AROUND THE STATE 5 MUMBAI/STATE NAGPUR: Abdul Gani Turk, a 1993 Mumbai serial blasts convict lodged at the Nagpur Central Jail, died on Thursday, an official said. Turk, 68, was lodged in the Nagpur Central Jail since 2012. Convicted for planting a bomb at Century Bazar, one of the 12 sites devastated by serial blasts in the country's financial capital on March 12, 1993, Turk was serving life imprisonment after his death sentence was commuted. At least 257 people died in the blasts. Jail superintendent Rani Bhosle said that Turk was not keeping well for some time and was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on April 22. Later he was brought back and being treated at the prison hospital. District and special POCSO court judge S B Bahalkar on Wednesday pronounced the punishment to the accused, Shivmani Ramdulhar Jaiswar, who worked as a car- penter, and also imposed a fine of Rs 27,000 on him. According to the prosecution, the accused and the victim, then aged 10 years, were neighbours in the city's Manorama Nagar area and knew each other. On July 17, 2015, the accused went to the girl's house when she was alone and raped her. He threatened her with dire con- sequences if she revealed about the offence to anyone, the prosecution told the court. The girl later informed her mother, who lodged a police com- plaint following which the accused was arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 376(2)(i) (rape)and 506 (criminal intimidation), and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The judge, while pronouncing the sentence, held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt all the charges against the accused. Hailing from Maharashtra, Kulkarni aims to enlighten the younger generation and help them reconnect with their mother tongue. A postgraduate in Sanskrit, Kulkarni said that he started this expedition on July 1, 2018, and intends to complete it by 15 August this year. He told ANI, "I started this initiative to create awareness about one's mother tongue and put an emphasis on this in schools. One must read all languages, but they should learn their mother tongue first." Elderly man dies after police take his grandson into custody MUMBAI: A 70-year-old man died apparently due to shock after his minor grandson was taken into custody by police in connection with a stone pelting incident in Osmanabad, an official said on Thursday. Dattu Ganpati More died immediately after police apprehended his grandson from their house in Telmod village in Umarga taluka late on Wednesday night, the official said. More's grandson was held as part of the operation launched to catch those allegedly involved in pelting stones at a police vehicle, he added. "More's grandson and some other persons were found involved in hurling stones at a police vehicle over its alleged delay in reaching the spot of a car accident in which three people had died. The accident had taken place on Sunday," the official said. The stone-pelters had later escaped from the spot. The police had registered an offence against a group of at least 25 persons, including More's minor grandson. Man gets life sentence in bank loan fraud case THANE: A special court for CBI cases here has sentenced a 38-year-old man to life imprisonment for fraudulently obtaining loans of over Rs 2.80 crore from the Andhra Bank in 2008. Then manager of the bank's Ghodbunder branch in neighbouring Thane was awarded 10 years' jail term, while three others were sentenced to three years' imprisonment for conspiracy on Thursday. Besides awarding him life imprisonment, CBI Judge S R Tamboli also imposed a fine of Rs 3.13 crore on prime accused Rajendra Patil. Bandlamudi Mahipal, the former branch manager, was ordered to pay Rs 3.40 lakh. The accused were held guilty under IPC Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) as well as under the Prevention of Corruption Act. According to the prosecution, Patil approached Andhra Bank's Ghodbunder Road branch for a vehicle loan and a loan against property in 2008. - Agencies MUMBAI: The Chiley family who were featured in the rally of Raj Thackeray, the chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, are also featured on a page called Paksitan defence alleged Vinod Tawde, the education minister. The circular states that vehicular entry on both sides of the road between Tata Power building and fire station building at BKC will be temporarily restricted from Thursday midnight to Saturday midnight. On the same lines, the entry on BKC road from NABARD junction to UTI will be restricted, said a traffic police officer.
