Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church “To Know Christ and Make Him Known”
An Encouraging Word
Volume 22, Issue 4
July, August, 2018
—Continued on page 2
A big story hit the sports world on June 14, 2018.
The CBS Sports website shared the details that
got the attention of many TV sports broadcasters. A
French middle school basketball player is dominat-
ing games played on courts with the eight foot rims that are the standard
height for that age. His name is Oliver Rioux. He’s 12 years old and stands
six foot ten inches tall! He’s two foot taller than most of his fellow players!
That is big news!
News about giant-sized people catch our attention. We’re fascinated by
stories about tall people. We can’t seem to get enough information about
them. Even details about tall people that lived in Old Testament times leave
us wanting to know more. Genesis 6, Ezekiel 32:27 and Numbers 13:33 tell
us about the Nephilim a race of giant people who were the product of di-
vine beings (thought to have been fallen angels) having relations with hu-
man women. And who hasn’t heard about David, a young Jewish boy, who
did battle with the giant Goliath? Stories about
these giants fascinate us. Giants are formidable
and they seemingly are guaranteed victory.
I guess that’s why our fascination with giants
often turns to fear when we consider facing the
ones that tower over our lives. Fear is the common
human response when confronting formidable
things that threaten our lives. The Old Testament
book of Numbers chapters 13 and 14 record the
reaction of the Israelites when their military scouts
first checked-out the land God gave them to inhab-
it and they encountered giants. Basically, they told
God that they couldn’t live there. “We saw the Ne-
philim there. We seemed like grasshoppers in our
own eyes, and we looked the same to them”

E ven though summer is in full gear, we are still continu-
ing to collect items for energy packs sent home with
elementary children in need. We want to keep the support
coming throughout the summer because it helps so much
once the school year begins again. Any items you wish to
donate can be placed in the receptacle in the Narthex. If any-
one is interested in helping with this ministry in other ways,
please see Sandra Kirk or Tina Schram. Thank you!
July Item of the Month: chicken noodle soup
August Item of the Month: granola bars
(Numbers 13:33). The Israelites compared their power to the power of the giants they saw
and they gave up. Don’t we tend to do the same thing when we encounter the giants of fear,
discouragement, loneliness, worry and the like? During threatening times like these, fol-
lowers of Jesus tend to forget what the Israelites forgot. The Lord is with us so do not be
afraid of the giants! The Lord is bigger than any giant we face! David experienced this
when he faced the giant Goliath and defeated him. That’s why years later David described
what he had learned about giants by using the following words in the 23rd Psalm, “Even
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You (God)
are with me…”
David learned that he didn’t have to fear giants. He could defeat them because the Lord
was with him! And we can defeat them too! Sunday, August 5th we’ll begin to take a look
at how the Lord can help us defeat the giants in our lives. I think you’ll agree, this is the
really big news! —Pastor Mike

Youth Summer Serve
T his summer, Mt Nebo youth are working together to reach out to others and share the love of Christ. The summer focus is service- learning more about Christ by doing what he calls
each of us to do—Serve.
Youth Summer Serve began June 12th, when they, along with 4 adult chaperones, worked at Matthew 25 Ministries. The youth and adults helped with the paint mission of Matthew 25 Minis-tries.
A team of high schoolers and middle school youth spent the week helping at Mt Nebo VBS- Several high school youth worked with adults as paddle crew leaders for a class group, were part of the drama team for the Bible Story, and ran the video and sound for the opening and closing each day. Middle school youth were the actors for the Bible sto-ry rotation and helped small groups do the activities following the story. One of our youth was the puppeteer for the week, giving life to the Riv-er Otter mascot for the week.
On June 26th a team of 14 youth and 5 adults organized and hosted carnival games and activities for Joni and Friends family retreat at Shawnee State Lodge. Joni and Friends is an international ministry that helps meet the needs of persons with disabilities and their families. While many of our youth may not have experience working with children with disabili-ties, they lacked nothing when working with these families to show the love of Christ.
Youth Summer Serve will continue through July with another opportunity to serve at Matthew 25 Ministries and working with our community for the Backpack giveaway.

Rolling River Rampage VBS 2018
June 18—22
T hroughout the week over eighty chil-
dren learned ways to experience a ride
of a lifetime with God. On the ‘river of life,
they learned acceptance on the river, adven-
ture on the river, joy on the river, peace on
the river, and rest on the river. Each day
highlighted an encounter someone had with
Jesus—calling the disciples, accepting Mary
and Martha, walking with Zacchaeus, the
Last Supper, and the Great Commission. Bi-
ble story, music, snack, craft, science, and
games all helped the children gain a greater
understanding of each Bible story and what
it means for them.
Watch for date and details for
the 2019 VBS at Mt Nebo!
God Called Many to Serve at VBS
T here were nearly 40 adults and
youth who helped in a ‘hands on’
way to make this year’s VBS a great expe-
rience for the children. I am grateful for
all they did and the love they shared.
People served at VBS for many reasons,
but one thing I know for sure, the time,
love, and commitment they showed as
they worked with the children displayed
the love of God in real ways. We are not
always sure what God is doing, but we
know His mighty power was working
wonders in the lives of the children at
VBS as well as touching their families’
lives. These adults and youth served be-
cause that is where God called them to be
- they are seed planters of the Gospel,
getting the soil of the children’s hearts
ready to open up to God.
If you would like to make a difference for
Jesus in the lives of children at Mt Nebo
and would like to help in some way with
children’s or youth ministry, I would
love to share the opportunities with you!

Pearls Of Wisdom
H erb Caen said, “A man begins cutting his
wisdom teeth the first time he bites off more
than he can chew”. Though his tongue may have
been planted firmly in his cheek, right next to said
wisdom teeth, we do indeed learn from our mis-
takes — including the mistake of thinking we can
handle more than we can, or that we know more than we do, or that we don’t need
anyone’s help (including God’s).
As far back as Old Testament times, people collected “wisdom sayings” into
books from which we can still learn. Foundational to the book of Proverbs attribut-
ed to King Solomon, is this first nugget of wisdom: “The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of knowledge” (1:7).
May we cut the “wisdom teeth” of our lives not by foolishly overestimation our-
selves but by following God.

Preaching
O ne Sunday a farmer went to church.
When he entered, he saw that he and
the preacher were the only ones present.
The preacher asked the farmer if he wanted
him to go ahead and preach. The farmer
said, “I’m not too smart, but if I went to
feed my cattle and only one showed up I’d
feed him.” So the minister began his ser-
mon.
One hour passed, then two hours, then
two and a half hours. The preacher finally
finished and came down to ask the farmer
how he had liked the sermon.
The farmer answered slowly, “I’m not too
smart, but if I went to feed my cattle and
only one showed up, I sure wouldn’t feed
him all the hay.”
Sacred
T he minister’s new secretary, a former
worker in the Pentagon, was busily
reorganizing her boss’s filing system. She
labeled one drawer “Sacred” and the other
“Top Sacred.”
Temptation “Opportunity knocks only once,” one
preacher warned his flock, “but temptation
bangs on your door for years.”
Usher
T he retiring usher was instructing his
youthful successor in the details of his
office. “And remember, we have nothing but
good, kind Christians in this church—until
you try to put someone else in their pew.”
