As though writing the editorial isn’t arduous enough in itself, opening with sad news, in the form of the passing of another club stalwart is always difficult. Longstanding Far Far South West GO, John Thomas died recently. Elegant, impeccably dressed and reserved are words that would never apply to John - irascible, outspoken, opinionated and very enthusiastic are more apposite. To say that John was a character is an understatement, a man exemplified by the dispatch riders coat he always wore when driving his Morgan …and that he requested that ‘The Red Flag’ be sung at his funeral. John will be sorely missed Old friend Brian Watts has supplied memories on page 43. I hope there is sufficient variety to satisfy most this month … and yet again, due to the need to advertise various up-coming events in good time has resulted in articles being held over until a future issue. If any one has a comment on this situation and can suggest a way forward without undue cost, we would be pleased to hear from you I have obtained costings from Lavenham Press, our ever-helpful printers with regard to increasing the number of pages or enlarging the size to B5 - halfway between this (A5) and A4. Such actions would have cost implications but could be minimised by increased advertising to supplement the costs. Do please have your say.

This month,. so many event are on offer that the list would take up the entire inside cover. As the events are listed after each group report, this may not be an inconvenience to the majority. Both Steve Uprichard and myself, would like to see greater use of the website., where much more detailed information could be displayed. Steve has improved the website beyond recognition (as well as improving the

membership card and renewal system and … I could go on… but Help has been kindly offered by a lady member Helen Hunt to help Steve in the collation of event dates in co-operation with the Publicity team of Ian and Richard. She has very generously offered to take telephone enquiries and anyone needing clarification can go to Helen Hunt for it.

The season for fairweather Morganing is upon us and the time for fettling should be over and threewheelers of all speeds ready for a season overflowing with events One question I have yet to resolve ( apart from finding time to get into my workshop) is how should the name of the source of our affliction be titled? Morgan Threewheeler, Morgan Three-Wheeler with a hyphen or as three words … Morgan Three Wheeler. To date , no one has noticed that each version has appeared variously in the title over the months, and a few more . Please someone give me a … cont/p 49

Related to the discussion of track rod ends is the issue of the rods themselves breaking at the threads with sometimes embarrassing (or worse) results. The design of the tapered ends does not allow for vertical changes of angle between the rod and the steering arm that occur when that side of the suspension is compressed. In effect, the track rod is trying to twist the arm and in so doing is stressing the weakest point which is the root of the thread.

Whilst accepting the limitations of the original design, there are two things that can be done to prevent breakage, one being the use of a good quality alloy

. It is much easier to end up with a thread parallel to the rod if you cut it on a lathe even if you finish it off with a die. If you do it this way it is vital that you have the correct radius on the point of the tool to avoid a sharp stress raiser that will certainly the site of any subsequent breakage.

It is a sobering thought that the Morgan Threewheeler might have been consigned to history amongst the many innovative and worthy designs created by engineers who were not entrepreneurs. Fortunately HFS was both. He not only created a brilliant and enduring design, but also marketed his creation in a highly effective way. Key to his promotion of the car was its success in competition. HFS started by gaining a Gold Star in the 1910 ACU 6 days, Harry Martin then won the first cyclecar race at Brooklands in 1912, HFS took the 1 hour record also in 1912 and Gordon McMinnies

Post first war, the roll of honour is resonant with the names of E.B.Ware, Harold Beart, Ron Horton, Gwenda Stewart, Tommy Rhodes, Henry Laird and many others. Today, the roll of honour resounds with the names of Bill Tuer, Gary Caroline, Sue Derbyshire and many more too numerous to mention. Just as the prestige, development and

sales of Morgans in the early days were built on its racing and trials success, so, today the international profile of the Morgan Three wheeler is founded to a considerable extent on its current racing success. So, you may ask what difference this makes when the average member wakes up in the morning. A good question. I would contend that it creates a sense of pride in the car, a sense of belief in having a vehicle that is quite simply, the best threewheeler ever made. Racing stimulates enthusiasm for Club events, racing, touring or social, and, amongst the younger generations a desire to be a part of something truly exciting. If this Club is not to become a collection of miserable old gits reminiscing about days gone by and picking their way past piles of unrestored Morgan bits to get to the lawnmower, we need vision. The sight of Morgans thundering round the track can set our pulses racing and inspire us and succeeding generations to get those rebuilds done and get out there on the road to come back smiling and wiping the flies off our teeth.

“She goes!” Supposedly these are the words uttered by Frank Nichols when the first Elva overhead inlet valve head fitted to a Ford sidevalve engine burst into life and he christened the company with a shortened French version “Elva.” At the start of every season I understand how he felt. Along with many others in the Sporting fraternity I have resurrected the racer from it’s winter resting place to prepare it for the season. “She Goes.” It started straight away. A brief fast run along the A50 to blow out the bugs, mine and the car’s, then off to the workshop for a thorough check. It always feels so fast for the first mile or two as I readjust to the noise and wind before settling down to enjoy the ride. “She goes” also applies to the competition season as well. This season we have BHR Mallory Park back in its rightful place as the first meeting of the MTWC Challenge. The usual suspects will line up on the grid and news is that Tony Quinn will have his new TM car out to compete against his daughter Cathy, Charles Pilbeam, Tony Pearson and Richard White to name but a few. Bristol must be a hive of activity as David Poplar has been busy building another F-Type which should be out sometime in the season. We will also see the debut of Bronte Pearson who is taking the passenger seat beside Danny Hodgson following the birth of Danny and Sandra’s son Ellis James. Congratulations to the Hodgson family from us all. Passengers are in short supply at present and I for one have lost my passenger, Steve, who has had to retire due to family commitments. Being a passenger is an ideal way into Morgan Three Wheeler Racing, particularly for younger members who don’t have their own car and want the fun for the cost of turning up at the meeting. It is the ideal way of learning the ropes and I remember Danny Hodgson saying that he learned the circuits when he was passengering for Kim Allen; having raced against Danny I can vouch for the truth of this! There will be others who compete at the Sprint and Hill climbs. Dave

Say with his 2 Speeder, Rob Pike with his daughter Georgie and we hope to see Ruth Ross in the well known ex-Dave Winbow car she has acquired. The Racing Class will have its usual group of 8/80s with Bill and Maggie Tuer, Greg Bibby and Paula Heaney, Hamish Bibby, Tim and Annette Gray, Neil Smith and Nigel and Sarah Challis. Chas Reynolds with Steve Ash in the passenger seat is one on his own and hopefully will have the engine that broke at Schwanenstadt rebuilt and faster than ever. Ewan Cameron is another individual who will run the Hale Morgan when time allows him. The 2 Speeder brigade of Sue Darbyshire, Alistair Rew, Gary Caroline, Duncan Wood and Iain Stewart will campaign at VSCC and some Challenge rounds. Iain has now retired and hopes to do many more events this season. At some point in the season the 2 speeders hope to be joined by Matt Johnston who has taken possession of Bob Towell’s flat sided Aero with the intention of competing and by Martyn Baylis who has also retired to devote more time to racing! The 2 F-Types, myself and Danny or Dave Hodgson (never sure which one in which car) will bring up the rear of the Racing Class although there are rumours that more OHIV F-Types are being prepared. Chris Harfield has been the stalwart of Standard Class and while less inclined to circuit race this season will be competing in the Sprints and Hill climbs. At various times he will be joined by Steve Lister and Ian Hughes. The 5 Speeder Class will be stronger this year and for the first time will be part of the Morgan race at VSCC Cadwell. Graham and Dawn Sherwood and Austin Smith with passenger Julia Perry have all taken the CTC/BRA courses, obtained their race licences, and will be on the grid along with Mark Reeves and Joanna Wallace in the MMC car. John and Jacqui Scruton are also going to compete at the Sprints and Hill climbs. They need a few more 5 Speeder owners to join

