Message from President-Elect

Sonya C. Mau

Whenever any one asks me – “What’s MCLP?” I say, “The Multicultural Lead-ership Program is an intense 8-month leadership program to develop diverse lead-ers for McLean County.” While that’s our stated mission, I often add that “diverse perspectives lead to better solutions for our community.”

The ultimate goal in diverse thinking is to be able to hold two opposing ideas in your mind without judging either. Doing this often results in fresh insights, innovative choices and creative solutions. In our increasingly com-plex communities, diverse perspectives could be the competitive edge for any organization.

How does MCLP create leaders who can manage diverse perspectives to de-liver greater benefits to McLean County? It first asks individuals to under-stand themselves better and to test their own strengths, passions, and styles throughout the program. MCLP then focuses on the servant leadership concept: “true leaders seek first to serve.”

Community projects are major growth experiences. Teams of MCLP partici-pants complete community projects for non-profit organizations in McLean County. MCLP teams are selected because of their diverse styles. Team mem-bers learn how to work with diverse perspectives, build a close-knit team and provide a useful solution for a deserving organization.

Mentors play a key role by “holding up a mirror” to each participant. They help MCLP participants as they journey through the program to discover their leadership capabilities. Our mentors are truly servant-leaders for our participants!

MCLP is a great program for any community. We are fortunate that it started in McLean County. We are fortunate for the amazing sponsorship this pro-gram receives. Most of all, we are fortunate to celebrate the graduation of 25 diverse leaders who will build upon the legacy begun by our inaugural class of 2010. Congratulations to the Class of 2011!

Message from the Advisory Board Chair

Deanna L. Frautschi

When a young professional named Phani Aytam stopped by to see me al-most three years ago to talk about developing a new leadership program for McLean County, I was immediately engaged by his enthusiasm and the cur-riculum he had developed. The proposed Multicultural Leadership Program (MCLP), seemed like an idea whose time had come for McLean County.

Now in its second year of existence, this remarkable program continues to im-prove and to capture the attention of community citizens who also recognize its value. We need all the leadership talent available to make our community a better place. This program allows us to tap sources of potential leaders who were not included before – some because they simply weren’t asked and oth-ers because they didn’t know how to go about developing themselves further.

Participants learn so much about themselves and about business, education, government and the social service agenices in our community. They learn how to assess situations and problems and how to work with others to pro-vide effective leadership and solutions for the community, for their businesses and for their personal lives.

The MCLP Advisory Board is made up of 16 community leaders in organi-zations throughout the county who provide guidance and input to the pro-gram. They also reach out to help the community understand the value of this leadership program and to seek their support through engaging more participants and supplying financial support for it.

The Advisory Board is proud of the MCLP participants and the excellent work they have done this past year. Their group projects contributions have already helped several nonprofit organizations in the community. We are confident they will continue to serve many others as leaders in the future.

On behalf of the MCLP Advisory Board, I congratulate the Class of

2010 for their continued involvement and the Class of 2011 as they go forward to make a difference in their community.

Carol Reitan has been an active servant-leader in all aspects of our community for

all her adult life.

Some of her community involvement includes Executive Direction/CEO, Mid Central Community Action Inc.; co-founder of Collaborative Solutions Institute, Inc.; founder of Neville House, a shelter for domestic violence victims; and co-founder of Heartland Theatre Company. Carol helped start the Ecology Action Center and the YWCA Kid's Peace Camp. She recently helped form the Woman-to-Woman fund of the Ill. Prairie Community Foundation, supporting programs to improve life for women and children. She is active on the Green Team (for energy/sustainability is-sues) at Westminster Village where she and her husband live. In politics, Carol Reitan was Mayor of Normal from 1972 to 1976. At that time she was one of only 30 women mayors in the United States for cit-ies over 25,000. Carol insisted the Council follow the State of Illinois Open Meeting Law, then recently passed, to ensure that all political decisions took place in public meetings. It was a major change in Normal. She has been a member of the Normal and Regional Planning Com-missions, Candidate for State Senate, active in the League of Women Vot-ers for 46 years, MCLP Mentor, and many more. Carol Reitan has been recognized for many accomplishments, but her focus is to serve by leading efforts to change our community for the better.
