(Papa Francisco, Jubileo Para Sacerdotes, Junio 2, 2016)

The Shepherd of Mercy

“I like to use ‘mercy’ as a verb: We have to ‘show mercy’ in order to ‘receive mercy’. We cannot meditate on mercy without it turning into action. We have to speak of what most moves us, to speak of all those faces that make us want to do something to satisfy the hunger and thirst for God, for justice, for tenderness. We can concentrate on mercy because it is what is most essential and definitive.”

(Pope Francis, Jubilee for Priests, June 2, 2016) Msgr. Mark, for the past 31 years you have been an example and an inspiration to all of us of what it means for mercy to be a verb; that love of God put into action each and every day. You have sat by our bedsides through our darkest nights. You have come to visit us when we were sick and alone. You have calmed us when we trembled with fear. You have given us hope when all we knew was despair. You have loved us when we thought ourselves unlovable. You have shared the Good News of Jesus Christ with us when all we heard was bad news. And you have fed us with the Bread of Angels, the Body of Christ. Please know that as you now move on to the next chapter of your life, you will always be a part of our Cathedral Family and have a place in our hearts. The finest gift we can give to one who loved so much is remembrance! God bless you Fr. Mark! We love you! Msgr. Geno Sylva On behalf of the Staff and the Parishioners of St. John’s Cathedral
