Wirsbo MultiCor TubingWirsbo MultiCor Tubing is multi-layered composite tubing consisting of an aluminum tubing sandwichedbetween inner and outer layers of PEX. Layers are bonded to the aluminum by a special adhesive.MultiCor offers 100% oxygen diffusion, protects against corrosion and can be embedded in concrete andcan be installed in walls, floors or ceilings. The flexibility of MultiCor tubing results in easy rollouts. Thestay-in-place rigid feature of the tubing is ideal for hydronic baseboard and radiator connections.

Wirsbo MultiCor tubing utilizes the MultiCor Fitting assemblies to connect to Wirsbo’s complete line ofheating manifolds and compression fittings.

Corrodible or ferrous components may be used in a closed loop hot water system with Wirsbo MultiCortubing.

Wirsbo MultiCor tubing is rated at 125 psi @ 180 ºF and at 100 psi @ 200 ºF . These temperature andpressure ratings are issued by the Hydrostatic Design Stress Board of the Plastic Pipe Institute (PPI). PPIis a division of the Society of Plastics Industry (SPI).

Working with Wirsbo MultiCor TubingMultiCor tubing is ideal for radiant slab installations. The coils can be rolled out directly from the box, ora Wirsbo Uncoiler can be used to facilitate easy unrolling.

Cutting MultiCorWirsbo MultiCor tubing should be square cut perpendicular to the length of the tube with a suitablecutting tool. Be sure to remove excess material or burrs that might affect the fitting connection.

BendingMultiCor tubing can be bent by hand or with a bending spring. Bend supports are not necessary sinceMultiCor maintains its shape. The following chart outlines the minimum bending radius of the MultiCortubing.

Bending By HandHold tubing with a distance of 15-18" from the bending point and bend to required radius.

Using a Bending Spring (³⁄₄" (E6160750) & 1" (E6161000)1. Bevel the tubing end.2. Insert almost the entire bending spring leaving only about 1" sticking out of the tubing.3. Carefully bend the tubing to required radius following the minimum bending radius guidelines

shown in chart above.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT bend tubing to the point that the spring ribs become visible through theouter jacket of the tubing.

CAUTION: If the tubing is damaged or kinked during installation, use a Wirsbo coupling to repair.Wrap the coupling with a small piece of insulation or shrink sleeve and make a note of its location. (Seeinstructions on Page 6)

Storing and HandlingStore Wirsbo MultiCor in its carton under cover to avoid dirt accumulation and extended exposure todirect sunlight. Never install tubing that has been exposed for more than 30 days.

Installing In Wood Framed ConstructionProtecting Exposed TubingInstalled tubing should be protected from possible damage. A tubing run indanger of being pierced by drywall, paneling, trim screws or nails, etc. duringconstruction should be safeguarded with suitable steel plate protectors.

NOTE: Multicor tubing passing through hollow masonry walls or metal studsmust be protected with suitable sleeves or grommets.

Tubing Runs1. Leave extra tubing at the beginning and end of runs to simplify connection to manifolds and

fittings. Immediate connection to the manifold and fittings simplifies installation.2. Clearly mark each run with permanent marker to identify it as supply or return.3. Tubing installed within or under concrete slabs should be in continuous lengths (no splices).4. Consult local building codes for information on where and how to drill through load bearing

construction.

Pipe Supports1. Plastic tubing supports are recommended. Metal tubing supports designed for use

with plastic tubing may be used.2. Do not use supports that will damage the tubing. Inspect metal supports for sharp edges. 3. The linear expansion rate for MultiCor is approximately 0.156" per 10° F temperature

change for every 100 feet of tubing.4. MultiCor tubing should not be rigidly anchored with supports, but instead allowed freedom of

movement to expand and contract.5. Allow adequate clearance between MultiCor tubing and the structure (bored holes or sleeves) to

allow freedom of movement due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Pipe Support SpacingMultiCor must be anchored securely enough to support the tubing, yet relaxed enough to allow thetubing to expand and contract.1. For spacing recommendations, please use the following chart as a guide:2. Along vertical runs, install supports every 4' to 5' at each floor and mid-story guide.

Installing MultiCor In Or Below The Slab1. Secure tubing using Wirsbo wire ties at the intervals necessary to keep the tubing from excessive

movement during the pour.2. When entering or exiting the slab, PVC elbows may be helpful, but are not required, to ensure tubing

placement when it exits the slab. In a 4" pour, the elbows will also protect the tubing from abrasion.

3. Maintain pressure on tubing installed in slab during the pour to facilitate leak detection.4. Tubing that will be exposed to ultraviolet light for more than 30 days must be sleeved to protect

against UV damage.

