ABOUT THE OPPONENTSMSUM and Sioux Falls will meet for sixth time, with MSUM holding a 4-1 lead in the series. The two teams have not met since 1992-93. The Dragons and Mustangs will meet for a 95th time, with MSUM holding a 54-40 edge. The two teams met three times a year ago, including once in the NSIC tournament final (SMSU won 76-72) and in the NCAA tournament (82-66 MSUM win).

Sioux Falls CougarsThe Cougars are 7-7 overall and 3-7 in the NSIC. They are coming off of a 67-65 win over SMSU on Tuesday. In that game, Sioux Falls trailed by 15 with nine minutes left before rallying for the win. Bill Freeman and Bryan Kielpinski had 13 points each in the win.

USF is led in scoring by James Rader at 11.6 points per game. Derek Brown averages 10.6 points per game. David Maxwell leads the team at 4.2 rebounds per game, while Holland leads in assists (37). Brown has a team-best 27 steals. As a team, USF scores 65.2 points per game and allows 63.1.

Chris Johnson is in his fifth year as Cougar head coach with a record of 96-51 at the school.

Southwest Minnesota State MustangsThe Mustangs, who were picked to finish second in the NSIC in the preseason coaches poll, are 8-9 overall and 5-5 in the league. SMSU lost to Sioux Falls, 67-65 despite 15 points from Vinard Birch.

Senior Jordan Miller leads SMSU at 15.3 points per game, while junior Nick Smith is at 12.6 points per game and leads the Mustangs at 7.1 rebounds per game. Birch leads with 51 assists, while Smith has 23 blocks. Tramel Barnes leads at 31 steals. SMSU averages 72 points per game and allows 71.1 per contest; the Mustangs shoot 49 percent from the field.

Brad Bigler is in his fourth season as SMSU’s head coach with a record of 56-46..

COACHING BIO

Chad Walthall is in his third season as the head men’s basketball coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The veteran coach, known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, took over the Dragon program in May 2010, and has proven to be up to the task of bringing the MSUM program back to prominence.

Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to their first NCAA Tournament since 1965. It also marked the Dragons’ first NCAA Tournament bid since moving to NCAA Division II from NAIA. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they also earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State.

In Walthall’s first season, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon basketball program. The Dragons were selected 11th in the preseason coach’s poll for the 2010-2011 season. Walthall led the team to a sixth-place finish and earned a bid in the NSIC postseason tournament just one year after finishing 12th in league play.

Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter (2007 NABC Coach of Year) was sidelined due to health reasons.

Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third winningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.

Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. It was the first IIAC title for Loras since the 1950-51 season and its most conference wins in school history. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69.

Walthall led Loras to winning seasons in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in each of his seven seasons. In his last three years, Loras won 77 percent (37-11) of its league games, more than any other basketball program in the IIAC. In his final two seasons, Loras posted a 22-3 home record, including 11-game winning streaks in both 2005-06 and 2006-07.
