We welcome you to make our home, your home

People tell us they feel at home in our towns and villages - they like visiting the Mudgee Region because it’s ‘hype free’. It’s a real community with heart and soul, where people are friendly and they make others welcome.

Just over three hours drive from Sydney, or four from Newcastle, the region is a peaceful retreat with plenty to offer – fine wines, quality accommodation, spectacular scenery, a four-season climate and warm, hospitable service. Locals love where they live, and they welcome you to share its natural abundance and beauty.

Yamma Dummarung (hello & welcome)

The Mudgee region is part of Wiradjuri country. The Wiradjuri language group is the largest in New South Wales, and covers much of the state.

Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve is rich in Aboriginal heritage, as is Dunns Swamp where hand stencils can be seen in a small overhang within the camping area.

The Wiradjuri people used the rock shelters at Dunns Swamp as well as the range of food provided by a number of habitats, for countless generations.

Includes the historic towns of Gulgong,

Kandos, Mudgee and Rylstone.

Mudgee

The township Mudgee was first reached by white man in 1821 by William Lawson and first settled in 1822 by George and Henry Cox. Described by the National Trust as ‘one of the finest groups of townscape in a country area’, early Australian architectural facades and historic buildings line the wide streets of Mudgee, many dating to the 1850s. Today boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants, markets and a vibrant arts community give the town an edge, and ambiance which the locals revere and visitors covet.

Indulge your senses in the region - enjoy wine, honey, visit museums, go bushwalking or birdwatching, cycle, go gold panning, visit markets, galleries, antique shops, a miniature railway, a boutique brewery or star gaze at the observatory. Whatever you choose our attractions are ‘in every sense perfection’.

The professional staff at the Mudgee Visitor Information Centre know all the hidden secrets of the Region and are keen to share them with visitors. While you’re there, pick up some local produce and learn more about what makes our Region a great place to visit again and again. 84 Market Street, Mudgee. Opposite Robertson Park.

• Visit cellar doors – With more than 40 Cellar doors, a brewery and distillery.

• Try local produce – Farmers’ Markets, farm gate tours, and tastings of olive oil, cheese, and other locally grown product.

• See local art at our galleries or learn more about the history of the region at our museums.

• Take a walk – with stunning heritage buildings, and fantastic shopping all within a few blocks, there’s plenty to do without leaving our main streets.

Although the Rouses were early settlers, establishing Guntawang in 1822, it wasn’t until 1870 when Tom Saunders discovered gold on Red Hill that Gulgong truly flourished with an estimated 20,000 people flocking to the area.

Gulgong has changed little since these times. The first thing you’ll notice is the narrow streets which reflect the location of the original tent lines. Henry Lawson spent his early days in the area and his love of the arts still lives in the area.

Discover the Secret Language of the road. During the Great Depression and in gold rush times, people travelling country roads in search of work, food or just a place to sleep the night, used a secret code of symbols to communicate the ‘lie of the land’ to fellow travellers. This secret language was used internationally – by the tramps and gypsies of Europe to the hobos of America and the swaggies of Australia. It would also have been known to Henry Lawson and his mates who sought their fortune on the road.

Discover the Secret Language of the road. This secret language was used internationally – by the tramps and gypsies of Europe to the hobos of America and the swaggies of Australia. It would also have been known to Henry Lawson and his mates who sought their fortune on the road.

• Visit the Pioneer Museum - Housing an astonishing array of Australiana and a collection of sight and sound history, machinery and just about everything else, you could spend a day here.

• Visit the Prince of Wales Opera House - where Nellie Melba once sang and Les Darcy last fought. This building is reputed to be the largest bark structure ever built and is still a well used performance space.

• Visit the Henry Lawson Centre - There are paintings, prints, books, photos and cuttings, relating to the author, and to many parts of the region to which he vividly refers in his stories and poems. Proudly preserved by the Henry Lawson Society, it’s the largest collection outside the Mitchell Library in Sydney.

• Take a walk up to Flirtation Hill and enjoy a view of Gulgong and the outdoor mining museum at Red Hill. This outdoor sculptural attraction features a stamper, windlass, a slab hut school room and a relief map of the mining leads around the town.

• Don’t miss the memorial statue of Henry Lawson which stands proudly in the park between Medley and Herbert Streets in Gulgong.

Talk to the locals - Call into The Shanty – the historic visitor information centre at 66 Herbert Street, Gulgong.

Built between 1885 -1890, the cottage became home to local blacksmith in 1892 and it remained in the Gudgeon family until 1950. The Gulgong RSL bought the building in 1987 and today it remains its original charm and historic value. Open Thursday - Monday from 10am – 3pm. At other times, visitor information is available at the Gulgong RSL next door.

