You will have to have 4 source flashcards by the end of the three library sessions and it will count as a quiz grade.

In your flashcards:

- book title/website etc.

- author, page number, publisher and year (you need those!!)

- facts, numbers, figures…any research on the card that will help you write your paper. You can use both

The Writing Process

Research Paper Writing: Outline and Introductory Paragraph with a

Working Thesis Statement

Page 29: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

What is an outline? What is an outline?

• An outline is a part of the writing process called “Pre-Writing.”

• It is a list that outlines all of the information that you would like to include in your paper.

• The list helps you to put all of your information in order before you begin writing.

Page 30: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

An Outline Organizes The Major An Outline Organizes The Major Parts Of Your Essay:Parts Of Your Essay:

• Thesis Statement- tells your reader your point and what they should expect.

• Major Points- facts you use to prove your main point. • Supporting Details- examples, facts, quotations that

further explain each point. • Transitions-The statement you use to transition form one

major point to the next. This stops your paper from sounding jumpy or disorganized.

• Concluding Thoughts- Any thoughts you would like to include at the close of your paper. NEVER INCLUDE NEW FACTS OR INFORMATION IN YOUR CONCLUSION!

Page 31: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

Where do I start?

• Gather all of your research or notes on the topic that you are writing about.

• Review it all and decide what your research/information is telling you about your topic.

• Form a working thesis statement that describes the point that you want to make about your topic.

• Begin to select what information you would like to include in your essay based on what proves your point.

Page 32: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

• Thesis Statement – 1st major point – 2nd major point – 3rd major point (etc.)

• 1st major point – Supporting details (3-5)

• Transition • 2nd major point

– Supporting details (3-5) • Transition • 3rd major point

Introductory Paragraph: Two Main Components

• First: You must introduce your paper on a broad scale in the first few sentences. For example, you may use an anecdote (story) or an intriguing statistic to engage your reader.

• Second: You must transition from your broad anecdote (story) or statistic to a more precise statement that provides a blueprint for your entire research paper— your paper’s working thesis statement!

Page 34: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

Introduction: What is the tone of this paragraph?

Writing with a controversial topic often takes the form of persuasion, i.e. convincing others that you have an interesting, logical point of view on the subject you are studying. Persuasion is a skill you practice regularly in your daily life. You persuade your siblings to clean up, your parents to let you borrow the car, your friend to vote for your favorite candidate or policy. With research paper writing, you often have to make a persuasive case in writing. You are asked to convince your reader of your point of view using accredited research. This form of persuasion, often called academic argument, follows a predictable pattern in writing. After a brief introduction of your topic, you state your point of view on the topic directly and often in one sentence (sometimes two). This sentence is the thesis statement, and it serves as a summary of the argument you'll make in the rest of your paper.

Page 35: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

What is a thesis statement?• A thesis statement:• is usually a single sentence somewhere in your first paragraph that

presents your argument to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the reason of your interpretation.

• tells the reader how you will interpret the importance of the subject matter under discussion— i.e., your research topic.

• is a road map/blueprint for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the paper.

• directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself.

• For this inquiry-based research paper, your assignment asks you to take a position or develop a claim about a subject; you may need to convey that position or claim in a thesis statement near the beginning of your draft. When an assignment, such as this one, asks you to analyze, to interpret, to compare and contrast, to demonstrate cause and effect, or to take a stand on an issue, it is likely that you are being asked to develop a thesis and to support it persuasively.

Page 36: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

Your Introduction

Visual Reference Engage your reader here. Provide a brief anecdote or an interesting statistic from your research that will catch the reader’s attention.

Your thesis statement should be the last sentence or last two sentences of your introductory paragraph. This is the “blueprint” for your body paragraphs.

Smoothly transition between introductory data/anecdote and thesis statement.

Sample Introductory Paragraph #1

Guiding Question: Is affirmative action still necessary in today’s American work force?

