Chairperson’s Report I am currently on holidays in China where I only have to put up with North Korea in the north east, bird flu in the south east, earthquakes in the south west, and dust storms in the northwest and cold weather. The Land of droughts and flooding rains doesn’t look too bad but it is nice to get away from the problems of the club and have a relaxing holiday. Congratulations to the lady bowlers in the Ladies District Singles. We had three ladies in the semi-finals and they came first, second and equal third. Chris Baxter was first, Deb Logan was second and Lyn Ford was third. The Ladies offered the other finalist a transfer to Mt Gravatt but she declined. With the covered green, we are progressing slowly with the repairs. We are obtaining a second quote for the green repairs. Our major problem is trying to find a time spot which doesn’t clash with Ladies and Men’s Pennants and club competition and suits the contractor’s timetable. Be assured that we have not forgotten about it but Christ mas is looking good for the work. We are proposing to have a member’s night at the club on the first Friday of each month. There will be a bowlers table booked and members can contact the club and book under it. Spouses and sweethearts are quite welcome. Just make sure that you don’t bring both of them on the same night. More details will be provided on my return from holidays. Some of the players of Super Challenge were questioning the chances of sharing in the prize money. We are looking at a team funded by the players themselves. They pay entry fee, player’s registration fee, green fees, travel funds etc. The club will not provide any contribution towards the cost. Any prize money will be distributed to the members participating in that team. More details will be provided later. Any members interested are to contact John Fealy or myself. Report - Men’s President At this stage we have not had any volunteers to take on the Position of Games Director. So in the interim both John Fealy and I are sharing the role. Please feel free to nominate for the position of Games Director at the next Club AGM. Men’s Club Championships Triples: Winners: Kingsley Gum, Graham Beswick, And Brian Prescott Runners Up: Jeff Young, Ralph Allan, Ken Greenhalgh B Singles: Winner: Graham Beswick Runner Up: Ivan Lestani

Super Vet Singles: Final to be played Saturday 11 May 2013. B Pairs: A Date for the Final is yet to be allocated. Congratulations to Winners, Runners Up and to all who participated. Guinness World Record As most of you would be aware, there has been a changed forced upon us by the Guinness World Record people. Our initial approval for an Attempt on the Longest Game of Indoor Bowls playing Fours was withdrawn and we now must make an attempt on the Record by playing with three Teams of Pairs. That is, two Teams on the Green and one Team Resting. Preparations are almost complete for this new challenge. We have the Players, catering and drinks arranged, Stewards (Recorders) on board. The only thing to be resolved is the number of Adjudicators/Witnesses involved. The Requirements that Guinness have set are quite stringent and any non-observance of these requirements will render the Attempt disqualified. The Organising Committee are confident this can be achieved. The suggested Game of Triples will no longer go ahead. Undercover Green Graham Wilson the Greens Director has put a lot of work into organising repairs to the Carpet Green. Quite an extensive plumbing job needs to be undertaken before the Green itself can be repaired. Acceptance of quotes for both jobs is almost complete and hopefully work will commence in the next few weeks. Management At the last AGM the Members elected a Men’s and Ladies Council and a Board of Management to run the Club on their behalf. I KNOW that all of the current elected Officials make their decisions based on what is best for the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club and the majority of Members. We ask for your continued support. The Constitution of the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club clearly lays down a Code of Conduct. No Organisation can function effectively unless all Members adhere to the Rules and Regulations of that Organisation. I ask that all Members observe this. Ladies Presidents Report

Hello Ladies. The past couple of months have been very busy with a significant number of

bowlers representing our club in Super Challenge, Gateway District and Novice events.

Super Challenge Silver Team played their round robin at Springwood and Bronze Team at

Wellington Point. Both teams were unfortunate not to progress but gave their very best

performance. A big congratulation to all our ladies. I would like to thank Margaret James for

coming back to play after she and Eddie had moved to Bribie Island. We will miss them

both, what will we do without them. Margaret was always willing to play whenever she was

needed. Good luck to you both.

Our Club Championship Pairs Fours Winners were:- M Stemm, V Chappel, M Berg and M Clauson Runners-up -L

Ford, G Read, J Gudgeon and L Hurley. Our Championship Pairs and Singles are still being played.

Gateway Districts Singles were held at Mt Gravatt 15th/16th March with 12 rinks in play .We had several members

representing our Club and the Finals were held at Springwood Bowls Club. Congratulations to three of our ladies

Winner- Chris Baxter 2nd-Debbie Logan, 3rd Lyn Ford. They did us proud .I would like to thank Bev Geldart and

Margaret Gallagher for organising this event at our club. We could not have done it without all their hard work.

Two teams represented our club at the Springwood Shield. A good day of bowls however we were unsuccessful on

the day. In the Gateway Fours Mt Gravatt recorded a big win. The winners were Chris Baxter, Debbie Logan, Cathy

Lewis and Glenys Read. Congratulations ladies.