Kandos

A small town set beneath a grand mountain, Kandos offers artists ample material in the distinctive architecture, beautiful setting and surrounds. Kandos began as an industrial village when a group of entrepreneurs recognized that natural deposits of limestone, coal and shale near a railway line could grow into a cement industry and after purchasing substantial acreage they subdivided it and lured other enterprising people to the first land sale in 1915. Within a decade, Kandos, the youngest centre in New South Wales, had a population of three thousand and a cement works that was the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, employing 450 men. The cement works, supplying cement for the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, has now closed and a new era has begun with artists visiting the area, inspired by the dramatic escarpment and friendly townsfolk.

• See the architecture - Built in the art deco age, Kandos has many fine examples of mission and classical revival architecture.

• Get outdoors - Stargazers, birdwatchers and bushwalkers will find much to enjoy in this tranquil town. For the more active there is an Olympic swimming pool, a skateboard park and a cycle/walking track to Rylstone and Charbon.

• Play golf - Henbury golf course, designed by two famous golf architects in the 1930s is a challenging par 70/18-hole course. You can play at your leisure – no hold-ups, no pressure, no-one overtaking.

• Visit a unique motorcycle museum - even those with no previous love of bikes will love Bikes and Buds museum where Ken will take you on a tour and tell stories. With some extremely rare and unique bikes, the museum also houses a café and bike clothing store.

• Talk to the locals - Call into Down the Track café, Kandos Railway station for visitor information Wednesday to Monday. Ph: 1800 816 304.

Rylstone

Settled in the 1830s, Rylstone is one of the most picturesque towns in the region, and one of the oldest settlements west of the Great Dividing Range. It has retained its historic 19th Century character in its architecture – old sandstone buildings and wide streets, beautiful plane trees and quaint shops and cafes give the town its atmosphere and aesthetic appeal.

• Take a walk - The entire downtown is in a heritage conservation zone, and many of the historic buildings in the main street feature heritage plaques. Pick up a copy of the self-guided Rylstone Historic Walk and explore the village on foot. Stroll past the four churches, two hotels, police complex (constable’s house and lockup, sergeant’s house and courthouse), and the ex-post office, all built in stone between 1872 and 1885.

• Stop for lunch - Visit or picnic in the lovely showground on the banks of the Cudgegong River, in which platypus can still be spotted if you’re lucky. Rylstone offers excellent cafés and coffee, traditional pubs, boutique shopping, and olive oil and wine tasting outlets.

• Get outdoors - Head into Wollemi National Park to bushwalk, swim, canoe or paddle at the spectacular Dunns Swamp.

• Try local wine - visit the NSW heritage-listed Bridge View Inn - open to the public 7 days a week and offers visitors a chance to see some of the interior of an 1872 Inn. De Beau Repaire Wines have a French inspired tasting room open Fridays 11:30am - 2:30pm, weekends & public holidays: 11.30am-3.30pm with luncheon platters, wine tasting and regional delicacies available.”

The region’s historic villages

40km from Mudgee, Hargraves is often referred to as the veteran of the regions’ gold towns. The gold rush began there in 1851 with the discovery of the famous ‘Kerr’s Hundredweight’ – a nugget which contained 1272 ounces of gold. Since the surge of miners that followed this discovery, the village is a quiet and peaceful village with a general store, post office and school.

Nestled in a beautiful valley 40km south west of Mudgee, Windeyer is steeped in history. Gold was discovered in 1851 and during that era it was common for fossickers to yield up to four ounces of gold per pan. The heritage listed 1911 Windeyer Hotel still operates, as does a caravan park where you can hire gold panning equipment. Some of the world’s best superfine wool comes from the district and in the early 1980s, one graziers’ bale was sold at auction to the highest price ever secured in Australia at the time.

Lue (chain of waterholes) believed to be pronounced in the Aboriginal language like Loowee.Lue is the perfect location to sample boutique food and wine fresh from the farm or cellar door. For the more adventurous there is a premier Motocross facility as well as some fantastic hiking, kayaking and fishing right at your doorstep.

Wollar is the gateway to the Goulburn River National Park. According to records, a noted pastoralist called Fitzgerald was one of the first settlers in Wollar who employed many shepherds and stockmen to supervise his cattle and sheep. The village was officially declared in March 1885. Wollar once boasted a butter factory and a bakery, which allegedly was so good, the bread was carted back to Mudgee daily.

