Advantages of Piezo-Resistive Sensors

The main advantage of the piezo-resistive sensor is its small size which leads to a fast response time and low cost.

Typical piezo-resistive sensor specifications include:

• Maximum temperature

• = 150ºC (300ºF) - standard sensor

• = 177ºC (350ºF) - standard sensor w/ Sleep Technology

• = 200ºC (400ºF) - SOI type sensor

• Pressure = up to 25,000 psi

• Accuracy = 0.05% full scale or better

• Resolution = 0.02 to 0.005 psi

• Drift = 3 psi to 20 psi per year (depending on the sensor type, temperature, and duration)

• Response time = Fast

• Cost = Low

Component Description

The piezo-resistive sensor has three main parts; the body, the diaphragm, and the sensing element.

• The body is the physical housing of the

sensor. With its glass feed-thru, the body is the barrier between the high-pressure environment and the tools' electronics.

• The diaphragm covers the body and protects the sensing element from the potentially harmful fluids in the sample environment. The diaphragm acts like a spring, transferring the pressure from the sample environment to the sensing element.

• The sensing element is classified into two main types:

• Standard silicon (SI) sensor - the most common sensing element

Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) - an emerging technology

A standard silicon sensing element has three main layers:

• A glass (or Pyrex) base

• A pure Silicon layer

• A semi-conducting or resistive layer (doped silicon)

A small cavity is etched into the pure silicon layer. This cavity allows the whole element to deform when external pressure is applied.

The semi-conducting layer is designed in a manner to create a Wheatstone bridge which is the measurement mechanism for the sensing element. The glass base acts as the foundation for the sensing structure.

Introduction to Piezo-Resistive Sensors (cont.)

As the external pressure increases, the drum-like sensing element flexes and stretches the semi-conducting layer, deforming the Wheatstone bridge and changing its resistance.

Hence, the resistance value of the Wheatstone bridge is proportional to the pressure applied to the sensing element.

A silicon-on-insulator type of sensing element is similar to the standard sensor except that a fourth insulating layer exists between the semi-conducting (Wheatstone bridge) layer and the pure silicon layer.

This insulating layer is usually silicon oxide (SiO2); however, sapphire has also been used with lesser results.

The advantage of the SOI type of element is its success at temperatures above 150°C (300°F). At this temperature the barrier in the standard element, between the semi-conducting layer and the silicon, begins to break down. The ions of the semi-conducting layer begin to drift into the silicon layer, permanently changing the resistance values of the Wheatstone

bridge.

However, when the semi-conducting layer is separated from the silicon by an insulating layer, this “leakage” is prevented.

It should be noted that the rate of resistance “leakage” is affected by two variables: the temperature, and the flow of electrons through the resistors. As the temperature increases the rate at which the breakdown occurs also increases.

If electrons are flowing through the resistors, the rate of degradation is more substantially increased.

The following scenarios help to put the SOI advantage into perspective:

• If a standard silicon element was only heated and

stored at 165°C, it would take approximately one

year for it to degrade beyond its specifications.

• If the sensor was at 165°C and it was also "turned

on" (electrons flowing through the resistors),

instead of lasting one year, the sensor would likely

be out of specification range after only one month.

• If the sensor was heated to 177°C, it would take

less than eight months to degrade.

• At 200°C, it is unlikely that the sensor would last

one month before being out of specification range.

The current disadvantage of the SOI type element is its performance below 150°C. The insulating silicon oxide layer is not a pure crystalline structure, and the crystalline sapphire alternative does not match up perfectly to silicon. This non-crystalline or mismatch structure creates an area for hysteresis to occur. This translates into diminished accuracy specifications in the lower temperature ranges when compared to a standard sensor.

Solution

To combat this degradation problem, Omega Well does not continuously sample or "turn on" the sensing element (we refer to this as "putting the tool in sleep mode").

Sleep mode significantly increases the life span of a standard piezo-resistive sensor at temperatures above 150°C, and it also helps to prolong battery life for the tool.

Advantages of Quartz Sensors

The three main advantages of the quartz sensor are its stability, accuracy, and temperature limit.

