In the SpotlightChristanie Monreal and athletic training students from the Department of Athletic Training and Exercise Physiology traveled to San Marcos, Texas, for the annual Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association (SWATA) Competency Workshop on January 30–February 1, 2020. Monreal presented three sessions, which included discussions of three different techniques for muscle and fascia tissue release.

Fourteen athletic training students attended the conference and participated in mock certification exams, discussed studying techniques, and reviewed questions from the mock exam. The group was also represented at the student Quiz Bowl by seniors Ashton Peterson, Marissa Rios, and Mason Steffen. Justin Ervin served as alternate. The team placed eighth out of 12. Other students in attendance were seniors Analysia Rodriguez, Erin Bagnall, Jaclyn Carranza, and Dy’Shealan Daniels; juniors: Raegan Ledbetter, Maggie Smith, Lisa Garcia, Leslie Picasio, Dyann Johnson, and Cayla Perez.

The SWATA Competency Workshop is intended to be a complement to athletic training programs and to assist students preparing for professional credentialing examinations in athletic training (state and/or national exam formats). The workshop also provided nationally recognized speakers, active hands-on learning labs, and networking opportunities.

Rasika Bhide, graduate student, and Soon-Mi Choi, Associate Professor/Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Athletic Training & Exercise Physiology, had a manuscript published in December 2019: “A Dance-Based Exercise Training Will Be Better Remedy for Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease? Research in Dance and Physical Education,” Vol. 3, No. 2, pp.63-69.

Rodney Fisher, Assistant Professor of The Shimadzu School of Radiologic Sciences, presented “Scoping out your practice or how to avoid a date with the judge” and “Putting the applied into radiographic physics and radiobiology,” and Jessyca Wagner, Assistant Professor of The Shimadzu School of Radiologic Sciences, co-presented “A master of image evaluation” at the Association of College Educators in Radiologic Technology’s (ACERT) 45th Annual Meeting. Robert Comello, Associate Professor of The Shimadzu School of Radiologic Sciences, and Wagner were masters of ceremony for the Student Challenge, and Lynette Watts, Associate Professor of The Shimadzu School of Radiologic Sciences, facilitated the 3MT Student Presentation

The following students placed in two competitions: Sedonna Swanner won second place for her paper “Radiation Hormesis and its Future,” Catherine (Katie) Flood won second place for her 3MT presentation “Autism Education in Radiology,” and Zoe Nolan won third place for her 3MT presentation “PET-MRI Uses in Oncology.”