An Electrifying 5-Speeder Dave Thomlinson

A really nice installation of lithium-ion battery-electric power for the Morgan 3 Wheeler done by the Niche Vehicle Network was one of the stars of the show. The 288 Headway cell pack sits in the front behind the wheels and is shaped to slot into the transmission tunnel normally occupied by a Mazda MX-5 gearbox.

“We tried to keep it simple and use existing mountings and our initial costings are that we could produce this at a similar price to the petrol-powered 3 wheeler,” said Graham Chapman, Morgan’s technical director. “So you’d basically have the choice of petrol or battery power.”

them and intensify the competition. Come on you 5 Speeder owners. Curborough is a special occasion being the event to encourage anyone in the club to take part and they do, some with their Morgans and some with vintage motorcycles. This year it takes place on August 23rd and it would be good to repeat the success of last year’s event. There is no reason why anyone in the club should not take part in the Sprint and the Hillclimbs at Loton and Prescott using the ACU one event licence. MTWC member Grant Sellars who organises the two hill climbs for Middlesborough Motor Club would also love to have a few more Morgans at their events which can also be done with a one event licence. So to the Events for April: BHR Mallory Park 11/12th April. This should be a well attended meeting with plenty of keen competition. Spectators have a very good view of the circuit and we are always welcoming to club members so don’t be afraid to poke your nose in to see what’s going on.

VSCC Silverstone 18th April. It is unfortunate that this clashes with our Loton Park Hill climb but I am sure that there will be a 2 Speeder out there troubling the “big boys.” Loton Park 18/19th April. We are lucky enough to have been offered both Saturday and Sunday this year and we will have a good entry. The results will be the average of the best time from both days which should make things very interesting! Manx Classic 23-25th April. This is a combination of three Hill climb and Sprint events and Sue Darbyshire has already entered along with Nancy Thomas who now lives in the IOM and owns the F4 that Sue used to race. I suspect that Ewan Cameron will also be competing. We are very lucky that we have the chance to race our old and new three wheelers. Do it while you can. As one of the racing class said to me tonight “Life’s a bitch and then you die, enjoy the bitch!”

Refurbishing St Christopher John Wandless

The original dash plaque was a non-ferrous stamping. The central St. Christopher medallion with its French motto was common to a number of plaques used by dealers, suppliers etc. The outer circle was unique to Morgans and comes in two types, the earlier “Morgan Runabout” and the later “Morgan Three Wheeler” It is this circle with its raised inner and and outer rings and raised lettering that was filled with black enamel. (photo 1) The replica dash plaque is a bare metal casting which comes without enamel. To make the reproduction plaque look similar to an original, the outer circle needs a black filling. Originally enamelling was done with powdered glass or resin which was put on the object and then fired in a kiln. This does not seem like a good idea for a replica with an unknown melting point. One alternative is to use a hard setting paint with several coats to get the necessary filling. The second is to use a modern cold resin enamel. This is available from craft suppliers, usually by mail order, and is generally used for jewellery making. Google will turn up suppliers and also YouTube demonstrations of the technique. The plaque needs to be cleaned with meths and put on a level surface. The resin is mixed two parts resin to one of hardener by weight. Easier said than done with the small volumes involved. The gloopy mix then has to be put on to the outer circle and pushed up to the edges with a pointed stick. It will not fill everything of its own accord. Avoid getting any resin on the central medallion or the car number area. Do not overfill the outer circle as I did; it should be just possible to see the wording through the resin. Once filled, leave undisturbed for at least 24 hours in a warm place for the resin to harden. (photo 2) Once the resin has cured, the next stage is to cut back any excess resin using fine “wet & dry”, used wet so that all the text is visible. The more you overfill, the more work is required. A final polish with metal polish, T-cut or similar should leave your plaque ready to mount. (photo 3)

Letters, emails, postcards Secondly, the JAP article by Terry Wright

reminded me of my wife’s great-uncle

Arthur Eyre who was an RFC engine itter in

WW1 in the Middle East. Though born in the

Black Country he was tempted down to

London by a job at J.A.Prestwich when he

was demobbed in 1919. Unfortunately the

family had hardly time to get

accommodation when the job disappeared

again and they were left to trail back to

Smethwick penniless … a inancial situation

which took several years to overcome. Was

this, do you think, a result of the moulder’s

strike of 1920 which is mentioned briely in

some historical accounts of the time?

Adrian Holden Area of Low Pressure by email Having read Nev Lear’s request for pictures

for his F Type book, I may be able to help. I

was Ford technical advice for some twenty

years and had collected an amount of

information. The requests over the years

changed from ‘this bit has fallen off’ or

‘what should I do with this problem’ to

‘what is original?’ When I was requested to

produce the F Type hand book the thought

of originality and the most requested

technical advice came to mind.

I had a lot of help with originality from

MTWC members and the archives of Motor

Cycle Weekly also the Morgan Motor Co,

individuals photographs and drawings were

also obtained. However, I did not use all of

the archive photographs which were

supplied. Copies of all the photographs I had

were given to the MTWC library with the

negatives, with the references F4, F2 and FS.

Should Nev require any of these he can

contact me for the reference.

Tyre pressuresHaving read the two write ups regarding

tyre pressures, the only oficial tyre

pressures I have found are 19psi on the

front and 25psi on the back although I have

stated an extra 2 psi may be used. I use

4.50” x 18” all round with 23psi on the front

and 25 psi on the back it gives a “soft ride”. I

believe it has been recommended the 32 psi

Obscure Precision by email Two obscure points came to mind on

reading last month’s stimulating edition:

Firstly, the photographs of Precision

engines reminded me to ask if any member

knows of an account of the history of the

‘Precision’ engine company … or more to

the point of F.E.Baker Engineering who

produced these engines and were a thriving

business in the early ‘20s.

I understand that Frank Baker was a

proliic engineering designer with irons in

several ires…..he was connected with the

Beardmore motorcycle concern for a time

and then went on to market his own ‘Baker’

motorcycle from 1927. This machine was

mainly notable through using the ‘Baker’

design of straight-tube triangulated frame

which was undoubtedly inluenced by

Francis-Barnett’s ‘built-like-a-bridge’

frame….the two companies were close

together in South Birmingham.

Unfortunately Frank Baker’s enterprise

was hit very hard by the Depression and

closed around 1930-31. He was given a job

as sales manager by the James motorcycle

company (also close by) and they bought

his frame design, which they used for little

more than one season, although they did

credit him with it.