NOTES:• At the entry and exit points of the slab, we recommend two to three feet of the tubing be covered

with a suitable poly sleeve to prevent dirt and debris from entering the system.• If the tubing must be run through an expansion joint, it must be sleeved or dipped below the joint.

CAUTION: If the tubing is damaged or kinked during installation, use a Wirsbo coupling to repair.Wrap the coupling with a small piece of insulation or shrink sleeve and make a note of its location. (Seeinstructions on Page 6)

MultiCor System Sizing

MultiCor Tubing can be used in lieu of copper or steel piping in traditional hydronic heating systems. When combined with Wirsbo’s complete line of heating components, MultiCor is ideal for the followingapplications:

• Radiant Floor Heating• Baseboard and Radiator Connections• Manifold Supply Piping• Fan Coils and Chillers• Snow and Ice Melting Systems• Solar Systems

Baseboard System Sizing ChartsThe following chart will help in choosing the proper tubing size and circulator size. ¹⁄₂" or ⁵⁄₈" tubing isrecommended for an efficient system design and installation. ³⁄₄" Tubing calculations are also listed fordesigns requiring higher flow rates.

SECTION VI

Baseboard System Sizing Charts (continued)Column A: Total BTU/h load of zone or loopColumn B: Required flow (GPM) through zone or loopColumn C: Pressure drop through baseboard element (3/4" copper) needed to deliver required Btu’sColumn D: Pressure drop through tubing (max length recommended) and elementsColumn E: Feet of baseboard required based on 550 BTU/h per foot

To find a specific flow rate and pressure loss for a specific MultiCorapplication, use the following steps:

1. Determine the amount of BTU/h required to heat a specific zone or loop.2. Determine the GPM flow rate required to

supply the BTU/h to that zone using the following formula:

3. Locate the proper pressure drop chart (pages 10 to 12) for tubing size and Water/Glycolconcentration.

4. Find the GPM in the gray column of the pressure loss tables.5. Cross the required GPM with the appropriate water temperature for the design to determine the

pressure drop in feet for one (1) foot of pipe.6. Multiply that number by the total length of Wirsbo MultiCor tubing in the loop or zone. 7. Add the total pressure drop through the MultiCor tubing to the pressure drop through the baseboard

elements. Chart A may be used as a guide for ¹⁄₂" Baseboard.8. If zoning with circulators, size the circulator to the appropriate GPM and Head requirement for each

zone.9. If zoning with zone valves and a single circulator, size the circulator for the total system GPM and the

worst-case zone pressure drop.

Note: The procedure listed above may also be used for sizing distribution piping for applications suchas fan coils, radiators and manifold supplies. Simply add the pressure drop acquired throughStep 6 to the units manufacturer’s published pressure drop in step 7. You can then proceed withsteps 8 or 9 for circulator sizing.

It should be noted that even though most fin-tube baseboard has ³⁄₄" element inside, it is typically notnecessary to use ³⁄₄" MultiCor tubing to pipe these systems. A careful review or required flow rates andpressure losses will indicate that in many cases, ¹⁄₂" Wirsbo MultiCor may be used with excellent results. In cases where ¹⁄₂" MultiCor cannot deliver adequate flow, ⁵⁄₈" Wirsbo MultiCor can be used. Thedetermining factor will be the total load, pressure loss and total length of tubing in the zone.

The relative flexibility and installation ease of Wirsbo MultiCor tubing may be used to offer room byroom zoning in residential applications, in either new construction or retrofits. Individual supply andreturn lines may be run to each room and then connected to baseboard, panel type radiators or cast ironradiators. In the mechanical room, these lines may be tied into a Wirsbo manifold, with telestats andthermostats providing individual zone control.

Other zoning options include zone valves, circulators, or thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s). TRV’s aremounted in each room in conjunction with the specific radiation installed for local zone control. Whenusing TRV’s, continuous system pump circulation is recommended with a pressure differential valveinstalled between the supply and return manifolds. Continuous circulation provides heat on demandwhen a TRV opens, while the pressure differential valve prevents "dead-heading" of the circulator whenall zones are satisfied.

¹⁄₂" Wirsbo MultiCor tubing should provide ample flow rates with minimal friction loss for theseindividual zones. Refer to chart A for specific pipe sizing and circulator sizing information. ¹⁄₂" WirsboMultiCor provides the added advantage of a low cost, easily installed system.

Room by room zoning is perfect for retrofit and remodel applications, especially when electric baseboardis being replaced with hydronic baseboard. Since MultiCor is flexible tubing, the piping may be run in acramped, hard to reach area with minimal damage to the existing structure. In addition, the lack of solderjoints in those hard to reach areas reduces the likelihood of torch damage and potential leaks atconcealed fittings.