Novice Triples Competition was held at Cleveland. The team was Di Girvan, Helen Black and Bev Ruge. We did not

come away with the money, but we had a fun day .Cooparoo Novice Pairs was held on the 8th April. Jean Magrath

and Helen Black were 1ST round winners Ann Crocker and Bev Ruge were overall winners. It was great experience

for our novices to enter into these events.

Our Past Presidents/Life Members Day was a great day. Ena Cason our Patroness attended and we had a special

cake, balloons and a flower was given to all the Life Members and Past Presidents. Everybody enjoyed a great day of

friendship. Financial Days for March and April were very successful. A good number of teams from other clubs

attended.

Many thanks go to Gail Pratt for her willing assistance in organising these events.

Until next time, Happy Bowling. Dianne Girvan. Ladies President

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Time really flies when you are busy and with the Stage 5 redevelopment now at the

critical stage there appears to be even less time to do the little things such as writing this

column and keeping in contact with our Bowls Club members.

It has now been a few weeks since we made the changes to the staff roster at the Bowls

Club and the feed-back I am receiving is that new manager, Damon Moody, has slotted in

extremely well and is popular with the members. Young Daniel Seeto, who has been appointed to assist Damon, is

also doing well.

We wish former Bowls Club Manager Jeff McLennan well for the future and respect his decision not to accept a

position at Southside. Jeff made a significant contribution at the Bowls Club and was very popular with the members

also contributing to the running of the Bowls Club as a Men’s Section selector.

Rita Geronimos has settled in well in her new role as Duty Manager at Southside and has demonstrated renewed

enthusiasm and, like all the staff at Southside, is looking forward to the opening of the new gaming room in June.

We have now arrived at the “pointy” end of the Stage 5 redevelopment when all the work over the past few months

begins to come together. At this critical point, the gaming room has been divided into three sections – section one

has been handed over and is currently being used, section two is nearing completion with the carpet being laid on

the 13th of May followed by the installation of the gaming machines. Section three, currently being used with crews

working overnight, will be completed by the 26th of May ready for the installation of the gaming machines.

The gaming room is scheduled to be closed, yes closed and unfortunately unavoidable, on Monday 27th and Tuesday

28th of May to finalise the installation of the new loyalty system and the finishing touches to the décor including the

installation of spectacular new chandelier lighting. If things go to plan the new gaming room will be opened on

Wednesday 29th of May and our members will have access to one of the best and most spectacular gaming rooms in

Queensland. While the gaming room will be closed for two days, it will be business as usual for the club and bingo

with all other facilities operating as normal.

During this difficult construction period I have been delighted with the response and support of our loyal members,

many of whom are also members of the Bowls Club. This level of support has been critical to the ongoing financial

viability of the club and I am pleased to say that our trading levels have suffered minimal impact. On behalf of the

management committee and the staff I thank you one and all for your ongoing support.

Kim McGregor

General Manager

Sponsorship Manager’s Report

I am away on holidays for this newsletter and will be back in Brisbane after

the newsletter is complete. There are a couple of matters to report

however.

Guiness World Attempt

I am pleased to announce the Zupps Subaru; Mt Gravatt has agreed to

provide sponsorship funds towards the running of the event. Many thanks

to Zupps and Clinton Hicks, Mt Gravatt Bowls Club member and Zupps

employee for arranging this for us.

Retirement Village Bowls Day

The next day is to be held on Friday 17th May. The number of teams submitted indicates that all rinks will

be filled. Many thanks to those Villages who have nominated teams, and to our members who will assist

on the day. The sponsor of the day is “Cruiseabout” of Mt Gravatt and my thanks to the manager Annie

Venables, for this support.

As always if you are considering a purchase of goods or services, please think of our sponsors first. They

support us very well and it is up to us to return this support.

Reg Walls

Sponsorship Manager

A message from Damon our new Club Manager – Photo to be available next issue - DH

“Hello Members, Thank you for making me feel so welcome in your great club. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you over

the last 3 months as I have settled in. For those of you who don’t know much about me here is a quick bio. I’m a 36 year old father of one, I enjoyed most sports growing up but Golf became my obsession. Since I wasn’t as good as other juniors around (like Adam Scott) I wound up working in Golf Clubs. Most recently 8 years at Wynnum Golf Club first as Assistant then General Manager where I had success turning our function room into a busy and profitable section of the club.

My “mission” here at the Bowls club is twofold: I want every member to be proud of their club and enjoy using the great facilities and service we offer. I also want to grow the function, seminar and bare foot bowls trade to ensure both clubs can continue together long into the future in financially sound manner. I welcome your input and feedback especially if you’re unhappy about something and I want to hear from you if you think we could do something better. I look forward to seeing you around the club.

Happy Bowling. Damon Moody Club Manager”