The very picturesque Bylong Valley was first explored by William Lawson in 1822 after the discovery of the Goulburn River which was named after Henry Goulburn, the Colonial Secretary. Today the Bylong valley is a lush and green area famous for racehorse and beef cattle studs. There is a general store, a school, a public hall and it is home to the famous Bylong Mouse Races which are held annually on the last Saturday of March. Part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage area, and on the Cudgegong River 25km east of Kandos and Rylstone, Dunns Swamp is an outstanding area for biodiversity of plant and animal communities. The area’s vegetation is dominated by Australia’s unique eucalypts (100 species) and other ancient relic species including the Wollemi Pine. A total of 107 birds species have been identified in Dunns Swamp, seven of which have been confirmed breeding. A full copy of the biodiversity of the area, including a list of breeding birds, can be obtained from the National Parks office in Mudgee.

The wonders of our National Parks

Wollemi National Park contains the largest wilderness area in NSW and safeguards a rich variety of wildlife and spectacular scenery. Part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, it’s a mecca for sightseeing, bush walking, camping and wilderness adventure. Dunns Swamp camping and picnic area, east of Rylstone, is set amongst stunning sandstone pagoda rock formations. Canoeing, swimming and walking make this a popular spot. Camping fees apply.

An easy half hour’s drive north-east of Mudgee on the Wollar Road, this Reserve is a world renowned bird watching spot, with more than 160 native species recorded including the rare Regent Honeyeater. Walkers can meander along the Castle Rocks track (8 km round trip) or enjoy a picnic or BBQ at Moolarben Picnic Area.

Winding along a 90km stretch of rugged sandstone country bordering the Goulburn River, the park conserves a unique mix of western and eastern fauna and flora. Pitch your tent on the river bank at the Spring Gully or Big River campsites, accessed by Mogo Road north of Wollar village, or get a bird’s eye view of the area at Lees Pinch lookout, off the Ringwood Road between Wollar and Merriwa.

30kms east of Coolah, the park is set amidst the stately eucalypt forest at an altitude of more than 1200m. Visit magnificent waterfalls, view dazzling vistas of the Liverpool plains or choose from a number of sites for a great camping experience. A selection of walking tracks can lead to encounters with giant Snow Gums, ancient Grass Trees, and the local wildlife.

When visiting our National Parks please help to preserve the natural environment: • Take your rubbish with you • Leave pets at home • Observe all fire bans • Leave all plants, animals, Aboriginal sites and rock formations as you find them.

Explore our region on foot, by bike or by car

Mudgee, Gulgong, Kandos and Rylstone all boast beautiful, well maintained parks. Take a stroll around any one of them and you’ll find lovely old trees, gardens and some excellent facilities. Robertson Park is home to a band rotunda which was built as a memorial to the Premier John Robertson and to those who fought in the Boer War.

Lawson Park situated on the Cudgegong River has an Olympic swimming pool, a playground, BBQs and public toilets. There’s always ducks and abundant bird life to be enjoyed in this part of Mudgee town.

Blackman Park James Blackman, the man who discovered the Cudgegong River in 1821.

Memorial Park was originally the catholic cemetery and is now used only for recreational purposes but you’ll still find some of the original old headstones there.

Anzac Park in Gulgong has a rotunda which, built in 1916 is believed to be the second oldest rotunda in Australia and is representative of the tin hats worn by the Anzacs.

Red Hill in Gulgong is home to a mine-shaft, poppet head and the mural, or take a stroll to Flirtation Hill for a panoramic view of Gulgong and district.

Rotary Lookout in Kandos has the best view over the valley taking in the towns of Rylstone and Kandos. Tindale Park on the

banks of the Cudgegong River is perfect for a picnic and has appropriate facilities. Collect a copy of ‘Come for a Walk around Kandos’ from any of the visitor centres across the region. It’s informative and handy and perfect for a self guided tour of the town.

‘Mudgee Walks’ is a map with commentary about the history of many of the town’s public buildings. You can pick up a copy at the Mudgee Visitors Centre, or Colonial Inn Museum in Market Street Mudgee.

The Rylstone Historical Walk is an essential guide for a walking tour of the lovely sandstone and heritage buildings of Rylstone. Collect one at any of the visitor centres or download from www.rylstone.com

Whether you’re a passionate cyclist, a recreational rider or a learner, the Mudgee Region has much to offer the cyclist. The footpaths are positively groaning with locals and visitors enjoying the sunshine at the busy cafes as Mudgee does breakfasts like few other places – and all day! Choose from Mod-Oz, Thai, Italian, Indian, Chinese, pub grub, home-style café cooking, Lebanese feasts, wood fired pizza, or sophisticated bar food – you’ll find it all in the Mudgee Region.

