Preparation (cleaning, disinfecting and sterilization) of diamond knives from Amidia Ltd.

General basic principlesThediamondknivesmustbecleaned,disinfectedandsterilizedbeforehandeverytimetheyareused;thisparticularlyappliesalsotofirstuseafterdeliverysincethediamondknivesaredeliveredunsterilized(cleaninganddisinfectingafterremovalofthetrans-portprotectivepackaging;sterilizationafterpacking).Effectivecleaninganddisinfectingisanessentialprerequisiteforeffectivesterilization.Please always observe as part of your responsibility for the sterility of the diamond knives for the application that only adequate deviceandproduct-specificvalidatedprocessesforthecleaning/disinfectingandsterilizationshouldbeused,thatthedevicesused (disinfector, steriliser) are serviced and checked regularly, and the validated parameters for each cycle are observed.Please also observe the valid legal provisions in your country as well as the hygiene regulations of the medical practice or hospital. This particularly applies for the different regulations concerning effective prion deactivation.Cutters and tips are very sensitive to mechanical touching which is why one should absolutely avoid any situation during manipu-lation, particularly during cleaning and during safe storage, in which the diamond knives touch each other or come into contact with other hard materials. The traditionally used sieve or the bowl for random mounting are not at all suitable as eye instruments. The ideal container must be made out of a metal-tolerant material and be subdivided in such a way that it does not touch the diamond knives and that it does impact the sensitive blades and tips.

Cleaning and disinfectingBasicsAn automated process (a disinfector) should be used wherever possible for cleaning and disinfecting. A manual process should only be used if an automated process is unavailable because of its significantly lower effectiveness and reproducibility1.1 Use of a manual cleaning and disinfecting process must be secured by means of an additional product and process-specific

validation, which is the responsibility of the user.

Perform pre-treatment in both cases.

Pre-treatment

Rough dirt and fouling must be removed from the diamond knives immediately after use (within a maximum of 2 hours).

Useflowingwatertodothisoracleaningagentsolution;thecleaningagentshouldbecompatiblewiththediamondknives(seechapter “Resistance of the material to various substances“; we recommend our cleaner “Rapid Cleaner“ type No. 9000, 9001 and 9002). Clean the diamond knives and the blades using a soft, lint-free, damp cloth or by using the Amidia cleaning sticks Type No. 9014. Clean diamond blades with the cloth or cleaning sticks in the direction of cutting against the tip. In cases of strong fouling, we recommend hanging the diamond knives on the Amidia instrument stands type 9010, 9011, 9012 or 9013 and dipping the kni-ves in Amidia Rapid Cleaner so as just to cover the fouling, to soften the dirt. The diamond knives should not be totally immersed since particles of dirt could get into the mechanism and negatively effect their function.You can also perform an additional disinfection to protect personnel; the disinfecting agent should be aldehyde-free(otherwise there will be fixing of blood spots), should have a checked effectiveness (e.g. a DG HM or FDA approval or CE mar-king), be suitable for disinfecting the diamond knives and be compatible with the diamond knives (see chapter “Resistance of the material to various substances“). Please note that this disinfection – after cleaning – can not replace the disinfection step to be performed.

Automatic cleaning/disinfecting (disinfector/RDG)The following should be observed when selecting the disinfector,– that the disinfector always has a checked effectiveness (e.g. DG HM or FDA approval or a CE marking according to

DIN EN ISO 15883),– that wherever possible a checked programme for thermal disinfection (min. of 10 minutes at 93°C or an A0 value > 3000) is

used (for chemical disinfection a risk of disinfectant residues on the diamond knives),– thattheprogrammeusedforthediamondknivesissuitableandcontainsanadequatenumberofflushingcycles,– that only sterile or low germ content (a max. of 10 germs/ml) as well as a low endotoxine (max. of 0.25 endotoxine units/ml) of

water (e.g. purified water/highly purified water) is used for rinsing,– that the air used for drying is filtered and– that the disinfector is regularly serviced.

The following should be observed when selecting the cleaning agent system,– that this is fundamentally suitable for cleaning of instruments made out of metals and plastics,– that – in as far as no thermal disinfection is used – that an additional suitable disinfectant with a checked effectiveness

(e.g. a DG HM or FDA approval or a CE marking) is used and that this is compatible with the cleaning agent used and– that the chemicals used with the diamond knives are compatible (see chapter “Resistance of the material to various substan-

ces“).

The concentrations specified by the manufacturer of the cleaning agent and disinfectant, if needed, must be observed.

Procedure: 1. Lay the diamond knives in the disinfector. Ensure that the diamond knives do not touch each other. 2. Start the programme. 3. Remove the diamond knives after the disinfector programme has ended. 4. Check and pack away the diamond knives as soon as possible after removal (see chapter “Checking“, “Servicing“

and “Packing“, and also allow further drying if necessary at a clean location).

CheckingCheck the diamond knives after cleaning or cleaning/disinfecting for corrosion, damaged surfaces, splitting-off and fouling and separate out a damaged diamond knife (limit the number of times it is reused, see chapter “Reusability“). Diamond knives which are still dirty must again be cleaned and disinfected.

Never clean the diamond knives by using metal brushes or steel wool.

The diamond knives may only be subjected to temperatures below 141°C (286°F)!

ReusabilityThe diamond knives can always be reused if they are handled with sufficient care and are undamaged and clean. Diamond knives with a defective or broken off blade must be reground or replaced.All liability is excluded in cases of violation of these instructions.

Most of our diamond blades can be resharpened several times if they are not too badly damaged.

For each repair, the handle is totally dismantled, and all of the mechanical parts are cleaned, checked and replaced if necessary. Micrometer and step knives are recalibrated.

After grinding, the diamond blade is checked to the same standard as new knives.

We accept other knives for repair except the micrometer knives. However, we can not accept responsabi lity for the break-age of blades other than Amidia.

We always do our best in order to return your repairs as soon as possible. However, the lead time may be variable due to the many different kind of blade types we receive for resharpening.
