Brothers and sisters, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! I would like to invite all of you to attend our annual Charge Conference on October 30 at 3:00 p.m. Charge Conference is something akin to the annual business meeting of the congregation. At Charge Conference, we vote on incoming officers, approve the budget for the coming year, vote on updates and corrections to the member- ship roll, and handle various other items. Although only Church Council members can vote at Charge Conference, everyone has voice and many of you would find it interesting. One of the things that makes Charge Confer- ence interesting is the exposure we get to the work of other nearby congregations. Charge Conferences are usually held in clusters. When we gather on October 30, there will be four churches present: Mt. Zion UMC, Hollywood UMC, St. Matthews UMC, and Mt. Calvary UMC. For the first portion of the Conference, we will all gather together in one room. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Rebecca Iannicelli, will lead us in a conversation about how we walk our members down an intentional pathway of discipleship formation. For the second part of the conference, each church/charge will move to a separate room to conduct business. As I continue to meet with church members in small groups, there is one thing I’m hearing over and over again: “This church is my family.” This is always a wonderful thing to hear. But what makes it especially wonderful in this congregation is that people who have only recently joined are saying the same thing. That means we are doing a great job of adopt- ing new family members into the Body of Christ. Keep up the good work! Mt. Zion’s 2016 Vision: Building a Welcoming Community of faith centered on Jesus Christ that reaches beyond our walls.

Brothers and sisters,

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! I would like to invite all of you to attend our annual Charge Conference on October 30 at 3:00 p.m. Charge Conference is something akin to the annual business meeting of the congregation. At Charge Conference, we vote on incoming officers, approve the budget for the coming year, vote on updates and corrections to the member-ship roll, and handle various other items. When we gather on October 30, there will be four churches present: Mt. Zion UMC, Hollywood UMC, St. Matthews UMC, and Mt. Calvary UMC.

The Mt. Zion Music Ministry is off to a great

start this year. The Chancel Choir is already

stretching their wings to a variety of music

and styles. The group will be starting work

on our Christmas cantata Go Sing It on the

Mountain this month in preparation for our

Music Ministry Christmas Prism on Decem-

ber 17. As always, we are thankful for your

support of our ministry so we may continue to

prepare a diverse spectrum of music to glorify

His name.

Our Chancel Choir is growing as well, except

in our Tenor and Bass section. Even though

we have the best 5 Tenors and Basses, we

tend to feel alone compared to the Sopranos

and Altos. If you sing Tenor or Bass, do not

be afraid, come give Chancel Choir a try.

Singing IS good for your health. If you sing

Soprano or Alto and want to join, we will

welcome you with open arms. We strive to

help all members learn how to read music and

sing their part.

Karen Allen hosted a Handbell Workshop

here at Mt. Zion on Saturday September 17,

bringing 24 people from the Southern Mary-

land area together. Karen continues to demon-

strate exceptional leadership in teaching her

members how to read music and attain more

challenging music.

The Children’s Music Ministry has also gotten

off to a great start. Additionally, the Tone

Chimes have resumed practicing with several

new members. Beginning in October our chil-

dren’s music groups will share Sundays with

Tone Chimes playing at the 8:30 service while

Voices for Christ will sing at the 11:00 service.

They will alternate each time they play as they

did last year.

Lastly, our Praise Band continues to attract new

members. We have been practicing every week

all summer and throughout the year. The Praise

Band has found challenges in learning contem-

porary Christian music. Also, many of our

members are youth members which is providing

a great outlet for their interests. If you want to

come sing the songs you hear on the contempo-

rary Christian radio stations, come visit on Sun-

day at 6pm. Come see us play at the Youth

Group LipSync Battle on Saturday, October 8.

In February, we launched

our podcast service

where you can listen to

scriptures and sermons

that are up to 90 days

old. We upload new sermons every week.

Visit www.mtzionmech.org and click

“Sermons” in the top banner to access our pod-

casts. Soon we will be sharing our podcasts

through iTunes for members who wish to access

our scriptures and sermons through that service.