The advantage of the pairs of straight

tubes bolted together (but separated by cast

aluminium spacing lugs) evidently did not

impress the market as the model

disappeared again after the 1933 season.

I can attest to the light weight and

stiffness of the design in the vertical plane

as I have a 1933 250cc ’Supersports’ E8

James…but whereas the Francis-B achieved

sideways triangulation by being quite wide,

the Baker frame stayed narrow….rather chic

but worryingly whippy if one wriggles the

handlebars!

Not much to do with Morgans, I know,

but were there comparisons of the

Precision engine to the other types that

Morgan used in the contemporary press?

should be used in the rear tyre for the F4. Some of the older members may recall the photograph of Clarrie Coombes when in the USA sitting against a Morgan with a dressing to his head, having had a rear tyre blow which was inflated to 32 psi and the car rolled. I can only agree with Richard Smith and reiterate, Consult the tyre manufacture. Tony Birks

Chain Reaction by email It is often said that on a three speeder to run a19/38 tooth combination means that the chain wears unevenly because 38 is twice 19 and the same links will meet the same teeth each time. However the chain is 78 links, not wholly divisible by 19 and will therefore

progress round the sprockets. Bob Towell

First Morgan by email It was 60 years ago that I bought my first Morgan at the age of 21 years. It was a 1922 De Luxe with 980cc KTW JAP. Claimed by the factory as weighing only 4 3/4 cwt/240kg. 50mph and 65mpg. Mr Dodge had bought it from a Bank Manager in 1923 and in 1925 "updated" it to try and fool his friends. In those days cars got "old" quite quickly. Close to the centre of Bristol he mainly used a bicycle. The Morgan was used for excursions in the summer and an Austin Seven for the winter. Put away in 1939 I had only to pay him £15 before pumping up the

tyres and getting a tow 12 miles to home. Cleaned it up and went to work in Bristol daily. I used an old road through the countryside and every trip gave me enormous pleasure. The following year I heard of the Club and joined at once. I was an object of pity as most 2 speeder owners were young and poor. "Unable to afford anything better." At the same time a friend got married and his beautiful wife warmed his shirt each morning so it would be nice for him to put on. Those were the days. He had a very odd Morgan. Only later did we identify it as the rare 1932 two seater Family model. Behind the seats across the car was a covered slot to store the side curtain panels. There was a large boot where the back seats would have been. See small picture in "The Three Wheeler Story. Steering Dampers Fred Sissons USA

I enjoyed the article by John Rowland

on steering dampers. I don't mean to pick Nits

with John but strangely coincidental, I have

been researching the subject of vicious

friction rather extensively for the past year.

By strict deinition, using either oil or grease

on the track rod ends simply provides

lubrication. Lubrication is a completely

different study, and is not the same as viscous

(shearing) friction.

What struck me was John's knowledge

of Bugatti viscous friction dampers. A kindred

sprit! You may ind it had to believe, but there

are not many people here in southern Indiana

that know (or care) about the difference

between viscous and dry friction dampers. It'

a lonely pursuit.

Long after Bugatti, MG itted auxiliary

viscous friction dampers to their 'competition'

MG TD's (MG TD/c, called the Mark ll in the

US) and the LeMans MG A's.

These were Andrex friction dampers.

Today, they are often confused with the Andre

-Hartford dampers, even in MG circles.

Probably because no one is sure how to

pronounce the 'x'. Both are friction dampers,

but they exhibit totally different dampening

characteristics.

The Andre-Hartford is a 'dry' friction

damper while the Andrex is a 'hydraulic

viscous friction' damper, similar the Bugatti

dampers that John mentions. Like the Bugatti

dampers, the Andrex dampers had poor seals

and leaked oil. When they ran dry or were

improperly adjusted, the internals destroyed

themselves in short order.

When I installed a pair of the Club's

'soft' springs on my F-type special, it rode

much better but it became obvious that I need

a set of dampers to make it right.

I decided to install a pair of Andrex

because... well to be honest... they look very

cool, or should I say 'period correct' and

esthetics are important to me. But also I enjoy

the fact that a real working set of Andrex is

rare thing these days. Mounting was easy and

best of all... inside they incorporate a pack of

four loating, real WOOD disks! Wood and

Morgan... perfect match!

Inside, each wood disk is sandwiched

between a driven and a stationary steel

surface. The pack is immersed in heavy oil.

The dampening effect is caused by the

shearing of the oil ilm between the wood and

steel disks. Viscous friction dampers are really

not 'adjustable' in the way dry friction

dampers are. There is a fairly precise

'adjustment' required to insure the oil ilm is

Page 17: MTWC Group Events are listed after the GO’s report...THE MONTHLY MAGAZINE OF THE MORGAN THREE-WHEELER CLUB AFFILIATED TO THE ACU: NON - TERRITORIAL 3 ... could be minimised by increased

17

retained. Properly adjusted (off the car), the

wood does not wear. You cannot 'tighten 'em

down' to adjust the dampening as the oil ilm

goes away and you now have lubricated

friction between wood and metal- and the

wood fries. There is a lot of 'Urban legend'

discussion about the required, 'hard to ind'

oil for Andrex, but after discussions with

several top petroleum engineers, any heavy

oil, 140 weight or close, works just ine.

Installation on the trike was simple,

using Heim joints on the links for

articulation. I rebuilt a trashed set of

Andrex and addressed the engineering

shortcomings of the original design that

almost insured their short life. I used

stainless steel hex-drive rotating disks, high

impact bushings, o-ring seals and venting.

My rear damper is old school- dry

springs wrapped in cord to induce more

dry (Coulomb) friction among the leaves. I

wrap them in plastic to keep them dry and

then a leather gaiter for those important

esthetics. Works better than I expected.

Now if I can just get my hands on some

electrorheological luid for the Andrex, igure

out the voltage/viscosity relationship... I could

have adjustable front dampers.

On October 29th 1913 the A-CU ran its irst

one-day trial for cyclecars. The course was

109 miles to be taken at a speed of at least 17

mph and included an ‘interesting’ selection

of hills, hairpin turns, and a stop-and-restart

test. Apart from the lunch break there were

to be no stops en route (two of the four

Morgans entered suffered punctures and

were relegated to second class awards as a

consequence).

The judge of

the course, chair-

man of the A-CU

Competitions

Committee and a

keen cyclecarist,

was the Rev. EP

Greenhill (it was

a Wednesday, so

he could have

time off).

All vehicles had

to carry an

observer. This

caused a

problem since

two of the

vehicles entered were monocars – Mr Dew’s

minimalist creation with a chassis made of

two deep planks of ash bent into a boat

shape (plan view), and McMinnies’ GP (the

one that won at Amiens) with a smaller body.

These two were to be followed by observers

on motorcycles (or, as the rules stated, any

other form of transport). There were 31

starters.