The region is a major producer of olives and high quality olive oils and is also renowned for tapenades, honey, hazelnuts and pistachios, jams, wine jellies, pestos and salad dressings and a range of marinades. Goat, sheep and cow’s milk cheeses can be tasted at a factory or a farm gate. Lamb, beef, free range pork and yabbies are just some of the regional and seasonal delicacies on many of the local menus.

To enjoy the local foods and to meet their makers, take a farm walk or visit the monthly farmers markets. You won’t be disappointed, as there are cafes and restaurants to cater for all palates and all purses.

Choose Mudgee Wine

Our winemakers seek to make each wine unique, and the diversity of climate, soil, and experience provide you with an unparalleled opportunity to sample great wines with personality, character and life, while relaxing in a beautiful, peaceful retreat away from the fast pace of city life.

In Mudgee, you will discover older wine styles fondly remembered from

the past alongside exciting new wines relatively unknown here, yet household names in other parts of the world. You’ll meet people who love what they do and are passionate about their region. You’ll find the unmistakeable stamp of concentration, character and European finesse demonstrated in our wines, carefully matched to complement local produce at one of our eateries.

September is a fabulous time to visit our region and enjoy our month long wine festival where you can experience the best that life has to offer in our thriving town. Take time to saviour and enjoy the fruits of natures harvest and talk to the winemakers about the recent vintage or our cheesemakers about what wines match the varieties of cheese.

Grape growing in the RegionMudgee is known for its warm summer days and cool evenings. Our elevation allows for a slower ripening period which makes this area ideal for producing wines with great intensity of colour and flavour.

Originally vines were planted here in the 1850s. A rebirth was seen in the 1970s and again in the 1990’s. Australia’s Chardonnay boom started in this region, with a block at the historic Craigmoor Vineyard being the source for cuttings which supplied much of the country’s plantings. While historically Mudgee’s reputation has been built on big reds and Chardonnay, this region has now seen a growth in other varieties that thrive in our Mediterranean style climate. These include Sangiovese, Barbera, Zinfandel and Tempranillo. Riesling is also seeing a rebirth in the area, with several winning national awards.

Mudgee soils are typically a red brown loam, with the subsoil clay rich. They are well structured, allowing healthy root growth, good water infiltration and aeration. The evocative red colours of Mudgee soils are not only attractive but are indicative of good aeration and drainage essential to vine and wine quality. Vines don’t like wet feet on acid soils common in other parts of Australia. Mudgee has good soil structure due to the presence of limestone, from which the soils are derived.

DIVERSITY

Elevations of 430 meters to over 1,100 meters above sea level give the area a climatic range equivalent

of Spain to Alsace. As a result Mudgee produces a diverse range of grape

varietals. Chardonnay and Shiraz are complimented by Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Tempranillo, Barbera and Sangiovese.

Our region can cater to all tastes with traditional full bodied reds through

to zesty modern whites and alternate varieties.

We welcome you to explore all that our region has to offer. Cheers.

Mid-Western Regional Council

Keep up to date with what we’re doing on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

www.midwestern.nsw.gov.auwww.choosemudgeeregion.com.au

Council off ices in Mudgee, Gulgong and Rylstone, open weekdays from 8am to 4.30pm.

Phone: 02 6378 2850

Email: [email protected]

Our progressive, prosperous region is renowned for its natural beauty and the friendly welcome we give to visitors. Discover its rich history and natural beauty, and enjoy the hospitality for which we are famous.

Tourism is a vital part of our local economy and one of Council’s key priorities. Mid-Western Regional Council works with the local tourism industry to make sure you’ll have a fabulous experience when visiting and ensure our offering keeps growing.

The region includes the historic towns of Gulgong, Kandos, Mudgee, Rylstone and many rural villages. Prior to white settlement this was Wiradjuri Country.

The region’s population exceeds 23,000 with many ‘tree changers’ who have traded city life for the joys of country living. Our culture is diverse and active, with a strong metropolitan flavour.

Our regional sporting complex features a world-class, 1,000 seat grandstand, collection of playing fields, netball courts, playgrounds and an off-leash dog area.

We’ve hosted national and international events, seeing Mudgee quickly become a key sports tourism destination.

In Gulgong, Red Hill is the site of gold discovery. Step back in time as you visit the old poppet head and mine shaft.

The emerald oval of the Rylstone Showground is nestled beside the Cudgegong River and overlooked by the town’s CBD. Rylstone is the perfect base for a scenic drive or bushwalk in the wilderness.

At the gateway to the wonderland of Wollemi National Park, catch one of the unique events that Kandos hosts.

Our community is leading regional NSW through strong growth. Opportunities for local businesses have resulted in endless possibilities for visitors.

Council hosts dozens of events each year which support our robust tourism industry and show off the best the region has to offer. There is always something we’re working on to keep you coming back.
