Round 11 of the National Shed Development Programme (NSDP) is currently open and Men’s Sheds in Wide Bay can apply for up to $8,000,” Mr Truss said.

Applications for funding under round 11 close on September 18. “Men’s Sheds in communities across Wide Bay play a very important role keeping men active and contributing to

their mental health and physical wellbeing. “To provide certainty, the Coalition Government has guaranteed funding for Men’s Sheds for a further three years,

through to 2019. “This funding allows Men’s Sheds to maintain their shed, buy new tools or start new projects. It’s great news for

Men’s Sheds in communities across Wide Bay and the men who use them.” The $4.5 million commitment will also assist the Australian Men’s Sheds Association to more effectively reach and

engage men. Mr Truss said Men’s Sheds help to combat social isolation, particularly amongst older men living in rural, regional and

remote areas. Applications for grants are assessed by the Australian Men’s Shed Association, in accordance with guidelines agreed

by the Department of Health. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis up to $8,000 (GST exclusive), with priority given to sheds in

disadvantaged areas.