Questions about our Music Ministry, operat-ing the sound system or accessing the pod-cast services? Please contact Bryan Smith [email protected].

We are looking for youth who would like to

learn how to operate our sound system to

WORSHIP ARTS/WORSHIP COMMITTEES

The first meeting of the Worship Arts Commit-

tee was held on September 16th. We had a good

turnout of people with a variety of talents that

were immediately put to use.

First we had an overview presented by

Pastor Steve as to the purpose of the

committee. The overview was far

reaching with boundless creativity rul-

ing the day. Another short presentation

was made as to the available supplies at

hand. We have already had some craft

items and fabrics being donated by

church members. So if you have any

usable craft items that you no longer

have a use for, please let us know. Once

we took stock of what we had on hand,

we split into groups to develop ideas.

WOW! The creative juices started flow-

ing! So many ideas and so little time.

Rather than blanket the sanctuary at one

time with our ideas, we will begin in

mid-October phasing in the decorations as they

are completed. We hope to have everything in

place by the first week of November.

Our next meeting will be held on October 13,

6:30pm in the blue room. A group will be as-

sembling floral decorations for the windows.

If this is something you enjoy doing or want to

learn how to do, please join us! There is room

at the table for your creativity and talents.

The Worship Committee is

preparing for All Saints

Sunday. Please look for an

insert in the bulletin. You

can submit the name of a

family member or friend

who passed away October 1

2015-October 1, 2016.

These names will be read

during all 3 services. Please

provide contact information

of a family member since

some of those passing may

have family members not

listed in our Directory. An

address is preferred. We

will send letters to family

members to let them know

we will be remembering

and honoring their loved one. These letters will

be sent during the first week of October. Please

submit names of family members or friends who

passed away prior to the above dates. A booklet

of remembrance will be included in the All

Saints Sunday bulletin with their names.

Treasure … A Heart Transforming Journey

On Sunday, October 23rd, we will begin a church-wide study and worship emphasis called

Treasure: A Stewardship Program on Faith and Money. The study will be based on Jesus’ words,

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).

Over a period of four weeks, we will look at the many ways that our treasure (time, energy,

money) affects our hearts. We will consider how financial challenges in our personal lives affect

our relationships with people and with God. We will see how giving helps to determine the way

we feel and act. If you have stress related to money or feel there may be more that God is calling

you to do with your resources, this will be a helpful study.

At the end of the four weeks, we will have the opportunity to make

personal commitments of giving to Mt. Zion for the coming year.

All of us will receive commitment cards in the mail, and the cards

will also be available on Sunday mornings. We can fill out these

cards and bring them to worship on Sunday, November 13th.

We look forward to an exciting few weeks of considering our

treasure and God’s treasure.

Schedule for the Treasure series

Week 1: Where Is Your Treasure? (Matthew 6:19-21)

Week 2: The Problem with Two Masters (Matthew 6:24)

Week 3: Giving Your Treasure Back to God (Matthew 6:1-6)

Week 4: Don’t Worry ’Bout a Thing (Matthew 6:25-34)

The Zella’s Stewards class and the new Young Adults class will be

offering this study during their 9:45 am class time. An evening

class will be offered during the High School Youth Group time.

Everyone is welcome to join this class. Treasure, is designed to

engage your head, heart, and hands. Sign up now so we can secure

space and teachers for this heart transforming journey.

Sign-up sheets can be found on the bulletin board

outside the high school youth room.

Child Evangelism Fellowship Child Evangelism Fellowship is the World's

largest mission agency to children. In an

average year, CEF reaches over 12.1 million

children in every state and around the world!

Together, we are working to bring the Word of

God to unchurched children that live in Calvert,

Charles, and St Mary's Counties.

CEF volunteers from local churches were able

to provide Good News Clubs at 5 Southern

Maryland schools, reaching 315 children during

the last school year.

bring the Good News Club to

Mechanicsville Elementary.

The Good News Club will be held

on Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5:15

October 26th.

