iFly, an indoor skydiving com-pany, will have to wait a littlelonger before it can take flight inMt. Laurel.

Council tabled an ordinance toamend the RA3 zone of the Fel-lowship area redevelopment planat last week’s meeting. Theamended plan included site stan-dards so iFly, an indoor skydivingcompany, would be able to devel-op on a parcel of land along Route73 near Beaver Avenue. Laurel

Capital Group owns most of theproperty in the RA3 zone.

The ordinance was tabled aftercouncil and residents spoke outwith concerns about the plan.Barbara Casey, an attor ney repre-senting Laurel Capital Group, and council acknowledged theyagreed on many of the site stan-dards, but there were still a fewunanswered questions.

    One large issue revolved

around the building’s signage.iFly proposed having signs onthree sides of the building. Theonly side a sign would not be onwas the side facing nearby resi-dential homes.

James Miller, the planner forthe site, said the signs would bebacklit LEDs located on the build-ing itself. There would be no freestanding signs.

“The signs are large enoughthat they can be seen from sub-stantial distances,” he said.

Mayor Irwin Edelson ex-pressed doubt about the plan, say-

ing iFly may not be able to put asign on the side of the buildingfacing I-295.

Leonard Pezza, a resident fromOregon Avenue near the proposedsite, said the building height of 60feet combined with the sign willbe an eyesore for area residents, even with trees planted betweenresidences and the site.

“That’s going to be much high-er than my house,” he said.

The other major complaint re-volved around traffic. Many resi-dents felt Beaver Avenue wouldstill be used as a through street toRoute 73, even with ordinancesprohibiting traffic from cuttingthrough the neighborhoods.

“Even if you tell people theycan’t come a certain way, there’susually traffic that tries to cir-

cumvent that,” Oregon Avenueresident David Jimenez said.

The traffic situation is nothingnew to the township. Traffic wasone of the biggest concerns whenthe redevelopment plan was ap-proved for the first two zones, where a Walmart and LifetimeFitness are under construction.

Part of the proposed plan in-cludes access to the iFly site fromRoute 73. The state highwaywould be used as the entranceand exit for the public.

Chester Schwartz, a represen-tative from iFly, added the facilityhas a maximum capacity of 24guests per hour, so it would notadd too much traffic itself.

“The number of people and thetraffic is very small,” he said.

However, Councilman JimKeenan still felt Beaver Avenuewas an issue, saying other busi-nesses could eventually move intothe proposed site. He proposedcompletely cutting off access toRoute 73 from Beaver Avenue.

“Maybe we can vacate Beaverand have emergency access only,”Keenan said.

A number of residents spokeout with questions about the useof the site. Virginia Vassey saidshe moved from Cherry Hill toMt. Laurel to get away from devel-

opment and was dismayed anoth-er parcel of open land is going tobe built upon.

Resident Donald Dennis wasconcerned about iFly’s businessmodel. He was worried the busi-ness may move out shortly afteropening.

“We don’t want to have a facili-ty come in and two years later bevacant,” he said.

After tabling the ordinance, council reiterated it is interestedin developing the property andbringing iFly to Mt. Laurel, butwants development to occur prop-erly. Edelson said council is hop-ing to take a look at a revised planas soon as possible.

After more than a decade of relying onother towns’ police K-9 units, the Mt. Lau-rel Police Department is looking at bring-ing a K-9 unit back to the township.

Mt. Laurel Police Chief Dennis Cribbenproposed a plan to township council at lastweek’s meeting to bring a police K-9 backinto the force. The police department hasnot had a K-9 since 2001.

Cribben said a Mt. Laurel police officerrecently purchased a Germen Shepherdand has begun training him in the K-9 po-lice academy. The hope is for the dog to jointhe Mt. Laurel Police Department later thisyear.

“The officer has offered to donate thisdog,” Cribben said.

    Cribben’s proposal would reinstitute the

K-9 program at very little cost to the tax-payer. He asked council to approve the cre-ation of a trust fund allowing the programto be paid for through fundraising. Thefundraising would allow the program tohave very little impact on the police depart-

ment’s budget. In the last 14 years since the police de-

partment last had a K-9 officer, the policedepartment has been forced to rely on otherdepartments for K-9 services. When a K-9 isneeded for a job, Mt. Laurel Police have re-ceived assistance from Evesham, Medford,

Cherry Hill, Lumberton and Cinnaminson. The police department uses K-9 units for jobs such as searching for a criminal sus-pect who may have run from the scene of acrime, a narcotics investigation or a searchfor a missing person.

Last year, Cribben said the police depart-ment requested a K-9 from another policedepartment 49 times. With Mt. Laurelforced to rely on other municipalities’units, it could take some time before theycan respond. A few times, a K-9 unit wasnot available to assist.

“By the time we’ve gotten the K-9 out

there, a criminal could be far from thescene,” Cribben said. “The time delayswe’ve experienced are really hindering ourservice.”

The police department could receive as-sistance in addition to fundraising. Con-

cord Pet Supplies has offered to provide thedepartment with food and other suppliesfor the program. The Mt. Laurel AnimalHospital has also offered assistance for thedog’s health care.

Council and residents in attendance atlast week’s council meeting were very sup-

portive of the plan and applauded at theconclusion of Cribben’s presentation.Long-time resident Frank Juliano feltbringing back the K-9 unit would be a hugebenefit to the township.

“I really like the idea of a dog,” he said.“Even if it saves just one life.”

Council plans to have a resolution imple-menting the trust fund as soon as April. If approved, the K-9 could join the policeforce as soon as August.

“Our goal is by Sept. 1 to have the dog ac-tively working and doing a demonstrationat Fall Festival,” Cribben said.

The police department is hoping the in-stallation of one K-9 will just be the begin-ning for the department. Cribben wants thetown to have a unit for many years to come.

“I’m hoping one dog will turn into multi-ple dogs,” Cribben said.

Ok, so the survey in question –

“the Best and Worst States to

    Retire,” compiled by

    Bankrate.com – didn’t exactly find

that you’d be out of your mind to re-

tire in New Jersey, but it did rank the

Garden State near the bottom of the

list of desirable places to spend the lat-ter portion of your life.

This should not be a shock.

The survey ranks New Jersey 45th

on the list of best places to retire,

based on the fact that the cost of living

is high (45th), the community well

being is low (43rd) and the tax rate is

very high (49th). These factors out-

weight the low crime rate (eighth) andthe above-average weather and health-

    care quality.

There’s a reason why so many New

    Jerseyans retire elsewhere – it’s

cheaper. And cheaper is better, be-

cause most people would rather see

    their hard-earned money go toward

    vacations than taxes, for example.

Many retirees go to Florida not just for

the weather but for the absence of a

    state income tax.

Maybe if New Jersey was more af-

    fordable, more elderly residents would

stay at home, near their friends and

family. But since it’s not, many don’t.

We are probably not the only oneswho laughed when we pondered where

in New Jersey – other than, say, a

beach town such as Ocean City –

would be a “good” place to retire. And

that’s a shame, and a problem all at the

    same time.

Our residents shouldn’t have to pre-

pare to leave when they retire.

    in our opinion

Want to retire in New Jersey? You must be out of your mind, survey says

    Your thoughts

Do you plan to retire in New Jersey?Share your thoughts on this, and othertopics, through a letter to the editor.
