MSc Human Computer Interaction Design
Pre-course reading
Here's a reading list which you may find useful over the summer. We are not expecting you to have read all of these texts in advance, neither do we expect you to purchase them all as this would be very expensive. Although you can’t access City’s library at the university until you start the course in September, second hand copies of many of these are available on Amazon and many have previews available on Google Books.
Good old favourites that capture the ethos of user-centred design:
Krug, S. (2005). Don't make me think: A common sense approach to web usability. Pearson Education India.
Krug, S. (2011). Rocket surgery made easy. Uitgeverij Thema. Sample chapter at http://sensible.com/downloads-rsme.html.
Norman, D. (2009). The design of future things. Basic books. Norman, D. A. (2013). The design of everyday things: Revised and expanded edition.
Basic books.
Core textbooks for the course are:
Oates (2005) Researching Information Systems and Computing. Sage Publishing Preece, J, Sharp, H and Rogers, Y. (2015) Interaction Design: Beyond Human-
Computer Interaction (4th edition), John Wiley
Suggested reading (if you have time):

and Interaction Design (3rd edition), Pearson. Carroll, J M (Ed) (2003) HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks. Towards A
Multidisplinary Science, Morgan Kaufmann Cooper et al. (2007) About Face 3: The Essentials of Interaction Design, Wiley. Dumas, J S, and Redish, J C (1999) A Practical Guide to Usability Testing, Intellect

Online resources
There are a few online resources you might like to keep an eye on, if you aren't already.
First of all, there's our Centre for HCI Design's Twitter feed @cityuni_hcid . While it's not an official route for communicating with you, there's still plenty of interesting things that get posted. In addition, you may want to follow City University London @CityUniLondon or the City Interaction Lab @cinteractionlab
More generally I have found these worthwhile:
Nielsen Norman Group’s Alertbox http://www.nngroup.com/articles/subscribe/ UX Matters http://www.uxmatters.com/ UX Magazine https://uxmag.com/ First Monday journal http://firstmonday.org/index UXPA UK mailing list http://uxpa-uk.org/about/feedback-and-suggestions/sign-up/ ACM SIGCHI mailing lists http://www.sigchi.org/connect/mailing-lists BCS HCI mailing list https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=bcs-hci
If you have any other personal favourite HCI/UX books or online resources, please let us know and we’ll add them to the list (contact [email protected]).