Characteristics

Typically, a quartz sensor has these characteristics:

Accuracy = 0.02% full scale

Resolution = 0.008 psi

Drift = Less than 3 psi per year

Response Time = Slow

Cost = Relatively high

Components

In a quartz sensor, the sensing element (shown below) is a micro-machined quartz crystal assembly.

Quartz crystal is a perfectly elastic material, yielding inherently stable and repeatable measurements. Quartz is also naturally piezo-electric. This attribute enables Canada Tech to resonate the oscillating membrane of the crystal assembly and measure the frequency of the resulting vibrations.

As the pressure increases, the assembly begins to flex around the oscillating membrane. This flexure induces tensile stresses in the membrane and changes the membrane's natural frequency of vibration.

Quartz is pure silicon that exhibits perfectly elastic behavior corresponding to low drift.

The only sources of drift come from the metallic interconnections and the bonding materials that hold the assembly together (the non-crystalline parts of the sensing assembly).

Frequency is measured with a much greater precision than any other parameter. This results in a sensor output with a high resolution.

The electronics used to measure vibration frequency are the limiting factor with regards to temperature limits.

The quartz sensor itself could withstand temperatures in excess of 400°F (200°C).

This version of the Slimline tool incorporates an O-ring and backup seal into the end of the transducer housing, allowing pressure to be ported straight to the transducer. The maximum pressure difference allowable between the outside of the housing and the ported pressure is 15,000 psi. Holes in the supplied Bullnose or Tandem adapter can be tapped to port pressure, a custom pressure porting sub can be supplied, or drawings can be provided to allow for a customer designed solution. This gauge can also be used to sense ambient pressure, like the standard Slimline tool. SHORT DRILLPIPE CARRIER

Our Frac Tool carriers are designed to be used with Casing, Drillpipe and Tubing strings. They can be custom made to a range of inside and outside diameters, and can be made from the oil industry standard steel alloys 4140 L80 and 4140 P110, as well as other materials for custom applications. As shown in the table below, we offer off-the-shelf carriers in standard overall lengths and diameters, with or without a fish neck, and with variations in the type of connector threads. In addition, we can custom build the Frac Tool carrier to customer specifications. Carriers can be specified to have internal or external sensing on one or more gauges, including gauges with extended battery barrels for increased sampling duration. See the table below for currently available carriers. Contact your Omega Well representative for additional information on these carriers, as well as custom applications.

NOTE: Internal and External sensing carriers must be used with the respective, correct bullnose. Extended carriers are only for use with extended battery barrel tools. Some collapse ratings based on maximum deflection at o-ring face seal for internal sensing applications.

The QM200S measures pressure and temperature and includes Omega Well’s replaceable 200°C memory module. With a 0.75” OD, it can be run in applications not available to the original QM200. By being smaller, the QM200S has a faster response. The QM200S improves on the QM200 design by incorporating a locking connector and dual PEEK back-ups.

BOMB WELL CARRIERS

Bomb-well carriers provide added mechanical protection to memory tools.

The combination of spring and o-ring chord absorbs energy and reduces the shocks and vibrations encountered in the working environment.

To protect against aggressive chemicals, bomb-well carriers can be filled with an inhibiting fluid. (A combination of grease and fluid can act as a buffer between the gauges and the well bore fluids.)

(Omega Well recommends the use of Dow Corning 55 grease (Part No. 100371) and regular transmission fluid.)

The Mini Logging Tool (MLT) is a

compact version of a production

logging tool. It is designed to be a

modular tool, with three main

modules being the platinum

Resistant Temperature Detector

(RTD) module, the Casing Collar

Locator (CCL) module and the

Pressure/Flow module.

The unique dual platinum RTDs

provide a fast response and high

resolution temperature profile

along the wellbore.

The electromagnetic CCL measures

depth by measuring the change in

electromagnetic field that occurs

at each casing, or tubing collar.

The Pressure/Flow module has a

universal external housing.

Different gauges are inserted into

the external housing, depending

on what pressure range the tool

will be encountering.

The MLT uses a replaceable

memory module. This memory

module is connected to the

uppermost module within the

string. Modules can be

interchanged, allowing for the

memory module to be changed out

and a second survey to be

performed with a new memory

module, while the first one is

downloaded.

Any combination of modules can

be used at one time. The only

restraint is that only one

Pressure/Flow module can be used

at once, and it must be run at the

bottom of the string.