‘The course was very much more severe than anticipated and on the greater part very sticky after heavy rain’. The main fun was at

the restarting test on Bore Hill (Coldharbour

Lane on modern maps, 6.6% average

gradient, 15.9% maximum). ‘So that the engine should be as hot as possible, the very last bit of the series of long gradients was selected . . . Many competitors, when lagged to stop, ran back, some for a considerable distance, while one found a resting place in a

ditch’. The two monocar drivers ‘lew up the hill at speed on restarting’, leaving their

motorcycling observers well behind.

Haste Hill, ‘a deceiving little acclivity’, was

the stiffest part of the trial. Just south of

Haslemere, it has an average gradient of

3.4% but steepest of 14.9% at a sharp curve

just at the start, and is about 2 miles long

On that October day in 1913, sections were

covered in mud and leaves, so that while

McMinnies went straight up in top gear, his

observer was sampling both sides of the road

in rapid succession. ‘Mr. J. Gibson, on a twoseater standard Morgan, also had some exciting moments, owing to his turning round and waving to his friends on the hill’. And the

rain came down in buckets as the route

continued over the Hog’s Back.

McMinnies was irst with 65 mpg. His

gears were 5¼ and 7, condition of body and

engine at the end of the trial was marked as

fair, with the comment that he had “Little

regard for appearance”. Mr Bushy in a 2-

seater Morgan was third with 54 mpg and

“Condition fair”. Dew’s monocar, 5th with 49

mpg, had the comment “Bodywork crude”.

Frank Rozelaar is borrowing the ‘Gerald’ for the opening run as I am otherwise engaged on that day and I will hopefully have had a chance to carry out a ’shakedown’ run just up the road to the Morganeer’s lunch in February. Bill Higginson’s trailer has unfortunately succumbed to the dreaded rust bug around the winch mounting so some welding and re-fabrication will be required. This will not prevent anyone borrowing either the trailer or towing the ‘Gerald’ as I have an electric winch that can be used in the short term.

The 3-speeder Morgan I have been using for some time is still with the original type Borg & Beck clutch. In the mid 1980’ties I was using a “cold” garage and never had any problems with the clutch “corroding stuck” after the Norwegian winter. Around 1990 I started using a Quinton Hazell (Hillman) friction disc. At that time I had a heated garage. No problems with the clutch here either. Two years ago I moved, and are now once again having a garage which is not heated. The last 2 times I took the Morgan out of winter hibernation, the friction disc was stuck to the flywheel- and pressure plates – by corrosion. Each time I ended up pulling the engine and dismantling the clutch to free it. Corrosion between the parts was evident. I consulted some helpful MTWC seniors, also some “locals”. Apparently it is not uncommon that a clutch may “corrode stuck” during storage. The locals suggested shock treatment to free the clutch; Tow the vehicle in neutral, then crash it into gear. Too brutal for me. Anyway, I had a look at the old center plate. I don’t know the make; it looks to be of a more advanced design than

the QH type. Among other things the contact faces of the linings are slotted. Another interesting feature is that the lining material is reinforced with either copper or brass strands, instead of the steel strands of the QH item. I assume that the reason for this is corrosion more than anything else, even if one could argue about heath transfer properties and so on.

So now the old friction plate is back in place. I cross fingers and hope that the sticking clutch is thing of the past. I cannot recall having read much in the Bulletin about these matters. I am pretty sure that there are club members with opinions and advice. Any such comments would be appreciated.

Touring and Events Ian Parkinson

Morgan Events and Morgan Touring's

all members - events designed to encourage the use of Morgan Three Wheelers. I would like to give members an update and the latest news. Some twenty members have expressed interest in Morgan Touring. Please note that I do not include the word Section - it

are spread throughout the country and abroad. I see Morgan Touring being an important part of the Club's operations and I believe it vital that we encourage members (and future members) to use their vehicle and fly the MTWC flag. So ... I intend to start off Morgan Touring slowly and use its running-in period to talk to people who attend events, to see how we can develop and expand its activities and organise events in which members want to participate. As part of the PR and Events department, Morgan Touring will put on meetings - both weekend and day events are being planned. An overseas member has kindly offered to help organise a meeting in the Pecos Europas in Northern Spain. You will find details of one of this year’s meetings in this copy of The Bulletin. This is at Shobdon Airfield in Herefordshire and we do hope you will support us. (See pages 6 and 7).

There will be other similar one day events happening around the country - watch out for details soon. We also plan to have a Club stand at the NEC this year, 13,14,15th November. The theme, we hope, will be lady Morgan drivers. An even bigger hope will be to have the stand ‘womanned’ (instead of manned) by some of our ladies. A prerequisite will be an eagerness to talk to the visitors. Interested ? Please contact me as soon as possible. Ian Parkinson tel. 01823 277852 [email protected] [email protected]

Events of Interest. Oakmere Morgan, Manchester Road, Northwich are having an open day on Saturday 25th April. All MTWC members are welcome, there will be test drives of the new three wheeler and the Morgan range. Refreshments are available.

, Totteroak Courtyard, Horton, Bristol, are having an open day. MTWC South West Group are attending and have been asked to provide a range of vintage Morgan Three Wheelers as a display. The display will be of Vintage Morgan and Lotus vehicles. We have a couple of spaces left in the display, please contact me if you can help with a vehicle. Last year’s event was extremely popular, this year's will be even better.

Jointing Compound Malcolm Bull

Over 40 years ago, while I was rebuilding racing engines for prototype sports racing cars, and speedway engines, I was told about a jointing compound called Wellseal and was

told it was especially good for use on solid copper gaskets. At the time, I could not get my hands on any of this

compound, so have mainly been using Hylomar Light. At the beginning of January,I managed to get hold tin of Wellseal at an auction, which lead to me to making an internet search for Wellseal, only to find, it is once again, freely available in tubes or tins. It is now claimed to have been developed by Rolls Royce.

I bought a 500ml tin and will use it in the future. It is like a shellac, and should be put on

. .

I was told solid copper head gaskets should have this compound used on assembly, so now I look forward to trying it out. For more information, contact, Wellseal, Kommerling UK Ltd, Unit 27 Riverside Way, Uxbridge, Middlesex. UB8 2YF. Tel 01895 465600. Members may like to know, the last Speedway JAP engine I owned, was a very late twin cam, four valve one in a speedway bike. The engine was powerful but heavy, especially in high level weight! … so never became widely used. …. Excellent stuff .. Ed

So front springs now in stock

The soer version of the V-Twin front main springs are now in stock and are selling fast. The standard spring (R422) is rated at 460 lbs/1” while the new design (R422/2) is 406 1bs/1”. They also fit inside the standard spring covers. I have them fied to my car along with Lambrea dampers and I’m pleased with soer ride.

Other new stock batches JAP: LTOW/Z cyclinder base flange studs & nuts, KTW inlet manifold nuts. Matchless: oil feed control valve springs, oil filters.

Moss Gearbox When Morgan decided our cars needed a modern 3 speed and reverse gear boxes the Burman box was selected however a Moss Box was also developed but only got to prototype stage. We were recently contacted by Ashley Middleton who had heard of this box and wanted to recreate one as a project for the apprences in his business. Mogspares policy is to not loan out its paerns (we have over 40 in stock for parts ranging from the “M” foot step to MX4 cylinder heads) and if a request is made to have parts manufactured from them to make them as a Mogspares project. However, as the Moss Box never went into producon and this seem like a wonderful project to support, Ashley now has the paern. We wish Ashley and his apprences every success with their project.

