Mission Statement - We welcome all and exclude none, as we are inspired
by the wisdom of our patron, St. John Vianney, the Curé of
Ars, who said: "This is our glorious duty, to pray and to
love." Therefore, we are committed to continue the mission
of Jesus Christ, to proclaim the Gospel & love one another as
He loves us.
Values Statement - Empowered with the strength given to us
by the Sacraments, we practice generosity in faith, hope and love.
Vision Statement - As we move forward, prioritized by our parishioners’
input, we will focus on liturgy and worship, faith formation, family,
communication, and service.
PLEASE NOTE: The 5:30 pm Sunday Mass has been

Pastor’s Weekly Letter – March 5, 2017
~ First Sunday of Lent
Fr. Frank
Dear Parishioners,
MONDAYS WITH CURÉ: One of my favorite books is “Tuesdays with Morrie,” by Mitch Albom. It’s about a dying
man who meets every day with a young man he taught in college. Morrie understands that life’s complexities can be
broken down into simple truths. He handles this stage of his life with a combination of bravery, compassion and just a
little crankiness. It’s a book that “true to life” for all of us at various stages. Setting aside a particular day of the week
to reflect with others is important. That’s why I’d like to suggest a Lenten theme for Curé of Ars – namely, “Mondays
with Curé.” I hope you will reserve the Mondays of Lent.
WELCOME: This Monday evening we welcome Msgr. James McNamara, the Regional Episcopal Vicar as our
presider and preacher! I have known Monsignor since I was in the seminary in the mid-1970’s when he was Spiritual
Director at Huntington. He will offer his Lenten reflection at the homily time of the Mass. The Novena will be prayed
before the Mass. Please bring a friend, or two, or three?
CMA: Thank you to Mrs. Laurie Whitfield and the folks from The Catholic Ministries Appeal for being here last
weekend. I hope you enjoyed the video presentation and Bishop Barres’ invitation. It was a ‘God-incidence’ that the
weekend coincided with the Academy Awards. Although there was a mix-up for the “Best Picture” award out in
Hollywood, there’s no ‘mistake’ that this video offers the “best picture” of the local church of Rockville Centre! Any
support you can give to the CMA will help the 600,000 folks of Nassau and Suffolk who are served through the
Bishop’s Appeal!
REVISED MASS SCHEDULE: The last Mass on Sundays here at Curé as of TODAY is at 1 PM. Please get the
word out among fellow parishioners and neighboring parishes. Sunday Evening Masses are also available at:
6 PM – St. Thomas the Apostle, 24 Westminster Road, West Hempstead, NY 11552
6:30 PM – St. Ladislaus, 18 Richardson Place, Hempstead, NY 11550 (Corner of Front & Peninsula)
7 PM – Corpus Christi, 155 Garfield Avenue, Mineola, NY 11501 (front is on Willis Avenue)
TOWN HALL: Thank you to the many parishioners who recently participated in the various “Town Hall Meetings.”
Some very good ideas came about as a result of your presence, your love for the parish, and your suggestions.
Following up on the ones detailed in last week’s bulletin, here are some other topics:
CONFESSIONS: I have asked all the priests to be on hand for all the Masses for pastoral conversations and
Confessions. A few folks suggested Confessions immediately after Mass to reduce wait time and increase
anonymity. So, for now as of today, on the first and third Sundays, Father Zach will continue to greet folks by the
sacristy door, I will be in the vestibule, and Father Henry will go directly to the St. John Vianney Chapel for
Confessions after the Masses. Pastoral enhancements such as this can be easily accommodated. Confessions are
also by appointment, and on Saturdays (with Adoration) now – from 4 PM to 5 PM.
FINANCES: Many folks expressed concern about the financial status of our parish following up on the (now
completed) exterior renovation of the church and restoration of the windows. It’s certainly a concern that often
calls for Ambien! This month the Diocesan Director of Administration will be meeting with our business manager
to offer specific direction regarding how we need to come up with a plan to pay off the principle (as well as the
monthly interest charges). It is my hope that as a result of following those directions and making hard, necessary
commensurate decisions, we will continue to flourish as a parish family. Trustee Janet Bruder volunteered to
analyze departmental budgets as a first step in this process.
INPUT: A few folks suggested resurrecting advisory bodies for the various ministries of the parish. The Strategic
Planning Committee will further explore the possibilities of broadening pastoral input.
LITURGICAL: Others recommended changes related to liturgical ministers and questioned various procedures
such as the Communion line beginning from the back of the church. Trustee Paul Sadej and the Liturgy Committee
will eventually be looking into these things and lots more. … Thank you! Happy Lent!

