“It is our main mission to build a nationthat is free from crime.

“We have not yet done enough to fulfill theneeds of disabled people, but we are on thejourney to becoming a better society,” hesaid.

He called on men to be the protectors ofwomen and children, saying they shouldfollow the example of species in the animal

kingdom whose males never became ag-gressive towards their female partners.

“Women and children deserve protectionfrom the men, and we cannot leave out therights of people with disabilities,” Makwet-la said.

He urged the inmates to change whenthey were released from prison and becomerole models in society.

Community members also had a chanceat the imbizo to ask questions and the rele-vant departments answered.

The event was attended by traditionalleaders, representatives from the depart-ments of Social Development and Correc-tional Services, and the community atlarge.

MTHATHA EXPRESS | THURSDAY 10 DECEMBER 2015 NEWS 5

REPORTER

A YOUNG Mthatha man has embarked on acycle journey in an effort to raise funds to putfood on the table for needy families affectedby the drought.

Siyasanga Dabula started cycling lastTuesday, asking for vouchers for aminimumof R1000. These vouchers will assist in pro-

viding families with food this Christmas.Dabula’s road trip is taking him from

Mthatha to Coffee Bay, via Corana, Lalini,Tukela, Mandlovini, Mdoni Mzamo, Mang-weni and Kundlunkulu.“These villages are subjected to high levels

of malnutrition and poor production in agri-culture,” he said.“And now with many regions being affect-

ed by the growing drought, there is a greatfear that theywill be sufferinga greater pain and there willbe an increase in the numberof households affected by pov-erty.“The reduction in farm

yields will lead to an increasein food prices and market vol-atility, which will then affectfood availability, accessibilityand stability,” Dabula said. With this initiative, Dabula

has aimed at helping and con-tributing to the betterment ofa minimum of 35 families.“Although many initiatives

will be also pursuing a projectthat is similar, I feel passion-ate about assisting those fami-lies that fall short of the oppor-tunity to be assisted,” he said.It is a first initiative forhim,

but Dabula is planning to con-tinue with it annually withthe purpose of giving back tothe poor during the festiveseason.

a thorough investigationbyExpress recently. Itwas discovered that the fire engines were dam-agedduringtheremovalof thetaxirankinfrontof the fire station almost three months ago, onSeptember 17.

During a confrontation, the taxi drivers andowners damaged the machines.“These machines were damaged and they

were never repaired,” said one of the employ-ees,whodidnotwant to be identified. “Mywor-ry is that homes are continuing to burn downwith no attempt to help, because we don’t havefire engines.“At the same time it is very far fromMthatha

caused damage.”It was also discovered that the tallest build-

ABOUTsixpercentof theSouthAfricanpopula-tion (3.5 million people) suffer from either type1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus and, according tothe2013reportonmortalityandcausesofdeath,diabetes is the fifth-highest cause of naturaldeaths in the country.National Diabetes Week was held from No-

vember12 to17 toraiseawarenesson the impor-tance of early diagnosis.Patientswith type 1diabeteswhoareon insu-

lin therapy need specific eating andmeal plansbased on their insulin treatment and blood glu-cose control. However, the disease process associatedwith

insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes can beslowedandevenpartially reversedby followinga healthy diet and lifestyle.Thenutrition informationcentre in the facul-

ty provided these dietary recommendations:

15dietary recommendations topreventandtreat diabetes1. The dietary guidelines for diabetic people

are based on the guidelines for healthy peoplewithout diabetes.Variety means eating different foods within

a meal, on different days and preparing food indifferenthealthyways.Thisensures thatourdi-et contains sufficient nutrients and that it ismore enjoyable.2. As little as five to 10%weight loss improves

insulin resistance, therefore overweight andobesediabeticsshouldbeadvisedto loseweight.3. Eat at least three balanced meals a day.4. Drink at least six to eight glasses of water

a day.5. Increase your fibre intake: eat wholewheat

bread instead of white bread; eat oats, oat bran,or wholewheat cereals, for example high-fibrecereal for breakfast; eat lots of vegetables andfruit; eat legumes regularly (peas, lentils, beansandsoya), and includebarley, samp, brownriceand wholewheat pasta in your diet.

6. Diabeticpatientsmaybenefit fromlow-GI/GL foods as long as they are incorporated intoa balanced diet, and the use of high-fat low-GIfooditemsandageneraldisregardofportionsiz-es is avoided.7. Limit your fat intake, especially saturated

and trans fats (animal fats, full-cream dairyproducts, chocolate, coconut, hard margarine,full-cream products, baked goods, for examplepies and cookies, andpalmoils, for example cof-fee creamers and artificial cream).Includemoremono-unsaturated fats in limit-

edamountsinyourdiet (forexample, usecanolaoil or olive oil instead of sunflower oil, spreadavocadoorpeanutbutter insteadofmargarine).8. Eatfishtwotothreetimesaweekandchick-

en more regularly than red meat.9. Small portions of meat can be eaten daily.

Replace meat more frequently with fish, chick-enand legumes (peas, beans, lentils andsoyandeggs). Polonies, viennas and sausages are nothealthy;rathereatbeans,eggs,nuts,peanutbut-ter or lentils.10. Eat at least five portions of fruit and vege-

tables every day. Avoid the consumption ofmore than 125ml fruit juice a day.11. Aim to eat or drink at least two cups of

milk, cottage cheese or yoghurt a day. Low fatis better as it has all the protein and calcium, but less fat.12. Follow the correct cooking methods: boil,

steam, bake/grill in the oven and braai overcoals, thus limiting the addition of any form offat during food preparation.13. Use small amounts of salt in food prepara-

tion and avoid the use of extra salt at the table.14. If you consume alcohol (beer and wine),

use it in moderate amounts (one to two glassesa day) and always with a meal.15.Manage your carbohydrate and sugar in-

take by limiting or avoiding cake, cold drinks, sweets, cookies, and sugar-sweetened dessertsand drinks (including alcohol).

AN outgoing councillor who served for 10years inWard19 inNgqelenihasbeenpraisedby the community for doing good work bybringing service delivery to the area.

Monwabisi Nomandela has said he will notbe standing in next year’s local elections.Residents of the ward gathered in the com-

munity hall to hear Nomandela report onwhat he had done and what he failed to

achieve in these 10 years.Resident Hudson Nobhijela said Noman-

dela had made their community the best be-cause all localities in the ward had electricityand other services.“We hope that the councillor who will fol-

low in his footsteps will do the same becausewe never heard of problems with him.“He managed to help orphans by donating

school shoes and uniforms to them so thatthey could be like other children,” Nobhijelasaid.

After Nomandela delivered his report, hehanded over school shoes to needy childrenas part of their Christmas presents. He said everyyear theydonated shoes to the

needy so that when they went to school theylooked like other children who were fromwealthier families.“We know that they are getting social

grants fromgovernment, but this doesnot sat-isfy their needs, since parents also use thegrants to maintain their families,” Noman-dela said.

He said that beingaward councillorhadnotbeen an easy task since he had faced a lot ofchallenges.Among them had been the supply of water

and the large number of orphans in his ward.He said they had also launched a special

programme in which Home Affairs officialsvisited the ward four times a year to help peo-ple with their identity documents.Nomandela said the councillor who would

follow him next year must not try to be himbut must do what is in his or her heart.