Mogspares Lists of Club spares are shown on the website www.mtwc.co.uk and in previous copies of The Bullen. Ford Jan 15. JAP Aug 14, Matchless Jun 14, Transmission Apr 14, Misc Apr 15. Sales Officers will advise of availability and any price changes.

Buying Mogspares items Ordering: You order spares from the appropriate Sales Officers, (see below), who keep stocks of spares, as listed in most issues of The Bulletin. (In general, items that are not JAP, Matchless or Ford are dealt with by the Transmission Sales Officer.) Payment: When a Sales Officer sends your order, he includes an invoice and remittance advice. Payment is sent on receipt of items, with the remittance advice, or copy of invoice to the Mogspares Financial Administrator - not to the Sales Officer. Payment can be made by: 1. Cheque payable to "Mogspares" 2. BACS electronic transfer (internet or

telephone banking) directly into the account stated on the remittance form. Please state your name and the invoice number so that we can identify payment.

3. Bank Card, by contacting the Administrator by telephone, email or letter giving card details and the invoice to be paid. Due to bank charges there is a 1.5% surcharge should payment be made by UK debit card, and 5.5% if made by other cards plus VAT where applicable.

Administration: The Mogspares Co-ordinator manages the Mogspares system and arranges the ordering of new spares and ‘may’ be contacted about problems and queries. He does not deal with sales, or stock spares himself - nor do the Mogspares Financial Administrator or Technical Advisors.

The Spring Washer Debate John Chatwin

Ed Mazula was vehement but I fear a trifle unfair in his condemnation of spring washers. I spent many years in the motor trade and heavy plant industries. In the main, heavy applications use flat washers which avoid pick up and false torque readings as a result. Ed is correct that in industries such as aircraft and motor racing where safety is more important than cost, castle nuts with split pins are of course the way to go; examination of military surplus equipment will emphasise this point. Such fixings were to be found in early motor vehicles before the advent of mass production at the cheapest rate. In less vital industries where time and cost become competitive, especially in the service side of the industry, the role of the spring washer is largely to avoid total loss of an item if and when it comes loose, not to stop it loosening in the first place.

Group Reports BROOKLANDS It’s been very busy for me since my last report. Last month ended with a Press Day at Brooklands Museum to publicise the forth coming Double Twelve weekend. The idea was for the members of the motoring press to take part in a little competition in vintage cars. The press photographers were given instruction sheets for a couple of driving tests. They were to guide

. Last time I had a passenger with a very bad stammer and so “rrrr-ight” and llll-eft” instructions were often too late. This year, left and right changed to an ambiguous “your side”and “my side” mid-way through the test. There was a slalom course to be driven around in 2CVs while balancing two foot balls on plates mounted on sticks on the front of the car. Just to add a bit of spice, the steering turned in the opposite direction. The Carolines and I spent a nice day just buggering about among the vintage cars. The month ended with the Group Christmas bash at the Canadian Pavilion, a change of venue but still within Bisley Camp. This Pavilion was built from material sent over from Canada around 1898. It’s entirely of wood but it is no beach hut. Club chairman Adrian Murray-Leslie started proceedings with grace and forty one

. With plenty of accommodation in the pavilion twenty one overnighters tucked into the full English in the morning. Sam Savage

. We did not leave until after mid-day. Feed-back has been very encouraging. Everyone seems to like Bisley and have taken to the Canadian Pavilion. Bisley is a place I am happy to park the Morgan overnight.

I drove the Sports Family to the meeting at the New Inn Send on the first Tuesday of the month. The Sports was the only Morgan in the car park. The pub was busy as usual, and talk appeared to be a continuation of the Dinner. It was nice to see Alison brook. Sam Savage did not disappoint, he had tools and materials to give away. I collected some bass tube and a spanner. Earlier in the afternoon Peter Faulkner had fitted together two odd halves of a JAP rocker box for to my Sports.

had a selection of photographs of racing at Crystal Palace taken around 1964. Several at the meeting were on the grid and could identify many well-known club members. Pete is moving his workshop and all sort of things are being found.

Trevor Seymour The Next meeting 7thApril at the New Inn, Send, Surrey GU23 7EN EAST ANGLIA

I had the pleasure of escorting the lady in the red F type. What fine machines they are. After a quick service and pump up of tyres, we were off . The added enclosure plus the magic of the starter button made a most enjoyable ride. But please don't ask why her handbag is so heavy.(I'll tell you, spare condensers!) We met up with Mr and Mrs Colin Klyn en route, in their newly acquired transport. Had an M on the bonnet and 4 wheels …. not sure of the model, but a rare one from 1960's. couldn't keep RED in sight, on the way back though. Rumours have surfaced in Cambridgeshire of a garage find, dog-eared, Super Aero in pieces. We hope it stays here. Mr. Josnes. Next group meeting, 3rd Tuesday, Hare Arms, Stow Bardolph. 8 pm 2nd May 'Cauliflower Run' more details at next meeting. 3/4th May, Stradsett Country Fayre

EAST ANGLIA – WOOLPIT Only seven of us in March, spring not yet sprung. In the car park Mike and Ann’s Lagonda M45 Pillarless Saloon dwarfed the only Morgan present, Brian’s smart silver and wine red 1960 4/4 Mk.II with 1500cc motor.

. Perusing a magazine we spotted a tip for Simon Rayfield, to ensure his Plus-Eight will start when reassembled. Borrow eight small children, and give each a plug lead to hold. Tell them not to drop the leads, then turn the engine slowly by hand with the ignition ‘on’. As each child responds, number them sequentially on the forehead with a felt-tip pen. This will yield the firing order for reconnecting the leads. As we departed after lunch, Martin headed for the hospital to visit Sue. A horse trod on her foot, breaking some toes. Whilst hobbling as a result, she suffered a badly deranged replacement hip, and we heard she was in traction awaiting arrival of spare parts and an appropriate consultant to fit them. We sent her our good wishes for a speedy recovery. Next month should be warmer, so let’s see some of you in your Three-Wheelers ! “Raedwald”

. Malcolm D Bull Sunday 12th April, Club Opening Run. Wed 18thApril, Group Meeting 6pm till late, at The Royal Oak, Brandon. Sunday 26th April, National Drive It day.

