2.0 Introduction

The term multimedia may not sound peculiar to most of us, as we use different aspects

of multimedia everyday, may be unwittingly. Multimedia is a combination of two or

more of the following elements text, image, sound, video and animations produced

using a computer or any digital method. Use of multimedia methods, can enhance the

interactivity and richness of the message we want to express.

Nowadays multimedia techniques are widely being used in the educational systems in

the western countries. As the psychologists and researchers say, the human mind can

effectively conceive and memorize most thoughts transferred into brain, if two or more

senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste) were used in the expression of the idea. So,

using multimedia applications in teaching children can result in satisfactory outcomes in

the long run, as it involves many types of media in one application.

The application described in this document is intended to create awareness about the

Dengue menace prevailing in the country among children. This uses many interactive

multimedia methods in delivering the idea to the viewer.

3.0 Objectives

This application mainly targets the children in the country, as according to my point of

view, in order to resolve and prevent any issue or a conflict that exists in the society we

should identify and take action to eradicate the root cause. Making awareness of such a

menace among children can lead to creating more educated citizens in the future.

In terms of this application, I have used an interactive approach in educating the

children about the ways to prevent Dengue from Sri Lanka.

4.0 Targeted users background

This application targets children mainly in Sri Lanka and other Asian countries who are

between the ages of 10 and 15.

All the characters and the environment presented in the plot may be quite familiar for

the children of lower and middle class because the story revolves around such a family

living in a small village. This method can affect the mindset of the target audience by

letting them feel like this is their own story.

5.0 Targeted Users Requirement

The user needs to be able to understand simple English used throughout the application

to navigate between menus and to respond user-input stages.

A bright color scheme is used to enhance the look and feel of the application and to keep

the target user attracted till the end.

Easy navigation methods are used to help the user navigate through the application. First

the user may have to enter their details such as their Name, Age, and Country into text

boxes. These inputs are used to personalize the application and generate custom results.

User can switch between different scenes by clicking on a Next or Select Scene

button at run time. Movie sound effects can be disabled by clicking on the Mute

Sounds button.

User can exit the application at anytime by clicking on the Exit button provided.

This application will be produced mainly using Adobe Flash CS3 and will be

compiled into an (exe) executable file.

7.0 Concepts art and character design

The story is woven around Sirimal who is one of the main characters, and his family.

The characters used in the application are explained as follows.

7.1 Main Characters

Denga

Denga is a Dengue mosquito and this is a main character of this application. Dengas

appearance gives the user a clear idea about its notoriety.

Sirimal

Sirimal, a boy of 12 becomes the victim of Denga, the mosquito, unless the user takes

action to prevent spreading of mosquitoes in the application.

8.0 Abstract

This project is an individual assignment handed over to DF093ICT for the module

Multimedia Applications. The project is to plan and implement a multimedia application

which carries a message to the audience.

This application is intended to create awareness about Dengue among children. This

application contains interactive activities to educate them on how it is spread, and what

need to be done as children in order to eradicate dengue from Sri Lanka.

This will also carry the message Prevention is better than cure at the end.

This application is created using Adobe Flash CS3 and uses Actionscript 2.0 for

scripting.

11.0 Creative and unique features of the application

11.1 Preloader

This application has a coded preloading stage to show the loading progress after user

launches it. The time takes to load this application depends on the configuration of the

users computer. If it is a low end machine the user may have to wait relatively a long

time than a user with a faster machine. By using such a preloader the user can be

entertained and keep him focused with the application rather than showing a blank

screen which appears when an ordinary Flash application/movie without a preloader,

loads.

11.2Sound Effects

Sound effects are used to mimic natural occurrences like thundering and flashing, to

make the movie more realistic to the viewer.

11.3 Background music

Background music mixed with mysterious and horrific atmosphere is used to express the

feeling to the viewer.

11.4 Pointer

A custom mouse pointer, designed to support the theme, is being used in this

application.

11.5 Visual Effects

Visual effects such as Depth-of-field are being used to focus on the main objects and

to make it more realistic.
