International MSME Day : 27th June, 2021 MSME sector is the growth
driver of economy not only for India but for the whole world
as
well. Besides reducing the scale of poverty, these enterprises are
major contributors to employment generation and GDP. For instance,
Domestic MSMEs make 30% of India’s GDP. This figure is much higher
for the world where MSMEs’ contribution is 50% of global GDP and
70% of total employment. Obviously, India has great scope to expand
its MSME sector. And therefore, the Government of India places
great emphasis on promotion of the sector with a spate of
affirmative action, entrepreneur-friendly policies, and financial
support.
In addition to contributing in self-employment and
entrepreneurship, MSMEs tend to create significant number of
employment for the people of deprived section of society.
Generally, workforce in MSMEs consists of women and youth from
rural and poor backgrounds. This is to say that MSMEs are extremely
crucial to bring prosperity through equitable distribution of
income at the bottom of the social pyramid.
The ongoing pandemic has led to a widespread economic stress.
Prolonged lockdowns, essential to contain the spread of virus, have
affected supply chain adversely. Demands have suffered as well. In
this scenario, micro, small and medium scale enterprises (MSMEs),
especially the ones run by young entrepreneurs, SC & ST
entrepreneurs and women entrepreneurs have faced challenges on
various fronts.
Besides being vital to employment and economy, MSMEs are, by and
large, socially responsible, and responsive. Being lithe and lean,
they quickly adapt to the changing needs of the nation. This
capability was amply demonstrated during the outburst of Covid.
MSMEs came to the forefront in large numbers in producing masks,
PPE kits, sanitizer, and many such things whose demand had suddenly
spurted. Agility of MSMEs eventually helped reduce India’s
dependence considerably on the import of these items, contributing
to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Government of India through Ministry of MSME has rolled out a
series of initiatives to ensure that MSMEs could endure the ongoing
economic crises due to the pandemic. This includes interest
subsidy, handholding at every step, the policy of 4% mandatory
Public Procurement, special concessions to enterprises run by women
and SC/ST category entrepreneurs, to name a few measures.
Acknowledging the unparalleled role of MSMEs for the entire world,
the United Nations has declared 27th June as International MSME
Day. The objective is to raise public awareness towards
contribution of MSMEs in sustainable development of global economy.
Commemorating the International MSME Day, India salutes its
frontline warriors of economy – the MSME entrepreneurs – and
reiterates its commitment to take the sector to new
heights.