FAR, FAR SOUTH WEST A quiet month, not too much happening this time of year down here in Cornwall, the group meeting was a bit thin on the ground, some members down with flue and other commitments etc, those who did attend spent a couple of enjoyable hours taking Morgans and bits, David Blight offered some old unusual tools, no one was able to identify them as usual, certainly not much use when working on your Morgan, but, it was fun anyway. The other gathering was LLoyds Black and White breakfast meet early March, weather was kind and sunny, always well attended as usual with a goodly mix of vintage/classic bikes and cars. Brian Galbraith reports he is short on marshals for the MCC Lands End trial located in Bishops Wood just outside Wadebridge, if you would like to help out, give Brian a call on 01208 812224 asap. For those of you who have direction indicators fitted to your Morgan, I have them on my F2, but, are not self cancelling, why not fit a pair of cheap audable 12v bleepers ( ebay less than £4.00) easy to wire them into each indicator circuit behind the dash. The sound will always alert you if you forget to cancel , mine work at treat, more like a swark than a beep, much easier on the ears. Don't forget drive it day in April organised by the VSCC, always a good day out with like minded people and friends, something not to be missed. Eric Bayley. Fri 3rd Apr. Black & White breakfast meet 10.00am. Fox & Hounds, Scorrier. Sat 4th Apr. Lands End Trial, Bishops Wood, Wadebridge. 9.00am Wed 8th Apr. VSCC, Lunch meet : 12 noon Hawkins Arms, Zelah. FAR SOUTH WEST The Good, the Great and the Oily attended the monthly natter where a multitude of topics, mostly non Morgan related, were discussed. As usual, the standard of debate was of a high intellectual calibre and, due to the orientation of the pub furniture, the meeting tended to be split into two groups, each with its own agenda. Thus, my own small section was

32

aroused from our celebration of the news of the proposed refurbishing of the final straight at Brooklands, to join a general, and more important discussion, over whether Brian Galbraith was Scottish or Irish! He eventually gave us the explanation as to how, despite bearing a Scottish surname, he was in fact Irish. Apparently, at some time in ancient history, the British decided to clear the Scots out of Scotland and ship them over to Ireland (Surely this brilliant idea could well prove a massive vote-winner in the coming election?). The intention was to get the Porridge eating gents to assist in cultivating potatoes. Due to their frugal nature, and the limited potato space in a sporran, most potatoes were planted in the North, where the Scots were landed, and this became "Protestant", from the old English meaning Potato". The Southern "Scottish-Irish", having a more catholic taste, abandoned porridge and turned their potatoes into Potcheen, thus creating the Great Irish Potato famine. Hence, according to Brian, today we have the Northern Irish with Scottish names, like Galbraith, who are Protestant and Southern Irish (Scots) with Irish names who are off their heads most of the time. I would like to thank him for clarifying that (I think!), and hope this may encourage some of you from other groups who enjoy a more erudite discourse to attend one of our meetings. Third Tuesday in the month. The Hunting Lodge, Lee Mill. Topic for discussion next meeting,-"How on earth does a Potato work as a condenser and which variety is best?"

Mike Goldring Third Tuesday in the month. The Hunting Lodge, Lee Mill. HERTS, BEDS AND BUCKS February meeting had been promised and was, a very nice sunny day with a good people turnout but hardly any Mogs. I was disappointed that the only Mog activity in the car park was the two 5 Speeders of Mike Jordan and Chris Hewitt. Certain of you may cry that your scribe is still in no position to comment until he regains three wheel transport himself, but there we go. (Who's writing this anyway?) However, it is encouraging to record that recently the temperature in my garage has

reached double figures above freezing for a few nanoseconds! I have also acquired some brilliant 14ply wooden boxes in which to store 'refurbished' Mog bits prior to assembly. These came care of a skip at my local Co-op. Just happened to notice them. (Sam Savage would be proud of me!) Anyway wood has good thermal insulating properties to combat the large, condensation inducing temperature swings experienced in said garage. It was a very pleasant surprise to see the fully 'up and running' Goo Boatwright driving his DKW and at the same time chauffeuring Don Stringer to our meet. Chris Hewitt's 5 Speeder is now also fully 'up and running' again (see above) after his earlier serious slow speed disagreement with a transit van! This apparently occurred on a blind bend in a sunken country lane in north- east Hertfordshire. Chris' offside front wheel met with the offside rear wheel of the Transit, the result of which slewed the Mog through 90 degrees across the road. Luckily Chris was not injured but his Mog was proper poorly and sustained a bent chassis at least! Insurance and Melvyn Rutter (local Morgan agent) subsequently sorted things out and full repairs were made. Now the Mog is resplendent with a new up-to-date 2014 chassis and the requested refine-ment of stiffer bevel-box mounting bushes. Regular passenger Dave Anderson is very pleased with the result and agrees the ride is smoother and much quieter. Chris will no doubt be only too pleased to give anyone a more accurate blow-by-blow account on request. Where are the Easter Bunnies? Will they be at Combe Mill on 12th April to see Your Mog? Angus Tozer. Next meeting Wednesday 15th April. 3rd Wednesday, every month, Noon. The Swan, Northall, Beds., LU6 2EY. LANCS and LAKES It didn’t look like there was going to be very much news this month but I was wrong again as two more Morgan trikes have arrived safely at their new homes in Lancashire during the last week! Chris and Ann (Harfield) have acquired another F4 kit of parts to add to their expanding F-type collection! This will form the basis for their new touring-modified class racer for next season (hopefully) so that they don’t have to keep thrashing Cadbury to death

in the standard class! Then, after long and patient searching for a vintage 3-wheeler to keep their 5-speeder company, Mike Smith has bought the nice Matchless MX2 Sports at Brightwell’s March sale when four Morgans were up for auction. (company for Roy Lund’s Matchless SS in East Lancs. at last). We have a busy month ahead with various Easter events, two Opening runs and the Night Trial to look forward to. Peter Pattinson and Bryan Rawlinson have finalised plans for our Opening Run on Sunday the 26th to the new South Lakes Museum of Speed. Please note that this time we will be setting off at 10:30 from Barton Grange nurseries, on the A6 just south of Garstang, rather than our usual meeting place at Huntley’s on the A59.

At least seven of us are going down to the club Opening Run at Combe Mill so fingers crossed that we get decent weather for that weekend and for the Night Trail & our opening Run weekend! Steve Hughes Thursday 16th April – group meeting at the Royal Oak, Garstang (eating from 6.30 pm) Saturday 25th April – Night Trial from Kelbrook village hall (between Colne and Skipton) Sunday 26th April – Opening Run – meet at Barton Grange Nurseries (A6) – leaving at 10:30

Stephen Clark Wed. 15th April, 8.00 pm. Six Bells, Chiddingly. Sun. 26th April, 10.00 am. Primrose Run, Bignor Roman Villa. SOUTH EAST Saturday 7th March was a notable evening for Colin Wilson. After no less than 50 years he was able to drive in his own three-wheeler Morgan to a Group meeting. Although he owns several three-wheeler Morgans they are all in various stages of disassembly except the 1937 Sports that he bought recently from John Lee, who is unfortunately now seriously unwell and no longer considers that he is up to driving. No doubt Colin will be fettling and improving the performance of his new steed but is obviously chuffed to bits now that he is able to drive one of his own Morgans. The annual SE Group Mogjumble was much better than last year’s event thanks to clear- outs by Jerry Rea (because he and Bronwen are moving to the west country shortly), and Brian Watts (who has decided that his many years of Morgan three-wheeler ownership from 2 speeders to an F Super are now over because he can no longer get into one.) Despite the absence of the contingent from the East Midlands Group and Paul Baker’s inimitable jokes, sense of humour and deep pockets, the event went off satisfactorily even though it took far longer than in previous years. Thanks are due to Dave Fripp, Don Taylor, Bob Towell, Glyn Chambers and Marion Booth for their efforts, and to all those members who brought along a wide selection of goodies which will no doubt be put to good use by their new owners. Sue Brown, Martin’s wife and who is known to many Club members, has undergone extensive surgery on both legs and one hip following an incident when one of her feet was damaged by a horse standing on it. We all wish Sue a speedy recovery. The Group meeting in May will feature a film show. Members should book it in their calendars now so they have no excuse to miss

