Statement of the Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade Regarding Legislation in Albany That Authorizes a Medallion Sale 

and a Livery Street Hail Permit System  

 June 19, 2011  Mayor Bloomberg, TLC Commissioner David Yassky and Albany legislators have sold out the 50,000 New Yorkers who work in the taxi industry – for a money grab medallion sale and a shameless give‐away to illegal livery operators.  Shame on all of them.  This disgraceful and irresponsible bill will jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of hard‐working, mostly minority New Yorkers – individuals and small businesses alike – by devaluing the medallion and giving away their rights to those who have flouted the law, evaded taxes and regularly poached fares in Manhattan and the boroughs. The City is rewarding the law‐breakers and punishing the legitimate operators.   The yellow taxi industry has worked tirelessly on various proposals to effectuate better taxi and livery service citywide, even strongly supporting one of the Bloomberg Administration’s many plans.  But the Administration and David Yassky  turned their backs on the industry and has let down tens of thousands of hard‐working people.    Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos have the ability do the right thing and abandon this terrible bill.  We implore them to do so.  However, the yellow taxi industry will stop at nothing to fight and protect its hard‐earned exclusive right to pick up street hails – including any and all necessary action in the courts.     ##    Media Contact: Michael Woloz 646‐382‐7171 212‐437‐7373