Most of the GNC team members do not need to

teach or speak in front of the club, just help out

with attendance, check in-out etc.

Please consider joining us on our mission to

bring the simple message of salvation to the

children.

Mustang Store needs our help!

Mechanicsville Elementary School reinforces

positive student behavior by providing their

students “Mustang Bucks” for good behavior.

Students can redeem their bucks at the Mustang

Store buying small items.

Donations are needed for the for the Mustang

elementary school students would enjoy as

rewards for good behavior. Items should not be

edible in nature. Gently used toys and new

items are appreciated. A plastic bin for the

Wanted:

Adults to listen to young readers A handful of adults are needed to

listen to young readers at Mechan-

icsville Elementary. Volunteers

will need to go through the school

safety and security screening,

which can be completed online.

The school will provide basic read-

ing tutor training for volunteers.

volved in the lives of children and have an hour

or two to

volunteer each week, please consider joining in

this ministry.

Fall session of Sunday school is in full swing! A Big shout out and

Thank You to all those who helped with Summer Sunday school.

A few Friendly Reminders for Sunday School

Please make sure you have filled out a 2016/2107 registration form for this year for

each of your children. These must be updated every year due to important info that

might have changed since last year.

When bringing your children to S.S. Please Do Not drop your child off before 9:40. A

few of our teachers attend the 8:30 service and are not in their classrooms until then.

We ask that parents also pick up their children promptly at 10:45. A few teachers at-

tend the 11:00 service & they also have to clean up the rooms. We would like them to

be able to get to the church on time.

Thank You for your cooperation & understanding : ) God Bless

“Coins for Caring” Children’s Giving Ministry Being generous with our Blessings is an important part of our children’s faith journey. There

is no amount too small when given by a child. The spare changes they bring in as an offering

is a simple act that teaches them to give to others just as Jesus would like us to do. The chil-

dren love to put their coins into the “coins for caring” wishing well ! The coins are used to

help people in many ways including the food pantry at Mt. Zion. Encourage your children to

be a part of the giving : )

TRICK OR TREAT FOR THE HUNGRY TEAM AT MT. ZION Children 4 years-5th grade are invited to Trick or Treat for Non-Perishable

Next up is the Annual Chicken BBQ and Fall

Festival. We are thrilled this year to have the

Youth join us with a Fall Festival. They will

offer pumpkins for purchase, face painting,

games, crafts and more for your family enjoy-

ment. Proceeds benefit the Youth Ministries.

The Girl Scouts will offer their delicious bake

goods. They spend hours preparing their

Proceeds benefit the Girl Scouts. Mark your

I almost forgot about the pie eating contest at

the car show, our own Eddie Davis won. He

enjoyed a fresh homemade apple pie provided

by the Mennonite Ladies. The ice cream con-

test was won by Devin Little.

Speaking of ice cream ...

The Ice Cream Prayer, Author Unknown

Last week I took my children to a restaurant.

My six year old son asked if he could say

grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God

is good. God is great. Thank you for the food,

and I would even thank you more, if Mom gets

us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and

Justice for all. Amen! Along with the laughter

from the other customers nearby I heard a

woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with

this country. Kids today don’t even know how

to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I

never!” Hearing this, my son burst into tears

and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God

mad at me?” As I held him and assured him

that he had done a terrific job and God was

certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman

approached the table. He winked at my son

and said, “I happen to know that God thought

that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my son

asked. “Cross my heart.” Then in a theatrical

whisper he added, “Too bad she never asks

God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good

for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought

my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My

son stared at his for a moment and then did

something I will remember the rest of my life.

He picked up his sundae and without a word

walked over and placed it in front of the wom-

an. With a big smile he told her, “Here, this is

for you. Ice cream is good for the soul some-

times, and my soul is good already.”

National Anthem.

The United Methodist Women Circle of Friends held our monthly meeting for Septem-ber on the 10th in the blue room of the Family Life Center. We had seventeen members in attendance. Our meeting began at 7am instead of our regular time of 7:30am. We completed our business meeting by 7:30 at which time Pastor Steve joined us for a meal of breakfast casseroles, biscuits, fruit and pastry.