this exciting evening. The GO is currently working on the job description for the post of usherette/ice cream seller to be followed by the unenviable task of interviewing the applicants. Members should also be reserving in their calendars the Norfolk Camping Weekend which is to be held at Stiffkey over the weekend of 10th-13th July, where another exciting time is to be had. More publicity will follow in later Group reports, but in the meantime if you want to know more you should contact:- Bob Wood - scenic runs and Norfolk co-ordinator – 0208 462 6466 Howard Andermahr – camping and tent space co-ordinator – 01494 862 762 Colin Harris – mobile home liaison officer – 01494 716 463 Jerry Rea – general liaison and latest info. on the event – e-mail [email protected] Duoika Future meetings: Sat. 4th April - The Swan, Horndon-on-the- Hill Wed. - 8th & 22nd April - informal mid-week meetings of the Wednesday Irregulars Sat. 2nd May – Film show at The Swan, Horndon-on-the-Hill SOUTH WEST Excellent turnouts continue with plenty of Morgans, their owners enjoying the sunny weather at the March meeting at Frampton-on-Severn. Too many to mention individually but from Herefordshire we had Dave Harman arrived in is lovely MX2 SS barrelback and Dave Winbow in his 4 wheeled Super Aero with special 60 degree a/c JAP. The invitation for 5-speeder owners in February's report was taken up by Steve Cook in his 64 reg. Morgan, resplendent in a delightful green similar to that used by Francis Beart on his racing Nortons and Aermacchis

WEST MIDLANDS A distressing number of local members have suffered ill-health recently, including our President and his First Lady. In a valiant attempt to cheer him up, a band of devoted volunteers have spent some considerable effort attempting to turn back the ravages of time on Alan’s Aero so that he is able to use it again. Unfortunately, this has proved to be something of a tall order and many of the thrice-recycled and much-abused parts are stubbornly refusing to provide yet more service in their intended role. This must, in some respects, be the ultimate eco-friendly vehicle as, rather than anything being scrapped and re-processed over the years, all its parts seem to have been cajoled into soldiering on well past the time that logic says they should have been deemed beyond use. The Opening Run on 12th April should be well within range of WM members and so I hope to see many of you at Combe Mill on the day. As mentioned last month, the VMCC Long Mountain Run will take place on the following Sunday, the 19th of April. The start is from the

Inn-on-the-Green Wentnor, Nr Bishops Castle, Shropshire SY9 5EF at 10.30a.m. Lunch can be booked there for the finish and I suggest you arrive early if you wish to indulge in the bacon or sausage sandwiches available at the start. In the past, a number of members have travelled long distances to sample the Shropshire scenery and, if you wish to make a weekend of it, I understand a limited number of rooms are available at the Inn on the Green with a double costing £60 for bed and breakfast. (For the really friendly, they also have a family room, which will sleep six, for a very reasonable £80). Finally, I am open to any suggestions for this year’s H.F.S. Run in mid-May. If you don’t use your Mog through the winter, I hope you have now thoroughly cleaned off the cobwebs and pumped up the tyres ready for a good season of driving. Nothing to do with the excellent attendance of 15, the brilliant and inspiring conversation etc., but because by the time I left the number of paid up reservations for the March Club Night ‘Christmas Do’ had swollen from 18 to 28. Seriously, thanks to all for your willing support and especially those who have promised prizes, are preparing quizzes and other activities – all legal I hope. Here’s to a good night!!!! The next event on our list is ‘The Donnington Historic Festival’ which will be held on May 2nd, 3rd and 4th. On bank holiday Monday (the 4th), we will have a designated area of grass inside the circuit for those who are Morgan mounted (tin tops will be relegated to the main car park). By quoting: THREEDHF15 when you book on line at: http://doningtonpark.seetickets.com/tour/donington-historic-festival/ you will get 2 for the price of 1 for 1, 2 or 3 day tickets –

there should be more information elsewhere in The Bulletin. All members are welcome and if you go on the 2nd or 3rd, thanks to Adrian’s contacts (perhaps there is something in this divine intervention thing – H), the Morgan 4 (shouldn’t that be 3+1) Wheeler Club will be pleased to welcome you to their turf. There will be a parade lap of the circuit at the end of the day – sadly not at racing speed!!! As the weather is beginning to look up, I expect an array of 2, 3, and 5 speeders of all variations to start appearing in the car park for you to feast your eyes on at meetings, and we are organising runs again.

Our next will be in June, to Tom Cowley’s Restoration Workshop, the original date has had to be changed as Donnington refused to change theirs. All details will be in The Bulletin next month. Oh! The February meeting. I can’t remember (what’s new! – H) much of the conversation but I’m sure Morgans even 3 wheeled ones must have cropped up now and then. Eric Eadon 14th April. - The Bay Horse, Scholes. M1, J35,

Chris van Wyk the Aus Mog agent, has, after 2-3 years finally got the new 5-Speed 3 wheeler through the Australian Design Rules - but had to crash test the vehicle a number of times, (I believe 3) and make many changes - I have sent 2 photographs - one showing new car with front end modifications and another of the board showing details of what he had to do. It all makes the vehicle look very different ! All this with the poor Australian dollar has also pushed up the price to around $100,000. The photograph of the car was taken at the Phillip Island classic car races last weekend.

the Articles of Association are unclear on

the constitution of the Club committee and

that as we have 59 oficers of the Club we

could have 59 possible club committee

members.

As part of the ongoing review,

proposals were presented to the meeting

to reorganize the committee to reduce its

size whilst still giving full representation

of groups and interests.

The committee were overwhelmingly in

favour of no change to the current

structure or size of the committee.

The committee voted in principle for the

post of Vice Chairman to be created.

At the previous committee meeting, the

issue of oficials having trader status was

raised. ( this is signiied by “T “ after the

name in published oficials list). This was

again discussed.

Tony Quinn offered to prepare a short

note on conlict of interest issue.

Pete Clews gave a report on slight ACU

licence changes and updated the meeting

on Zandvoort and Monthlery.

Other reports were received and the

dates of the next meetings were agreed as

Thursday 30th April and Sunday 5th July.

Questions, Questions in the March issue enquired how many 8-valve Anzani motors remain or are in use. M. Pierre de Josnes, East Anglia Group Organiser replied: Here is a photo of mine, up and running on my “210 * Mile Aero”. I obtained it from a Bonhams auction a couple of years ago (from Stan Thorpe’s estate). It had to be modified from its previous life in the skies. Runs well at a steady 2500 revs. and pulls like a train. *slightly better than the usual 200 Mile Aero.

