Medford residents Frank andJane Sharp moved to South Jer-sey last year. As they became ac-quainted with the region, theyfound one small problem.

There was nowhere in SouthJersey where they could partakein their favorite activity, curling.

We live on a lake, Jane said.Last winter, we were curling onthe lake with flower pots andwhatever else we could find.

This predicament led to thepair creating the JerseyPinelands Curling Club, the firstorganized curling league in SouthJersey. The club has been gather-ing on Tuesday nights this sum-mer at the Igloo Ice Rink in Mt.Laurel. Experienced membersgive a short lesson to newcomersto the game before everyonebreaks off into teams to play

matches.Bringing the club to fruition in-volved a bit of legwork. TheSharps talked to multiple icerinks in the area to see whowould want to host a curlingleague. After talking with man-agement at the Igloo, there was noquestion where they would behosting their club.

The Igloo was definitely themost interested, Jane said.

The Sharps first became inter-ested in curling after watching itduring the 2010 Winter Olympics.

They used this years WinterGames as a springboard to get

new members. It has worked, asthe club now has 30 full-timemembers and six substitutes whofill-in from time to time.

The members include a mix of experienced curlers and newcom-ers to the game. Deptford residentLeslie Gray had been curling for anumber of years. Previously, shewas forced to drive near King of Prussia to play. Now, her drive ismuch shorter.

I love my Philly people, butthis is a lot closer for me, shesaid.

Gray has provided a helpinghand to players such as MichelleBade and Debbie Kingsland whoare new to the game. The pair be-came interested in the sport afterseeing it during the Olympics.

There was an open house (inSouth Plainfield), but we werentable to get in, Kingsland said.

The pair got involved with theJersey Pinelands Curling Club

after attending a Learn to Curlclass, which is held once a monthas an instructional session foranyone who wants to join.

Frank said the classes havehelped bring in more members asthe weather has turned warmer. After a beginner attends one of the classes, they are invited to

MIKE MONOSTRA/The SunAn intense match took place during a Jersey Pinelands Curling Club session last week. Chris Bucci andRyan Van Natten try to land their rock in the house as Andrew Ward looks on. The club gathers once aweek to face off in league play at The Igloo Ice Rink in Mt. Laurel. After setting up the rink and engagingin a 30-minute practice session, members break up into teams and face off in match play.

Mt. Laurel Fire District No. 1will be able to make a series of fa-cility improvements to its threefirehouses after voters passed abond referendum during a specialelection on July 10.

In the unofficial results re-leased by the district, 70.5 percentof voters were in favor of the pro-

posed $2.95 million bond. As a re-sult, a Mt. Laurel homeownerwith the average assessed homeof $236,952 will see an annual in-crease of about $8.60 in their firedistrict taxes. The amount isbased on current interest rates.

Deputy Chief Christopher Bur-nett said the fire houses were inneed of these repairs, and carefulplanning was done to make suretaxpayers weren't too negatively

impacted. In February, voterspassed a budget reducing taxes by$15.94 for the average assessedhome.

The district was able to savemoney in certain areas and cutthe 2014 budget by about $500,000,resulting in some taxpayer sav-ings.

Burnett said this was donewith the realization of a bond ref-erendum coming up.

All the bond money is focusedon maintaining the districtsthree firehouses. More than 35percent of the money is going to-ward roof replacement.

Were having a number of is-sues with roof leaks, aging roofsand large ticket items that need tobe addressed, Burnett said.

The district narrowed its list of improvements to the most impor-tant items after conducting a full

walk-through of its facilities ear-lier this year. The district re-ceived estimates on each of theprojects before going forwardwith the referendum.

We compiled a list (of proj-ects), Burnett said. It is muchlarger than what we presented tothe public. We scaled down thelist. We wanted to make sure wedid our due diligence so we can dothe best job possible.

Very few people voted. Only 431total ballots were submitted, of them 190 were absentee.

A lack of voters is nothing newto fire district elections. Only 506votes were cast during the dis-trict's regular election in Febru-ary.

Burnett said the district did itsbest to make the public aware of

ts hard to believe, but just lastweek, we saw the first back-to-school advertisement on TV. It took

us by surprise. Oh, no, we thought, did we sleep through all of July?

Of course we didnt; its just storestrying to get ahead of the game and

boosting sales in a traditionally downmonth.

It got us thinking, though: We havebeen presenting back-to-school cover-age in The Sun for quite awhile now, inmany different towns, but how can wemake this coverage better?

Our quick answer by being betterprepared.

So, even though the beginning of thenext school year is the last thing onyour mind here in mid-July, were ask-ing that you put it at the forefront of your brain or at least in part of yourbrain for a few moments.

What will be different about thisschool year?

Were going to find out. Right now,our reporters are compiling lists of

questions for school leaders about thenew school year.

Are there new classes students andparents need to know about?

How about scheduling changes? Was any work done at the schools

over the summer?Generally, well be asking school

leaders to tell us about things thatyou parents, taxpayers and students need to know before the 2014-15 schoolyear begins.

Then, we will pass that informationalong to you.

Do you have any questions youd likeour reporters to ask? If so, the time toact is now. The more questions we getfrom you, the better prepared we canbe, and the better information we can

pass along to you.Maybe you are concerned about the

budget (who isnt?). Or maybe youveheard about a new program that youthink might be ideal for your child. Orperhaps you are wondering about re-pairs that were scheduled for your

childs school.Wed love to get those questions from

you. Just send an email to us so that wecan include them on our lists.

Most school districts have done a lotin recent years to be more responsiveto questions submitted by the public. Itmakes sense. Everyone wants to havegreat schools. Everyone wants to keeptaxes as low as possible, while still pro-viding great service. One of the bestways to achieve these goals is to build atrue public-private partnership be-tween schools and the communitiesthey serve. And building that relation-ship starts with effective communica-tion.

So send us your questions. Well doour best to get answers.

Ready for school?Of course youre not, but theres n o bette r time to prepare than now

Any questions? We are tracking down school leaders toask them questions about the upcomingschool year. So whats on your mind?Send us your questions, and well do ourbest to get answers.