Every day people go to work to earn money in order to take care of themselves. Every day there are man different kinds of people doing different kinds of work. However, is the work force really diverse? Is there really equal pay among women and men doing the same job? Do individuals of different races and ethnic backgrounds really get fair and equal treatment and opportunity? Perhaps, the laws created to provide that equal treatment and opportunity is discriminating against the majority? Is affirmative action still needed in today’s work force? This issue of affirmative action is a very controversial issue among people of all races and backgrounds. Affirmative action creates debate from many different sides; however, affirmative action in the work force has evidence to support itself. Affirmative action is working in America’s employment system, and it is still necessary in order to provide equal opportunity and employment treatment to American’s diverse minority population.

Sample opener for essay

• It is amazing how many languages one hears while visiting a big city. Your hearing is not only overwhelmed by the constant surrounding noise, the strain to hear and understand when someone is giving you directions, but it also picks up the many different languages and dialects spoken around you. Language not only highlights and defines a geographic area but also the culture of that particular area. You are seeing so many new places, faces, and your hearing is in the same situation. You immerse yourself in the culture by eating the food, buying the traditional souvenirs, sightseeing and participating in local activities. You wish you understood the language and try to listen to the dialogue exchanged between the people who live there. For once English is not the dominant language. You are now considered the immigrant; what do you do?

Sample Introductory Paragraph #2Guiding Questions: Are tobacco companies to blame for the popularity of tobacco

use and the ignorance of American citizens?

Tobacco is an important part of the American economy (White 4). The tobacco company’s product is on of the many products that cause harm when not used moderately (State 2005). The health risk of this product was formally and publicly announced the U.S. Surgeon General in 1964 (McMillen 10). Many attempts have been made since that form announcement. While it seems as if many efforts have been made to stop tobacco use, it continues to be ignored by society, by the United States government, and especially by the big tobacco companies. The influence of tobacco companies and their advertisements create a fog that inhibits American citizens from understanding that tobacco is a direct harm to one’s health. People in general ignore the problems caused by tobacco use, but it is the big tobacco companies failure to make that harm factor obvious in their ads that continues to spread the ignorance concerning tobacco use even more in American society. Tobacco companies need to be held more responsible for their advertisement strategies, because the tobacco companies continue to advertise tobacco as a good thing.

• You must include a working thesis statement in your introductory paragraph.

• Underline the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph before submitting it to me.

• All introductions, with thesis statements, are due to me at the end of class, today.

• Remember, this is only a rough draft; this isn’t set in stone!

BrainstormingBrainstorming provides a nearly guaranteed solution to writer's block.

1) Begin with a blank piece of paper

2) Write your paper's topic, such as "The Ethics of Cigarette Advertising," at the top.

3) Write down everything you can about the topic; omit nothing, no matter how bizarre, and don't stop until you are completely out of ideas. Don't worry about grammar or editing.

Paper Topic: The Ethics of Cigarette Advertising

a) Cigarettes & cancer

b) Cigarette ads not on TV

c) Teenagers & cigarettes

d) Government subsidizes tobacco farmers

e) Camel "Hard Pack?"

f) Anti-smoking groups

g) Surgeon General's warnings

h) Why don't we see pipe and cigar ads?

i) Nicotine is addictive

j) Cigarettes still very popular

Page 46: MUG shots Do you know wear the longest rode on Earth can be found. Rules: Using the right word, end punctuation (question mark)

Brainstorming continued4) Look at the list above, and reconsider the paper's topic. Ideas (d) and (i) stray from the topic, so cut them.

5) Organize the remaining points. Idea (a) provides a decent place to start a draft, since it states a central truth about smoking.

6) Next, try to logically arrange the other points in the order that you would use in your essay. It helps to think about patterns into which ideas would fall, such as "Appeal of Ads," "Limits on Ads," "Future of Ads." You could write down these categories and then categorize your ideas from the brainstorming list. You'll end up with a working "outline" for the paper.

7) New ideas may occur to you as you organize the material. That's okay as long as these ideas relate to the topic.

8) You're almost ready to begin a draft, or at least an introductory paragraph.