Clearly, once the popularity of the new 5-Speeder MTW was established, it wasn’t going to be long before someone would produce a book about it. Would it be a sideways look by a non-owning but respected motoring journo or an incisive tome by a 5-speeder owning enthusiast. Here we have both. Intriguingly, (for me anyway), in this case, the author is Peter Dron and I immediately thought of Tony Dron who used to write for classic car monthly magazines, raced Porsches … and who looks

Mea Culpa again! Not a Good start to 2015! My year has suffered somewhat by my need to cease driving because of a problem with my sight , now rectified. This has meant that our Sports Family has been inactive for the whole year. However Alistair decided to give me a ride in it to The Gate at Brailes on the 27th where we joined with other club members for a lunchtime meal. Merry company, most enjoyable. A dozen of us. However, on the way back to Tadmarton, Alistair suddenly found that the “R” type box had a bunch of neutrals and coasted to a stop after coming through Swalcliffe. A quick look showed that the chain was still there. This left only one likely possibility - the bronze wheel had given up the ghost. The next day, we had very welcome visitors: Sue and George Darbyshire and Sue and Pete Clews. The two Sues went for a walk while George and Pete stripped the rear forks and trunnions and extracted a very sad, toothless Holroyd bronze gear. When I had replaced the original well-worn gears a few years ago, fitting a new Mogspares set, I had noticed the bronze gear had worn to the extent that the teeth were nearly sharp edged and that the worm wheel showed signs of overheating. As they were still clearly usable, I didn’t change them. The new Mogspares close-ratio gears were delightfully quiet but I found that the gear-box still seemed to ooze oil and although I usually kept a careful eye on the oil level. I should have rechecked it again but as I had not used it for a year or more, I surmised that it would have enough oil in it.

Obviously, though, it didn’t, so I suffered through my own carelessness. The “R” type box carries less oil than the later “D” box and must have the level maintained at 2 ½" above the floor of the box. Anything less is risky. (see Clarrie’s book on this) Bob Derricott sent a replacement Holroyd gear, studs and seals within 24 hours. George is going to ream the holes for the studs and I’ll reassemble it. I will feel safer with a new bronze gear, anyway. Sue and I don’t want to be stranded in Central Wales, where most of our touring is done. But I will check the gearbox oil level before each trip. The oil leak seems to be mainly through the input shaft particularly if the machine is parked facing downhill. Our touring is usually based on the Small-batch Camp site at the bottom of the Ashes Valley in Little Stretton. It is a serene place, has enough facilities and kindly owners. The stream running down the valley rises in the Long Mynd and access to the top of the My by car is from Church Stretton and a rather vertiginous climb above the Cardingmill Valley on the Burway Road, to above 1,600 ft. When ascending the hill, beware the twerps who don’t give way and force you to stop. Watercooled engines will be pretty close to boiling and you could find yourself in a cloud of steam. Favourite runs take us to Montgomery, The Bog Visitor Centre below the Stiperstones. These rocky outcrops are well worth a visit for the spectacular views.

Held over from February due to constraints on space. … Ed.

John Thomas Brian Watts

Quote: Everyone wants to live forever but nobody wants to be an old man. Another friend gone. I knew John for fifty years. Colin Wilson recently acquired Johns old Sports and was out in it at the March. In frequent use the Sports rarely did much more than 40mph. Someone asked John a technical question about the engine and John said he could not really remember as it had been12 years since he saw the inside of the MX fitted with air cooled barrels. One camping weekend I said that a photo-graph of his corner of the field would not have anything older than 1937. That would be: Morgan, wooden folding chairs, Primus paraffin stove, John and his weekend clothes. His dad had bought a white ridge tent from Army & Navy Supplies 1937. It was faulty so he sent it back. He got a refund of the purchase price of 37/6d (37 shillings and six-pence.£1.88p Another tent arrived. He sent

. There was a group of kids who came home on the train to the local station. Young John would shout "Now!" and another kid flush the toilet. When going home they would see if they had hit the level crossing dead centre. One day John dropped the toilet contents next to a railway worker standing at the side of the track. Not knowing it was only water the man

grabbed handfuls of grass and furiously brushed himself down. John wanted to be a car repairer doing mainly bodywork. So at around the age of 30 years he threw up the job at the bank and off he went. He became a professional pauper as he never charged enough. When a customer or friend appeared he would stop working and make a coffee and sit back for a chat.

One day he is chatting to his wife and they are talking about his friend who has moved to Cornwall. "I have always wanted to live in Cornwall" says John. "You are going" says Rosemary. They sold up in Essex and moved to Cornwall in one removal van for all house contents and two more for Johns collection of tools and Morgan junk. Later on John complained that all the cars he worked upon in Cornwall were heavily undersealed. …. ….that special green stuff found outside farm gates….

Wanted: Does anyone have pictures of an F4 during rebuild and specifically of the woodwork of the body without the sheet metal. There are plenty of pictures of complete F4s online, but hardly any without the sheet metal or taken during a rebuild. I have a 1936 F4, ANP 568 and from the picture (see below), you can see I am in dire need of a new body (the wooden box is what most of the F4 came in) Last summer I built a practice one out of pine to develop the technique using what I have as the starting point, words of wisdom from Nev Lear and the skills I learned when building the body for RV 9178 18 years ago. The two are quite different and before beginning this spring/summer on the final one, I am hoping there are a few members willing to share some of their F4 rebuild pictures with me via email. I remember when John Leavens sent me about 50 photographs (that was before email) of his complete Super Sports so I could see how it looked all together. That was a great help and a very useful reference throughout the rebuild. If you need any other information of have questions, comments, etc., please do not hesitate to contact me. For Sale, or Exchange 1927 Austin 12/4 for an F2 or F4: I am looking for an F2 or F4 and have for exchange an original unrestored 1927 Austin 12/4 Clifton Tourer with full weather equipment, hood, side screens and rear Auster screen. The car is the more desirable early model with carriage handles on the doors and the narrow Austin body. It is not mint but is in a very presentable condition and has been used for weddings and proms in the past. (see picture below) The car is very reliable, comfortable and a pleasure to drive. Starts first time, solid and very dependable. I have owned it for around 5 years and it has

attended several Lancs & Lakes runs/social events. The engine is a 4 cylinder 1861cc side valve with a 4 speed gate change gearbox (with reverse!), Sankey wheels and Watford magneto. I am looking to sell the car as it stands or exchange for an F2 or F4 that is of a similar standard to use and enjoy on club activities. I hope to become a full and active member of the club rather than an associate bystander or a grateful passenger in other members’ cars. If any member of the club would consider an exchange or purchase could they please get in touch to discuss. Steve Finch Tel: Home +44 (0)1772 611912 (after 6 pm) or Mobile:+44 (0)7971 663219

Following the success of the 5-Speeder and the new Aero launch at Geneva, demand has been identified for a more refined coupe threewheeler - much along the lines of the period F4. but with a roof. In similar fashion to the treatment of the Liberty Ace… rumours abound regarding the introduction of the F8 …. You saw it here first.

Following the success of the RAF themed 5-Speeder - an enclosed version - styled along the cockpit of a Mk XV verI.III. Spitfire has been designed. Also available for the true WW2 enthusiast is a Boulton and Paul Defiant model … see inset.