Curé of Ars -4-
Our pastor, Msgr. Francis J. Caldwell, his brother priests, Fr. Henry Leuthardt, Fr. Zachary Callahan, and our Pastoral Team welcome you to Curé of Ars. If you are visiting us for the first time, you are our honored guests and we pray that you will consider making Curé of Ars your church home. We are here to assist you in your spiritual growth and maturity as together we give glory to God through our worship, prayer and service in the name of Jesus Christ. We are committed to the fullness of Roman Catholic teaching and to the promise of salvation that the Church offers to all believers. May God accomplish a great work in you among us.
Welcome! Stewardship
It is everything we do after we say we believe.
Tithing: God’s Plan for Giving
Stewardship - A Way of Life
Tithing Income: February 26, 2017 $13,186.00
February 28, 2016 $12,525.00
Kids for Kids February 26, 2017 $ 93.00
Pastor’s Comments - For gifts of hope, dear Lord, we
give thanks. Enable us to see, in the places we live and
work and go to school, the desperate and obvious needs of
some, and the silent, hardly noticeable needs of others.
Then, strengthen our hearts to respond to what we see.
Comments on Tithing from the pews - “We have been
tithing to Curé of Ars for some time now, not because we
have to or out of reasons of guilt. Rather, we do it in
thankfulness to God for His incredible generosity and
blessings to us.” - A Parishioner
Bulletin Reflection: What temptations lure us from the
path of discipleship? Possessions? Pride? Power? Oh
Lord, create for us a clean heart and renew a steadfast
spirit within us.
Living Stewardship: We are grateful this week for all
stewards in our parish who embrace their discipleship,
using the ashes as a reminder to share their own gifts at
home, work, school, our parish and in the wider
community.

Thank you for your generous support of the
2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal.
Stewardship reminds us to count our blessings,
acknowledge God’s gifts and express thanks to Him.
Last week, we had the opportunity view the 2017 Catholic
Ministries Appeal video. I hope it gave you a great sense
of the many programs that our church conducts throughout
our Long Island Community. We sincerely thank the
households who, as good stewards, have already made a
gift to the 2017 Catholic Ministries Appeal.
If you have not yet had the opportunity to join in
making a difference in the lives of those around us,
please consider making a gift to this year’s Catholic
Ministries Appeal.
Because of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, every year we
are able to bring the Light of the Lord by serving more
than 600,000 people in our Long Island Community. This
support enables our children to continue to receive the gift
of spiritual formation, sacramental preparation, and
quality education. It allows seminarians and lay leaders to
fulfill their calling to serve the community. With your
support Catholic Charities can maintain its services for the
poor and disadvantaged, and we can continue to reach out
to our young people and others to find the best ways to
guide and pass on our faith from generation to generation.
You may pick up information in the back of the church, or
for more info visit www.CatholicMinistriesAppeal.org or
call 516-678-5800- ext. 296.
EVERY GIFT MATTERS AND MAKES
A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS!
Thank You!
Bereavement Ministry
Curé of Ars “Journey of Hearts” Bereavement Team will
hold a 7-week session on Wednesday evenings from
7:30pm - 9:00pm in the Rectory Lower Level on April
19, 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31. In order to attend, you
must register by calling the Rectory, 623-1400, Ext. 175
and a Team member will return your call. We urge you to
register early, as seating is limited and we cannot accept
any walk-ins. Grief is the process of healing from the pain
of loss. If you find yourself on a journey through the
wasteland of grief, let us share our resources to get you to
the other side, for with God all things are possible. Sharing
your thoughts, feelings, and experiences will help you get
beyond the pain caused by the death of someone you love.
The support of your faith community is so needed at this
time. We will help you survive those rough changes in
your life and help you to understand that the emotions you
are feeling may be shared by others as well. You need not
walk alone. God is with us.

Jesus says; “My Daughter, I want to
instruct you on how you are to rescue
souls through sacrifice and prayer. You
will save more souls through prayer and
suffering than will a missionary through
his teachings and sermons alone.”
- St Faustina’s Diary
We invite you to join us fellow sinners for some honest and
thought provoking conversation. We meet twice a month
for fellowship and spiritual renewal where we learn to ask
for God’s grace to heal our brokenness and be a man of
virtue.
On Monday March 6, Signposts will be on Lesson #9
The Eucharist. Jesus said “ Whoever eats my flesh and
drinks my blood remains in me and I in him” (John 6:56).
“The Eucharist is a fire that inflames us, that, like lions
breathing fire, we may retire from the altar being made
terrible to the devil.” --St John Chrysostom
Come as we learn from each other how to best prepare our
hearts to receive Holy Communion.
* Date change: Monday, March 20 meeting will be on
Wednesday, March 22 *
The meetings are held in the Rectory lower level at
7:30pm.