After our meal, Pastor Steve led us in a small group meeting to help him get acquainted with our members. We each shared information about who we are and where we came from. He is interested in our experiences and vision for Mt. Zion. The gathering was very informa-tive. We even learned new things about each other. Thank you, Pastor Steve for your time and interest.

After our meeting we prepared for our bake sale which we held during the UMM 4th Annual Car Show. We were glad to be inside because it was really hot outside. No rain, Praise God! I want to thank everyone who baked and worked. I can always depend on the tireless generosity of our ladies. A big thank you to everyone who pur-chased our homemade goodies.

On Tuesday August 30th, we made our third visit to the Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home for our monthly sing-a-long with the veterans. There were 27 veterans in attendance and seven of our members joined them in song. Lucy Crabtree was gracious enough to lead us in Trish's absence and Karen Allen accompanied us on the piano. We all sang, clapped and

laughed, one gentleman even had tears in his eyes. Please feel free to join us even if you don't belong to our COF. Our next sing-a-long is on October 18th. at 2pm.

On Friday the 2nd and Saturday the 3rd of Sep-tember, we attended the Hungry Team Yard Sale and sold hot dogs, chips, sodas and baked goods. I again want to thank the ladies for all of the delicious baked goods. I especially want to thank Priscilla and Marilyn who worked in the kitchen with me both days. We did very well and will put our proceeds to use in our mis-sions.

I want to catch all the early Christmas shoppers. We still have prayer cubes available. They would make great stocking stuffers and will enhance the prayer lives of your children and grand-children.

We are giving our ovens a rest for a bit but will soon be preparing for our luminaries for the Christmas Eve services. We will be having our Stone Soup Sundays in January and February. They were a great success last year, and we hope you will join us in 2017!

May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you, may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24-26)

God Bless you all, Carolyn Ayers COF President

We are all looking forward to our Bazaar on November 12. This is our biggest fundrais-er of the year. All proceeds will be donated with children’s needs first. Pat Steiber is in charge of the Bazaar. She already has 21 vendors who will attend and hopefully there are some who haven’t responded as yet. This is a very special Bazaar as it has many wonderful ieas for Christmas giving. Also as you shop you can enjoy a lovely bake ta-ble and enjoy a bowl of delicious home-made soups.

Our next meeting will be on October 11 in the blue room at 11:00. Please join us and learn more about Sarah Circle. We will have a pot luck luncheon and Pastor Steve will be our guest. Please join us.

In God’s Love, Marion Houser, President

Worship Arts/Worship Committees

The Worship Committee is seeking information

from anyone knowing of a reliable metal re-

plating company located either in Maryland or

the tri-state area. We want to re-

plate the brass cross and candle-

sticks on the altar. The set was

donated and inscribed back in

the mid-fifties. Re-plating will

accomplish two things: preserve

a part of our history and provide

a newer, non-tarnish/no finger-

print finish. Once we learn of a

company(s), get an estimate, we

will send them to get the job

done. So look for the cross and

candlesticks to “disappear” for

an unknown period of time. We

will be using temporary candles

and candlesticks during the interim.

During November the Worship Committee will

be providing decorative collection crates for

canned goods, boxed dinners, and cereals to

help the Hungry Team stock the food pantry.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around

the corner, this is a good time to help the Hun-

gry Team help the less fortunate.

Mark your calendars for the “HANGING OF

THE GREENS” on Saturday, November 26 at

9:30am. Donuts juice and coffee will be provid-

ed and then we roll up our sleeves! But before

we can do that, we need a “Black Friday Crew”

to get all the

decorations out

of the shed, the

Chrismon trees

set up in the

sanctuary and

fellowship hall.

So if shopping

on this day is

not our thing,

maybe this will

fill the bill.

Each year we

have different

numbers of people come out to help. With

enough people, this job takes about an hour of

your time. Please let me know if you or your

group is available.
