The M.S. in Construction Management offers those with bachelor’s

degrees in construction management, architecture, engineering or

business the knowledge and skills to plan and oversee each phase of

the commercial or residential construction process.

Currently, the demand for trained construction managers exceeds the

supply. With the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting a seven to

17 percent increase in the number of construction managers needed

through 2014, there is a substantial need for professionals educated

in construction materials and methods.

The M.S. in Construction Management will prepare you for

management positions in a variety of construction projects and

construction companies by enhancing professionalism, expertise and

responsibility through an emphasis on green building methods with

a comprehensive, innovative and multidisciplinary education that is

intimately linked to the needs of the construction field.

The M.S. in Construction Management is a 31-credit graduate

degree program that can be pursued in both day and evening

course offerings and on either a full- or part-time basis.

Areas of study will include project planning; scheduling and

risk management; advanced construction techniques and

representation methods; legal and contractual issues; project

economics; and health and safety. Moreover, a key component

of the program will be the integration of techniques, materials

and methods of sustainable building into the construction process.

Future construction managers will be trained in the principles

of sustainability and Leadership in Energy and Ecological

Design (LEED) standards. New regulations set by the United

States Green Building Council, in addition to the ways the

built environment diminishes limited resources and impacts

ecological balance, demand a curriculum sensitive to the

ethical dimension of the business of construction.

This degree program provides a balance among various skill

sets with emphasis upon practical application that ensures you

have the necessary knowledge base to be successful in working

in both a hardhat and an office setting.

Offered in the School of Architecture, the program provides

increased understanding and expertise in the transition from

the design stages to the construction process.

Since 1884, Philadelphia University has offered professional

education in a variety of fields. Founded to raise the art and

technology of the American textile industry to international

standards of quality, the University has maintained its

commitment to academic excellence while greatly expanding

its undergraduate and graduate programs.

Seventeen years ago, the University introduced a 5-year

Bachelor of Architecture program. From the beginning, coursework

focused upon building construction methods and materials.

Integral to this undergraduate degree was a sequence of four

courses that formed a Construction Management concentration

that was formalized in 2007. During this time, the University

also introduced the M.S. in Sustainable Design degree. Today,

these two intersecting fields of structure and sustainability provide

a strong foundation for the M.S. in Construction Management.

Issues of sustainable building practice are fast

becoming a mainstay of the construction industry. The

M.S. in Construction Management is in close proximity

to Philadelphia University’s Engineering and Design

Institute whose research focus in sustainable materials

affords you the opportunity to see and experience the

latest technologies and innovations in green building.

The M.S. in Construction Management draws upon

faculty expertise and specialized, graduate courses at

Philadelphia University in the School of Business, School

of Engineering and Textiles and the M.S. in Sustainable

Design Program. Also, local professionals from the

construction industry offer their expertise, serving as

advisors to students in the capstone Master's project.