Have you ever considered lighting a candle for your loved
ones? This candle remains lit for your
special Perpetual Intention that the candle
represents, every day for one year. The priests and
parishioners will also pray for your
intention during our Sunday and weekday Masses
here at Curé of Ars. The candle can also be pur-
chased for any prayer intention: conversions,
memorials, in thanksgiving, for special intentions or
occasions. See the forms in the rack hanging on the wall by
the Perpetual Intention candles in the church lobby.

TODAY, March 5, 2017, a collection will be taken for
“The Church in Need.” The monies collected at this time
will be shared among three areas of the world where there
is particular need for help:
Church in Central and Eastern Europe - the
Collection provides support for basic pastoral programs
and makes scholarships available for students studying
to serve their local church. These students become vital
participants in the renewal of the Church in the region.
The Church in Latin America faces many difficult
challenges. Natural disasters in many areas caused
lasting damage to the Church, while a significant loss
of parishioners to migration and to other faiths, the
inability to support itself financially, and a lack of
priests and religious to help effectively minister to the
large number of Catholics continue to trouble the
region.
The Church in Africa – the funds will go to assisting
African countries where poverty, sickness and political
strife prevent people from living in dignity.
Thank you for your generosity.

Robert & Mary
O'Brien
Mary and Bob have been
parishioners since 1979.
They have 2 children and 3
grandchildren. Bob retired
from the Town of Hemp-
stead Highway Dept. in
2008. Mary taught for 37
years in the Diocese of
Rockville Centre elementary
schools: Holy Name of
Mary in Valley Stream 1970
-75, St. Mary's in Roslyn
1975-90, and Our Lady of
Mercy in Hicksville 1990-2007. During the 1990's
Mary became a Eucharistic Minister. She joined the
Garden Club and began to help decorate the Church
for Christmas and Easter.
About 3 years ago, Fr. Charles asked Mary if she
would take charge of the Altar Society. She changes
the altar cloths and the flowers for the Church's
liturgical seasons. She orders the poinsettias, lilies,
hay bales, and mums. She also organizes a very dedi-
cated group of ladies and a gentleman who wash and
iron the linens used at Mass. They also change the ho-
ly water, dust the church and help decorate throughout
the year.
In their spare time, they can be seen marching in
parades and appearing in shows with Tara Pipes and
Drums. Bob plays the bass drum and Mary plays a
snare drum. She is the Band Secretary. She is also a
past President of the Ladies Ancient Order of
Hibernians and a past Regent of the Catholic
Daughters of America.
If anyone is interested in joining the Altar Society or
in taking beginning bagpipe or drum lessons, please
contact Mary at [email protected]. (You do not have to
be Irish to join the Band. Beginning lessons are given
every Thursday night at 7pm in Massapequa.)

Lent With Pope Benedict XVI
"The Christian's life is a life of Faith, founded
on the Word of God and nourished by it.
In the trials of life and in every temptation
the secret of victory
lies in listening to the word of truth
and rejecting with determination falsehood and evil.”
This is the true and central program of the Lenten
season: to listen to the word of truth; to live, speak and do
what is true; to refuse falsehood that poisons humanity
and is the vehicle of all evils. It is therefore urgently
necessary in these 40 days to listen anew to the gospel, the
word of the Lord, the word of truth, so that in every
Christian, in every one of us, the understanding of the
truth given to him, given to us, may be strengthened, so
that we may live and witness to it."

St. Monica’s Parent Intercessory Group
This is a Parent Intercessory Group that prays for their
children under the patronage of St. Monica who
prayed for her son, St. Augustine, for 30 years.
Augustine was lost in a life of self-indulgence
and sin. Her prayers brought him to God and
the Church and helped to lead him to a life of
holiness, priesthood and sainthood. She is a
powerful intercessor for us in heaven.
This group is for all parents, dads, moms, grandparents, etc.
Their focus is praying for children. They meet the 2nd and
4th Thursdays of each month at 7:30pm in the Rectory
Lower Level. (Please use the side entrance.)

“GIVE ME BACK THE JOY OF YOUR SALVATION,
AND A WILLING SPIRIT SUSTAIN IN ME”
(Psalm 51:14).
As this Lenten season begins and spring is upon us, I’m
reflecting on ants. Each morning, signs of their industrious
work appear as little anthills on the walkway near my
home. As the day progresses and foot traffic increases, the
anthills are often trampled on, sometimes completely
washed away by heavy rain. Yet no matter what happens
to their work, the ants offer signs each morning that
they’ve not given up, that they’re renewing the efforts of
the previous day.
We so often begin the season of Lent with intentions to
enter into practices of penance, with promises to pray more
deeply and more often, with high hopes for renewal. As
the days move on, we may become aware of our failings to
hold ourselves to our commitments. Yet what God calls us
to is not perfection, but faithfulness, to trying our best to
listen to God’s voice in our everyday lives and to getting
up each morning with a renewed heart.
