ACCURATE – DYNAMIC – EFFICIENTAltitude simulation for R&D

The topic of Real Driving Emissions (RDE) is becoming more and more impor tant. Accurate testing is essential to ensure internal combustion engines meet global emission and modern performance standards under various altitudes during real driving conditions. Until now, altitude chambers have been used for this testing, but cost, flexibility, accuracy, and energy consumption have always been a concern.

A unique tool, the MEDAS altitude simulator, has been designed specifically to address these concerns. This mobile solution meets all of today’s and future market demands. It is extremely dynamic, highly accurate, and offers simulation options for Road-to-Rig and test cell level verification for RDE-related topics. By implementing new statutory requirements into the development process, the process can be drastically shortened, leading to time-savings. MEDAS can be utilized for engine intake and exhaust pressure, as well as temperature conditioning for engine and power train cells. It is also useful for chassis dynamometer applications covering steady state and dynamic engine operation conditions.

Stay up-to-date on RDE, Rig-to-Rig and Road-to-Rig correlation as well as validation / verifi cation / fuel  effi  ciency. MEDAS has been developed using effi  cient energy consumption technology, which is powered via electric motor driven chargers and compressors. They work with ultra-high-speed components to  generate the required intake air and exhaust conditions to the engine in time with highest accuracy. This eliminates the need for huge media storage buff er as has been required in the past.

Due to this technical approach MEDAS is ahead of traditional equipment and achieves a high level of energy effi  ciency based on its function principle. The tubing of electrical motor with ultra-high-speed charger  components,  waste gate and fl aps is controlled via MEDAS processor which allows alternate vacuum and pressurized operation.

MEDAS is your aff ordable engine conditioning system that covers real altitude conditions.

SIMULATE NATURE DRIVEN TEMPERATURE EFFECTS BY VACUUM / PRESSURE CAPABILITY

In the application fi eld of combustion related engine mapping, internal parameters like intake air and exhaust pressure are  signifi cantly impor tant for fuel economy and emission reduction, as well as engine performance.

Eff ective for uphill and downhill simulation, MEDAS is an essential tool for global R&D and day-to-day correlation tasks on diff erent altitude levels in respect of altitude correlating temperatures as well.

FLEXIBLE FOR STEADY STATE AND DYNAMIC APPLICATION

If you are dealing with RDE development targets, MEDAS off ers you simulation of altitude or ambient  conditions under desired temperature, humidity and pressure. Correlation of pressure and mass fl ow at engine intake and exhaust ensures exact conditions at your engine under test.

New legislation requires automotive manufacturers to test their vehicles at defi ned and varying altitudes to refl ect actual driving conditions. Two additional options are available to ensure compliance with the new standards: the MEDAS Temperature Module (MTM) and the MEDAS Humidity Module (MHM). These additional modules allow tests to be carried out in a temperature range of -15 to 40 °C at altitudes up to 5,000 meters above sea level and respective humidity from 10 to 80 % as a standard.

The functional extensions enable simulations within a wider range of ambient pressure, temperature and humidity at the engine intake and exhaust, which means that various tests (such as performance, emission or durability testing) can be carried out on an engine operating in any ambient condition and in any test cell.

MEDAS TEMPERATURE MODULE

The MEDAS Temperature Module (MTM) is a complementary option for the MEDAS altitude simulator. The MTM  extends the temperature range available for altitude testing. This makes it possible to simulate any temperature between -15 and 40 °C, at altitudes ranging from sea level to 5,000 m above sea level independently of the location and also under dynamic operation.

MEDAS HUMIDITY MODULE

THE MEDAS Humidity Module (MHM) is an extension module for humidity control that operates in connection with MEDAS and the MTM. The MHM allows engine intake humidity to be controlled within the range of 10 to 80 % at any given altitude and temperature.
