Briones – Meridian BALOO Training

Date/Time: Saturday, April 21st, 2018 - Sunday, April 22nd, 2018

Location: Camp Herms; 1100 James Place - El Cerrito

This newly expanded 1 ½ Day BALOO Training Course uses an overnight campout format full of fun and learning to prepare Pack leaders to plan and carry out Cub-appropriate outdoor experiences. The training starts at 8:30am on Saturday and finishes at 11am on Sunday.

Why Should I Attend?: To have fun in a beautiful outdoor setting, of course, but also to ensure that your Pack has at least one (preferably two or more) BALOO-trained adults to help plan and carry out Cub Scout camp outs! AT LEAST ONE BALOO-TRAINED LEADER IS A REQUIREMENT FOR ANY PACK OVERNIGHT EVENT. The BALOO training sessions include hands-on demonstration of the why and how of Cub Scout camping — planning, equipment, fire safety, stoves, and lanterns, first aid and sanitation, nature hikes and games, meal preparation, overnight campsite setup and selection, and an evening campfire program.

The key point of BALOO training is “Keep It Simple.” Remember, the overnight is an entry-level outdoor experience for the first-time Cub Scout camper. All arrangements — sleeping, cooking, and program — should be geared to Cub Scout-age boys.

Where: BSA Camp Herms in the El Cerrito Hills (near Arlington Park) 1100 James Place at Thors Bay Road

Driving directions: Exit I-80 at Potrero Avenue East approximately 1 mile to Arlington Boulevard. Head South approximately ½ mile to Thors Bay Road.

Cost: $45.00 for Registration by April 7 ($55.00 after April 7)

Includes great food (continental breakfast, lunch, dinner, cracker barrel Saturday, and full breakfast Sunday, overnight camping, handouts, and certification card!

REGISTRATION IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 36 PARTICIPANTS.

Your confirmation letter will include a list of suggested items to bring, what to wear, and a reminder to borrow anything you don’t have so you can “try before you buy”-learn from the experts at the training.

Questions? Contact Course Director Paul Shimotake, [email protected], 925-285-3764

Advance Registration must be received by April 7 for the $45 price ($55 after April 7).

This course is limited to the first 36 participants and is routinely sold out, so please register early to secure your space.

HIGH ADVENTURE TEAM PRESENTS:

CANOEING AWARENESS and PADDLECRAFT SAFETY

Wish you could provide your unit a new adventure? Something a little wild, something a little mild something a little too much fun???

TRY PADDLING!!!

This course provides the basics in planning and canoe handling for the novice or the experienced paddler enthusiast. The course covers how to plan in detail a safe event for your unit on the water, including such adventures as the Northern Tier, Boundary Waters, Lower Grand Canyon or local waters such as the American, the Russian or the Sacramento Rivers. NEVER PADDLED BEFORE??? Fear not, we can get you down the river with confidence based upon the skills developed at our outdoor session. We begin with flatwater basic canoe control. In the afternoon me move to coordinated maneuvers between bow and stern paddlers. Safety and rescue are included in the event of a spill. River reading –the sense of how the river will move downstream giving you clues on where you should-or should not-be with the canoe will be highlighted. Evening session close the day with immersion hypothermia, shuttle logistics and paddling demonstration videos. RIVER FUN-On Sunday we relocate from flat water to moving water along the American River. We begin by experimenting with eddy turns and ferries. Once we have these under our belt, we move downriver and play along the river catching each feature we can. Importantly, we practice how to rescue a paddler who has fallen out of his boat. We conclude the event with scouting the San Juan Rapid and running it with confidence. If you wish, you can run it again and again. Indoor: May 9th from 7-10PM at the Council Office Outdoor: June 9-10 at Folsom Lake SRA . Indoor: June 13th from 7-10PM at the Council office Indoor (optional Paddlecraft safety) June TBD from 7-10PM a the Council office Cost: $125. What is Cub Scout STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The STEM initiative was begun back in 2010 as an effort by the Boy Scouts of America to enhance interest in STEM fields. What is a Nova Award? The Nova Awards are a stepping-stone to the Supernova Awards. They integrate many of the existing advancements and include other related activities. At present, there are seven Nova awards for Cub Scouts-Science Everywhere, Down and Dirty, Nova WILD!, Out of This World, Tech Talk, 1-2-3 Go!, and Swing! The Nova awards take the form of a patch that can be worn on the right-hand pocket with additional pins for every subsequent award. What is a Supernova Award? The Supernova awards build from the Nova awards. They seek to challenge the youth who have a greater interest in STEM fields to experiment, understand the outcomes of the experiments, and present their findings. There are two levels of Supernova for Cub Scouts-the Dr. Luis W. Alvarez medal for Cub Scouts and the Dr. Charles H. Townes medal for Webelos. Who can earn a Nova Award? Nova awards can be earned by Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts and all Webelos Scouts. Unfortunately, the National Council has made no provision for either Lions or Tigers to earn Nova Awards. Why earn a Nova Award or Supernova Award? The country is in need of the next generation of inventors, scientists, engineers, mathematicians, and technologists and the Boy Scouts of America is trying to do its part in developing that next generation. Right now, many of the merit badges the Scouts earn do relate to STEM. The Nova and Supernova awards are additional recognition for interest and effort the Scouts already demonstrate in the STEM fields. Who helps the Cub Scout complete the STEM Awards? There are two levels of guidance--one for the Nova Awards and one for the Supernova Awards. For the Nova Awards, the Cub Scout or Webelos works with a Counselor. For the Supernova Awards, the Cub Scout or Webelos works with a Mentor. Who can become a Nova Counselor? Any adult leader can become a Nova Counselor. The adult needs to complete Youth Protection and complete an Adult Application using leadership code "58." The only other requirement is that the leader has an interest and some understanding of the STEM topics. The leader should be able to guide the Scout over several weeks. Who can become a Supernova Mentor? Typically, the Supernova Mentor is someone that is an expert in STEM topics and is capable of guiding the Scout over several months. They also must complete Youth Protection Training and complete an Adult Application. In this case, the leader uses leadership code "52." The Supernova Mentor must also complete an additional Supernova Mentor application and be approved by the Council or District STEM committee. The Supernova Mentor application is very similar to the Merit Badge Counselor Application for Boy Scouts.

Where can I find out more about the Nova Awards and Supernova Awards? The National Boy Scouts of America website has additional information at http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards/BoyScouts.aspx Are there any pre-requisites that Scouts need to complete prior to the upcoming 1-2-3 GO! Nova Award event on Saturday, February 24th, 2018? Yes, for the 1-2-3 GO! Nova award, the Cub Scouts or Webelos need to have completed their watching or reading requirements (#1) and their Adventure requirements (#2). The Cub Scouts or Webelos need to watch or read (or any combination thereof) about one hour on mathematics or physics then make a list of two questions that they will discuss with the Counselor. For Wolf Scouts, they must complete the Code of the Wolf Adventure. For Bear Scouts, they must complete the Robotics Adventure. For Webelos, they must complete the Game Design Adventure. All the Scouts will discuss the kind of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics used in their adventure. What is provided at the upcoming event? There will be Nova Counselors to guide the Scouts in completing the 1-2-3 GO! Nova Award. All the supplies necessary to complete requirements #3-5 of the Nova Award will be provided. At the end of the session, a Scout completing all the requirements will receive their Nova Award patch or pin. What will we be doing? What is the cost of the event? The event costs $10 and covers the Nova Award patch or pin and all the materials for the experiments. How do Scouts register for the event? Registration will be online through the Council website and will open January 8, 2017. For any questions, please contact Michael McDowell at [email protected] or Praveen Nori at [email protected].

What is Boy Scout STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The STEM initiative was begun back in 2010 as an effort by the Boy Scouts of America to enhance interest in STEM fields. What is a Nova Award? The Nova Awards are a stepping-stone to the Supernova Awards. They integrate many of the existing advancements and include other related activities. At present, there are five Nova awards-Shoot!, Let It Grow!, Start Your Engines, Whoosh!, and Designed to Crunch, but there are more on the way. There are two levels of Supernova in Boy Scouts-the Dr. Bernard Harris medal (Bronze) and the Thomas Alva Edison medal (Silver). There is a Gold medal, the Dr. Albert Einstein, the Scouts can work towards as a Venturer. How do the Nova Awards and Supernova Awards compare to other Boy Scout Awards? As was mentioned, the Nova Awards are a stepping-stone to the Supernova Awards. The Supernova Awards are very much akin to the Hornaday Medals that Scouts may earn for significant efforts in conservation. Who helps the Boy Scout complete the STEM Awards? There are two levels of guidance--one for the Nova Awards and one for the Supernova Awards. For the Nova Awards, the Scout works with a Counselor. complete an additional Supernova Mentor application and be approved by the Council or District STEM committee. The Supernova Mentor application is very similar to the Merit Badge Counselor Application. Where can I find out more about the Nova Awards and Supernova Awards? The National Boy Scouts of America website has additional information at http://www.scouting.org/stem/Awards/BoyScouts.aspx Are there any pre-requisites that Scouts need to complete prior to the upcoming March Nova Award event? Yes, for the Whoosh! Nova award, the Scouts need to have earned any one of the following merit badges—Archery, Aviation, Composite Materials, Drafting, Electronics, Engineering, Inventing, Mining in Society, Model Design and Building, Railroading, Rifle Shooting, Robotics, or Shotgun Shooting. (If they have already earned a Nova Award, the merit badge must be different from the one already used for the previous Nova Award.) The Scouts will also have watched or read for 3 hours educational materials on motion or motion-inspired technology. (In a previous incarnation of this event, we spent three hours watching videos, but the Scouts got bored so we are going to have them do this on their own. We can provide suggestions for possible videos, if needed.) In addition to watching or reading about transportation or transportation technology, the Scouts must come up with a list of 5 questions for each item worked on that they will then discuss with the Nova Counselors. The Scouts also need to be prepared to discuss the engineering used in the merit badge earned (Requirement #3). What is provided at the upcoming event? There will be Nova Counselors to guide the Scouts in completing the Whoosh! Nova Award. At the end the session, a Scout completing all the requirements will receive their Nova Award patch or pin. What will we be doing? The Scouts will visit a local playground to see the simple machines in action then design their own piece of playground equipment, amusement park ride or method of transportation. Along the way there will be discussions with their Nova Counselor about the videos or reading they did, about the merit badge they earned, about the simple machines that we use in everyday life, and about how engineering affects their everyday life. What is the cost of the event? The event costs $15 and covers the Nova Award patch or pin, light refreshments, and all the materials for the award. How do Scouts register for the event? Registration will be online through the Council website and will open January 8, 2018. Registration is limited to the first 40 Scouts. For any questions, please contact Michael McDowell at mailto:[email protected].
